Dedication. By divine permission, the
new Methodist Episcopal Church, in Carroll
township, near Carson Lackey's, will be
dedicated to the worship of Almighty God,
on Sabbath, tho 4th of December. Rev.

Cattle Killed. A few days since Jacob
Stambaugh of Tyrone twp., lost two of his
cattle from turning them into tho corn
stubble. It is supposed that eating too
many of the dry husks produced death, as
nothing was the matter with them previous
to be turned into tho field.
Dr Shoeppo's case has again been brought
before the Governor. This time the appli
cation is for a pardon which is signed by
the physician to tho jail, the sheriff of
Cumberland Co., and many citizens of
Carlisle, on the ground that the Dr. is
' rapidly failing having, had several hemor
rhages from the lungs.
Fatal Accident. Jahles Fagan tho newly
elected Councilman from the First "Ward,
was instantly killed this morning while
walking on tho railroad track at tho upper
end of tho yard. Mr. Fagan, in company
with another gentleman, was going up the
track, when an engine coming unexpected
ly, Mr. Fagan thinking his companion in
danger, in endeavoring to save him, lost
his foothold, and was literally cut to pieces
by the advancing engine. Mr. Fagan was
a man much respected by all who knew
him, and his loss will be deeply deplored.
Altoona Sun.
Singular Explosion. On Tuesday last a
vulcanizer, used by Dr. II. C. nowor den
tist, of this place, in the manufacture of
artificial teeth, having, been allowed to re
main too long on the stove, suddenly explo
ded with terrific violence, making an utter
wreck of the stove, pipe, &c, besides
smashing most of the window glass of the
room. Tho vulcanizer being of iron and
very solidly put together, offered great re
sistance to the gazes which caused the ex
plosion, and produced a report like that of
a small cannon. The top of the vulcanizer
imbedded itself in the ceiling above.

room at the time or loss of life might havo
ensued, For some time there was danger
of a serious fire, but by prompt efforts tho
Ilames were extinguished. The stove is
not worth as much as it was. There were
two sets of teeth in the vulcanizer at the
time, but the doctor sayg he does not caro
much about them, in fact he has not time
to look for them, as they might be in tho

Another Man "Sold. A Blair Co., paper
says: " Another victim to the counterfeit
money swindle, has been found in this
county. One of thoso packages prico,
$31.50 per box made its appearance at the
Express office. It was addressed to a resi
dent of the enterprising town of Williams
burg. When lie made his appearance he
was asked if he knew what the box con
tained. Said emphatically that he just did.
" Hadn't he bettor open it in the office ?"
"Not much ;" and off he went with his
precious box. Ho hasn't been heard from
since ; but as he isn't a member of the
church it is fair to presume that he prayed
for a short time after the fashion of Horace
Greeley ?"

curred on the N. C. R. It., opposite this
place, on Friday last. Tho particulars of
which, we did not learn, further than that
fifteen cars were broken up.
The consumers of butter, are on a
" strike" against the producers : a few
weeks ago, when it was 3octs, por pound.
It could not be had, but at the present
price, (40cts.,) tho stores are over stocked,
and hucksters, travel from door to door,with
wagon loads, and aro snecringly offered
lOcts. per pound.
On "Wednesday last, a spark from a loco
motive, sat firo to a stack of corn fodder
standing near Mr. O. W. Ellis's barn, and
consumed it, and it was only by great ex
ertion that tho barn was saved.
Mr. John Richards, resigned the leader
ship of the Duncaunon Eand, on Monday'
evening last, in consequence of removal to
Philadelphia and received at his residence
a farewell serenade, as a mark of apprecia
tion, of "its members. Tho Band is now
led by Mr. John Harper, Jr.
Must Settle. Mr. Geo. II. Martin of
Blain gives notice to all who have accounts
on his books, that such accounts must bo
sfettled either by note, or otherwise before
'January 1st. If not settled by that date
they vill bo placed in tho hands of an
officef-'for collection. 3t

A man named Frank Kerlin was killed
just below Harrisburg on the 19th inst.,'

that surgical aid was required to dress the
wound.
Honry Frybargcr, of McVeytown, fell
into the canal at that place, on the 10th
inst., while intoxicated, and was drowned.
On Wednesday last the mill proporty at
Newport, formerly belonging to Peifer &
Manning, was sold to Amos Ovorholser, of
Lancaster county, for $12,000.
Dr. John Bechtol is now being triod at
Harrisburg, on tho charge of performing
an abortiou,"and causing the death of Lillie
Mason, at that city, in August last.
The Newport band aro paid quite a com
pliment by the Juniata county papers, for
tho music furnished by them, at the recent
dedication of tho soldier's monument at
Mitilintown.
Thanksgiving day passod very quietly in
this place, the business places being closed.
A union servico was also hold in the Lu
theran church.
A protracted meeting is now being held
at the church in Little Germany. It will
continue until Deo. 4th.
The church was dedicated on last Sun
day. The total cost of tho building was

hCsamuel Gantt, who was a resident of
p'Newport was accidentally killed on Satur
day week, by lulling botweon the cars at
tho yard in Harrisburg. His remains were
brought to Newport for burial. Tho do
ceased was a son of Hannaniah Gantt, of
Oliver township. .

A Union Observatory.
Mr. Editor Sir, if you please, through
tho Times, I desire to consult the citizens
of Perry, Cumberland, and Dauphin coun
ties upon the propriety of erecting a Union
Observatory on top of the Blue Mountain,
which is the line between Pci ry and Cum
berland county. I have no doubt but what
an observatory somewhere along tho top of
tho Blue Mountain would bo both interest
ing and useful to our citizens. It would at
once afford a most magnificent view of near
ly all the towns, farms, and dwelling hous
es in Cumberland county, and a great many
in Dauphin and Perry. It would also give
astronomers a good chance to observe any
strange phenomenon in the heavens, and if
there was one on each high mountain across
tho county they might be used as signals to
foretell the coming of rains and dangerous
storms. I believe the time is coming when
such a thing will bo done. An observatory
would not cost much, if built similar to
those used in the South during the war,and
known as " Look-Outs." I hopo some en
terprising persons will take the subject into
consideration, and report their opinion of it
