A Cheap Ice House.
A correspondent of the Hearth and
Home ufives the following plan fur build
ing a cheap and good ice house.
" A collar is dug G feet deep, and in
it arc set on end edge to ed.e, halves of
logs G to 10 inches in diameter, and S
feet long. Two frames GJ feet square
serve to keep the uprights from Jailing
in, and the dirt upon the outside holds
thcui in place. The tops are then sawed
oil' evenly and level, and an inch-board
nailed on, upon which the roof-boards
are fitted, mitred and nailed at the top
and battened. The end is simply inch
boards set edge to edge. A door two
feet wide is hung in one end; an em
bankment is made all around of the earth
thrown out of the cellar, and the thing is
done; save in cases where the bottom is
not sandy, a drain will be necessary.
It is best also to make a floor of old rails
or round poles laid close together. Pack
the ice in as solid a mass as possible,
leaving a space of -I to fi inches all
around, to be closely filled with sawdust.
Before the warm days co:nc, putG or S
inches in depth of sawdust on top."
Some years ago we knew of an ice
house built on exactly the same plan, only
it was 8 x 10 feet, which was always well
supplied with ice even wlieu others of
greater pretentions were out. This was
built on a hill side and had a good drain
age which is very important. Ed.
Eating Without Appelile.
It is wrong to eat without appetite;
for it shows there is no gastric juice in
the stomach, and that nature does not
need food, and not needing- it, there beiug
no fluid to receive and act upon it, there
being no fluid to receive and act upon
it, would remain there only to putrefy
the very thought of which should be
sufficient to deter any man from eating the
remainder of his lifo. If a " tonic" is ta
ken to whet the appetite, it is a mistaken
course; for its only result is to cause one
to eat more, when already an amount has
been eaten beyond what the gastric juice
supplied is ablo to prepare.
The object to be obtained is a larger
supply of gastric juice, not a larger sup
ply of food, and whatever fails to ac
complish that essential object, fails to
have any efficiency toward the cure of
dyspeptic disease ; and as the formation
of gastric juice is directly proportioned
to the wear and wasto of the system,
which it is to bo tho means of supplying
and this wear and waste can only take
place as the result of exercise, the point
is reached again that the efficient remedy
for dyspepsia is work outdoor work
beneficial and successful in direct propor
tion as it is agreeable, interesting and
profitable. Hull' a Health ly Good liv
ing. Virtues or Borax.
It may not be generally known how
very valuable borax is in various pur
poses of house-hold use. We find it tho
very best cockroach exterminator yet dis
discovered. One-half pound, costing but
fifty cents, has completely cleared a
largo house formerly swarming with
them, so that tho appearance of ouo in a
month ia quite a novelty. The various
exterminating powders pufled and adver
tised, have been found not fully effective
tending rather to make tho roaches crazy
then to kill them. There is something
Iieculiar cither in the smell or touch of
orax, which is certain death to them.
They will flee iu terror from it, and never
appear again where it has onco been
placed. It is also a great advantage that
borax is perfectly harmless to human
beings ; hence, no danger from poisoning.
It is also valuable for laundry purposes.
The washerwomen of Holland and Belgi
um, so proverbially clean, and who get
up their linen so beautifully white, use
refined borax as a washing powder instead
of soda, in the proportion of a large hand
ful of borax powder to ten gallons of wat
er. They Bare soap nearly one-half. All
tho largo washing establishment adopt
the same mode. For laces, cambrics, etc.,
an extra Quality of the powder is used
and for crinolines requiring to be
made stiff a stronger solution w necess
ury. Borax, being a neutral salt, does
not in the slightest de-ive injure the tex
ture of the liuen. Its effect' is to soften
the hardest water, and, therefore, it
should be kept on the t. ilct table. As a
way of cleaning the hair, nothing is bet
ter than a solution of borax in water. It
leaves tho scalp in a iuoi:-t, cleanly con
dition, and the hair is ju.-t suflieieiitly
stiffened to retain ii place. This stiff
ness, however, can bo readily removed, if
objectionable, by washing with water.
Borax is also an excellent dentrilicc ; dis
solved in water, it is one of the best tooth
washes. In hot countries it is used, in
combination witli lartaricacid and bi-car-bonatc
of soda, as a cooling beverage.
Deodorizer.
The inquiry is oficn made by fanners,
brewers, beef and pork packer;-:, etc., re
garding the best method of deordorizing
and cleansing old cider an-1 beer barrels
musty cans, bottle-'., etc. Chemistry fur
nishes an agent in the permanganate of
potassa, which fully meets this want. A
pint of the perumirjanato I turned into
the most musty, filthy cider or beer
casks and rin.-ed about a few moments,
will entirely decompose ail fungoid
growths and fermenting matter, and ren
der cask as sweet as those, that arj new.
