Clean out the bottom of the hoot' thor oughly hold up the leg so us to bring the bottom of the hoof, upward, holding it firmly in a horizontal position, and pour in, say one tablespoon ful of spirits of turpentine, if tiiev cavity of the hoof will hold that much if not, pour in what it will hold without danger of run ning over; touch the tuispentine with a red-hot iron, (that will set it on fire) ; hold the hoof firmly in position until it burns out. Great care must bo taken that none runs over on the hair or the hoof, lest the akin be burned. If all the ibet are effected, burn turpentine in each of them, tllelief - will speedily follow, and. the animal will be ready lor service in :v short .time. T.lie editor of the Allen "Watchman eays ilie had a founderpd horse treated in the manner above stated, one afternoon, . and proceeded on a journey with the ani mal next morning, without any apparent difficulty of movement. The following is an excellent plan to save trouble as well us considerable of of the best part of the peach, which is usually 4-Vikowu away when a knife is used in peeling them : Make lye as strong as possible of wood ashes aiid soft water. Till a kettle with the lye, and when boil ing rapidly drop eighteen or twenty peach es, and take out again almost immediate ly, aud immerse them in a pail of cold water. Take one in your hand, and the rind will slip off entirely, leaving a round, beautiful yellow ball ; throw it iiumcdi ; ately into another pail of pure water, and . so proceed until all are done. This pro , cess will not injure the flavor of the finest peach, and once tried, the old-fashioned way of peeling with the knife will not be adopted. Jf the lye is not strong enough, put into the kettle two dipper fulls of clean wood ashes. This is a splen did way to rid small onions of their jackets, preparatory to pickling them, al so Cor peeling tomatoes. Apple Tree Borer. This pest of our orchards lays its eggs in the mouths of Juno and July, depos iting them iu the bark near or just below the surface of the soil. These eggs soon hatch, and tho grub immediately com mences eating its way into the trees pushing its cuttings out of the hole and by this sign we may readily detect its presence. At this time the borers are very easily destroyed with a wire, or a sharp-pointed knife, but allow them to penetrate the wood several inches and it becomes quite difficult to reach them. As these borers live two or thrco years, eating continually and penetrating the tree lather a'nd farther each season, it must be apparent to every one that they should bo destroyed belbre they have done much damage. Choked Cattle. A Pennsylvania correspondent of tho Country Gentleman says, with regard to choked cattle, that he once killed a valu able Devon ox by trying to punch an ap ple down its throat with a whipstock, rupturing the 'pipe by the operation, lie suggests 'a better method as follows : "Put a rope around tho horns and draw the head up to a tree or some suita ble high place; hold the mouth open, fill it with water from a suitable vessel, close immediately the mouth and nostrils, and .hold firmly till the animal struggles ; then take the hands suddenly from the nose and mouth, and the concussion of air will move the object." Foot Rot. II. J. Selmers, veterinary surgeon, pises, iu the Western Jiural, this recipe for curing foot-rot in cattle, which he says will never fail : " At first, all tho loose horn in gener al, every thing that has been destroyed should be cut away ; then for a day or two, poultices of flaxseed powder should be applied, and after that, when the sore is clean and of a white appearance, one part of pure carbolic acid dissolved iu one part of alcohol, and one part of wa ter, applied once or twice, by means of a little hnwb, will effect a healing iu a sw days." Coal Oil Lamps. Fill your lamps by daylight, and keep them well cleaned. Never burn a lamp when it isi Jess than ono half lull of oil. Never fill a lamp near the fire. Turn the wiuk doww low before trying to blow the light out. Keep your oil iu a cool place. Coal oil if. explosive when heated. Don't let your children tneddlo with the oil or lamp. If you want to blow yourself up, pour a little out of your can on the fire to start it. Cooking Rice. Rice may be cooked so that every grain will be as separate as when dry, by steam ing. Put in as much water or milk as you would use to boil it, and set the dish in the steamer.' It will take longer to cook than in the ordinary way, but never btinik or sticks, and is a beautiful dish when done. Z&" To keep a boquct fresh, let drop a table spoonful of powdered charcoal in to the water intended for the flower sulks, and they will keep their freshness and perfume for several days, and look and smell the same as those just gathered. Tho charcoal settles at the bottom of the vase the water remain inj clear. 3STEW YORK CONTINENTAL Life Insurance Company, OF NEW YORK, S TlilVTL Y M VT UA L ! THE KIDNEYS. rplIK Kidneys ire two in nnmbcr, nitunted at 1 the tipper put t of the loin, surrounded by fat, und consisting of three parts, vl i the An terior, the Interior and the Exterior. The Anterior ubsorbs. Interior consists of tissues or veins, which eerve ns a deposit for the mine and convey it to the Exterior. Th Exterior is u conductor nlso, terminating in a single tube, and called the Ureter. The Ureters ore connected with the bladder. The bladder js composed of various cover ings or tissues, divided into rants, viz. i the Upper, the Lower, the Nervous, and the Mucous. The upper expels, tho lowr retains. Many have a desire to urinate -without the obllityj others urinate without the ability to rctuin. Tills frequently occurs In children. To cure these atlections, we must bring Into action the muscles, which are engaged in their various functions. If they are neglected, Gravel or Drops-y maj ensue. The reader must nlso be ninde aware, that however slight may be the attack, it is sure to nllcet the bodily health and mental j.oweis, as our Ilcsh and blood are supported from these sources. The gravel ensues from neg lect or improper trcatmeut of the kidneys. These organs being weak, the water is not ex pelled from the bladder, but nllowcd to remain $ it becomes Icveiisli, und sediment tonus, it is Irom this deposit that the stone is lormcd and gravel ensues. Ditorsy Is a collection of water in some ports of the body, and bears different names, accord ing to the parts ntlcctcd, viz.: when general ly ditlused over the body, it is called Anasarca ; when ol the abdomen, Ascites; when ol the chest, llydrothorax. Dkah Sin I have been a sufferer, for upward of twenty years, with gravel, bladder, and kid ney allcctions, during which time I have used various medicinal preparations, and been under the treatment, of the most eminent Physicinus, experiencing but little relief. Having seen your preparations extensively ndveitiscd, I consulted with my family physi cian in regard to using your Extract Buchu. I did this because 1 had used all kinds of ad vertised remedies, and had found tlicni worth less, and, some quite injurious ; in fact, I de spaired of ever getting well, and determined to use no remedies hereafter unless I knew of tho ingredients. It was this that prom) ted me to use your remedy. As you advertised that it was composed of buchu, eubebs, and juniper berries, it occurred to mo und my physician ns an excellent combination, and, with his advice, after tin examination of the article, and con sulting again with the druggist, I concluded to try it. I commenced its use about eight mouths ago, at which time I was confined to my room. From the liivt bottle I was astonished und grut illcd at the beneficial effect, and after using it three weeks, was able to walk out. I felt much like writing you a lull statement of my cuse at the time, but thought my improvement might only be temporal', and therefore conelnded to defer and see if it would effect a perfect cure, know ing I hen it would be of more value to you, and inoro satisfactory to me. I am now uble to report that a curcMs effect ed after using the remedy for five months. I have not used any now for three months, nnd feel as well in ufl respects as I ever did. Your Buchu being devoid of any unpleasant taste and odor, a nice tonic und Invignrutor of the system, I do not mean to be w ithout it whenever occasion may require its use in such affections. m.
