Horse Shoeing. "We prcsumo there is no part of the treat inent of the horse which is so impor tant mid necessary to his usefulness as the shoeing. Certainly not less than half the liimcneses which ruin so many horses is occasioned by the ignorance of tho blacksmith. For Fomctime tho U. S. Government, recognizing this fact, has been in search of a method of shoeing which could bo prac ticed by any ordinarily intelligent black smith, arid which should serve as a pro tection (o the horses' feet iustcad of as had been the case with the old lack of system, doing the animal infinitely more harm than good. About a year ago, though tho influence of JJ r. llobert Bonner, Mr. Alexander Dunbar, a Canadian, who has devoted the greater portion of his life to the study of the horse, and particularly to a cor rect method of shoeing, received a com mission from the War Department, di recting him to visit tho several military posts in the country where horses were employed, and instruct tho farriers thereat iu his system. So fully impressed was Mr. Bonner with the excellence of Mr. Dunbar's meth od of shoeing, that in his letters to tho War Department, he states that had it not been for his knowledge of tho benefits to be derived therefrom, he would never havo purchased tho celebrated Dexter, whose feet, at tho time, were so contrac ted, from ignorant shoeing, as to render him quite lame. Mr. Dunbar visited Carlisle Barracks soon after the receipt of his commission and at once applied his knowledge and experience to the treatment of tho horses there. In an incredibly short spaco of time a marked improvement iu the con dition of the animal's feet was observed and up to tho present timo the system has been practiced with the most grati fying results. At Mr. Dunbar's depar ture, Mr. John Kicrnan, a most skillful farrier, was appointed to tho charge of the instruction of tho farriers at the post, and to havo general supervision of the entire shoeing department. His suc cess lias been so marked, that he has been induced to publish a work, giving his views and practice, which is destined to become standard authority on the sub ject. Carlisle Herald. Make Tour Trees Branch Low. Train your pear trees for garden or field use, so that they will branch at a distance of one or two feet from tho ground. Tho advantages are easily enu merated : 1st. It is easy to trim. 2d. It is easy to gather tho fruit. 3d. Falling fruit is little injured. 4th. All branches being sturdy, will not bo strained by over-bearing or over weight of fruit. 5th. Soil will bo kept shaded and moist. Gth Trunk will bo protected from the scorching sun. 7 th Tree will grow moro an d moro beautiful. Washing Colored Fabrics. " Before washing any colored fabrics," says tho Scientific American, " it is rec omeuded to souk them for some timo in water, to every gallon of which is added a spoonful of ox-gall. A tea cup of lye iu a pail of water is said to improve the color of black goods when it is necessary to wash them. A strong, clean tea of common hay will preserve tho color of French linens. Vinegar in tho rinsing water for pink or green, will brighten those colors, and soda answers tho same end for the purple and blue." Spots on Cornets. A few drops of carbonate of ammonia in a small quantity of rain water will, if carefully applied remove spot3 on carpets, whether produced by acids or alkalies. Carpets injured by whitewash have been perfectly restored by this simple recipe Tho following cheap and sure des truction to burdocks and other trouble some plants is worth knowing : Cut close to tho ground with a sharp hoe, and apply a few drops of kerosene. The plant so treated will never " put in ap- Tho Potato Digger. The Pittsburg Post gives the follow ing account of the working of a Potato Digger, which has been invented and manufactured in that city : It cleaned out a row at a time thorough ly, lifting every potato and depositing it on tho surface with case to the two horses and driver, and neither checked nor clog ged. It also thoroughly pulverizes the soil and leaves it level. Another point is its permanent and substantial construc tion and great simplicity. There is noth ing about it to get out of repair, and it is easily handled and propelled as an ordi nary plow. The forward part resembles somewhat a flatish tooth shovel plow. Tho rear attachment is a series of iron slats, made to lower or fall, according to tho depth of the furrow. These slat3 are nicdo to vibrate vertically, somewhat like the shaking of a windmill. This is done by an agitator wheel, which rotates as the digger advances, and by an in genious, though simplo attachment, keeps these shits agitated, thoroughly sifting tho dirt from the potatoes. I do not design a mechanical description, as tho best test of a theory is its practical results, and adopting this rule, no fur ther notice is needed, as all who havo seen it tried verify. It is sold on its merits, and- warranted to work for the low price of sixteen dollars, and is hav ing a rapid introduction. Mr. Hall can bo addressed at Pittsburg, ox the digger can be seen at S. Hare & Son's, 129 Liberty street, who are agents for its sale. YORK CONTINENTAL Life Insurance Company, OF NEW YORK, STRICTLY 31 UTUAL I A.ssoi w, ,500,000 ! Di rections for use and diet accompany. Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 25, 1807. II. T. Helmbold, Druggitt : Dear. Sin I have been a sufferer, for upward of twenty years, with gravel, bladder, and kid ney aucciions, during which time 1 have used various medicinal preparations, aud been uuder tho treatment of the most eminent Physicians, experiencing but little relief. Having seen- your preparations extensively advertised, I consulted with my family physi cian iu regard to using your Extract Buchu. I did tliis because I bad used all kinds of ad vertised remedies, and had found them worth less, and, some quite injurious ; in fact, I de spaired of ever getting well, and determined to use no remedies hereafter unless I kuew of tho Ingredients. It was this that prompted me to use your remedy. As you advertised that it was composed of buchu, cubebs, and juniper berries, It occurred to mo and my physician as an excellent combination, and, with his advice, after an examination of the article, and con sulting again with the druggist, I concluded to try it. I commenced its use about eight months ago, at which timo I was confined to my room. From the first bottle I was astonished and grat ified at tho beneficial effect, aud after using it three weeks, was able to walk out. I felt much like writing yon a full statement of my caso at the time, but thought my Improvement might only bo temporary, and therefore concluded to defer and seo if it would effect a perfect cure, knowing then it would be of moro value to you, and more satisfactory to mo. I am now able to report that a cure is effect ed after using the remedy for five months. I have not used any now for three months, and feel as well iu all respects as I over did. Your Buchu being devoid of any unpleasant taste and odor, a nico touic and invigorator of the system, I do not mean to be without it whenever occasion may requlro Its use in such affections. m.