The deodorizing, disinfecting power of
the permanganate, holdimv, as it does five
equivalents of oxygon, is wonderful; it
will even deodorize c irbolio acid. The
only way to remov e immediately the odor
of carbolic acid linn the hands, is to
immerse them iu the liquid permanganate.

THE KIDNEYS.
rpiIE Kidneys ire two In number, Bltuated nt
JL the upper part of tho loin, surrounded bv
fat, and consisting of three parts, viz i tho An
terior, tho Interior and the Exterior.
Tho Anterior absorbs. Interior consists of
tissues or veins, which servo ns a deposit for
tho urluo nnd convey it to tho Exterior. The
Exterior Is u conductor nlso, terminating iu n
single tube, nnd called the Ureter. The Ureter
are connected with the bladder.
Tho bladder Is composed of various cover
ings or tissues, divided into parts, viz. : the
Upper, the Lower, the Nervous, and tho Mucous.
The upper expels, tho lower retains. Many
have a desire to urinate without the ability;
others urinate without tho ability to retain.
Tills frequently occurs In children.
To cure these affections, wc must bring into
nction the muscles, which uro engaged in their
various functions. If they lire neglected, Gravel
or Dropsy may ensue.
The render must also be made nwnre, that
however slight may be the attack, it is sure to
nil'cct the bodily health nnd mental powers, ns
our tlcsh and blood are supported from these
sources.
Gout, oit Riiei matism. Pain occurring In
the loins arc Indicative of the above diseases.
They occur In persons disposed to acid stomach
and chalkv concretions.
The Gravel. The gravel ensues from ncsr
leet or improper treatment of tho kidneys.
These organs being weak, tho water is not ex
pelled from the bladder, but allowed to remain ;
it becomes feverish, and sediment forms. It is
from this deposit that the stone is formed and
gravel ensues.
DuorsY is a collection of w ater in some parts
of the body, and bears different names, accord
ing to the parts nU'ected, viz. : when general
ly dillused over the body, it is called Anasarca ;
ivhcn of the abdomen, Ascites ; when of the
chest, Hydrothorax.
Treatment. ITelmhohFs highly concent ra
cd compound Extract Buchu is decidedly one
of the best remedies for diseases of the blad
der, kidneys, bladder, dropsical swellings,
rheumatism and gouty nflections. Under this
head we have arranged Dysuria, or difficulty
and pain in passing water, Scanty Secretion, or
small nnd frequent discharges of water ; Stran
gury, or stopping of water ; Hematuria, or
bloody urine ; Gout nnd Rheumatism of the
kidneys, without any change in quantity, but
increase in color, or dark water. It was al
ways highly recommend by the late Dr. Phys
ick, in these aU'eetious.
This medicine increases the power of diges
tion, end excites the absorbents into henithy
exercise by which the watery or calcareous de
positions, and all unnatural enlargements, ns
well ns pain and iullaniatiou, are reduced, nnd
it is taken by men, women, nnd children. Di
rcctious for use nnd diet accompany.
Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 25,1807.
II. T. Helmdold, Drugglfet :
Deah Sin I have been a sufferer, for upward
of twenty years, with gravel, bladder, and kid
ney all'ections, during which time I have used
various medicinal prepnrntions, nnd been under
the treatment of the most eminent Physicians,
experiencing but little relief.
Having seen your preparations extensively
advertised, I consulted with my family physi
cian iu regard to using your Extract Buchu.
I did this.becausc I had used all kinds of ad
vertised remedies, nnd had found them worth
less, and, some quite injurious ; in fact, I de
spaired of ever getting well, nnd determined t
use no remedies hereafter unless I knew of the
ingredients. It was this that prompted mo to
use your remedy. As you ndvertised that it
wns composed of buchu, cubebs, and juniper
berries, it occurred to me nnd my physician ns
an excellent combination, and, with his advice,
after an examination of the article, nnd con
sulting ngniu with the druggist, I concluded to
try It. I commenced Its use ubout eight months
ago, at which time I was confined to my room.
From the first bottle I was astonished and grat
ified nt the beneficial effect, and after using It
three weeks, was able to walk out. I felt much
like writing you a full statement of my case at
the time, but thought my improvement might
only be temporary, and therefore concluded t
defer and see if it would effect a perfect cure,
knowing then it would be of moro.value to you,
and more satisfactory to me.
I am now nblo to report that a cure is effect
ed after using the remedy for live months.
I have not used any now for three mouths,
and feci as well iu all respects as I ever did.
Your Buchu being devoid of any unpleasant
taste and odor, a nice tonic und invigorntor of
the system, I do uot mean to be without it
whenever occasion may require Its use iu such
affections.
