To See Down a Well.
A New Hampshire Journal of Agri
culture suggests an excellent plan for ex
ploring the bottom of a well :
" It is not generally known how easy
a matter it is to examine the bottom of
a well, cistern or poud of water by the
use of a common mirror. When the sun
is shining brightly, hold a mirror so that
the reflected rays of light will fall into
the water. A bright spot will be seen at
the bottom so light as to show the small
est object very plainly. y this means
we have examined the bottom of wells fifty
foot, deep, when half full or mure of water.
The smallest straw or other small objects
can be perfectly seen from the surface.
In the same way one can examine the
bottom of pouds nnd rivers if the water
be somewhat clear, and not agitated by
winds or rapid motion. If a well or cis
tern bo under cover, or shaded by build
ings, so that the sunlight will not fall
near the opening, it is only necessary to
employ two mirrors, using, one to reflect
the light to the opening, and another to
send it down perpendicularly in the water.
Light iu this way may be thrown fif
ty or a hundred yards to the precise
spot desired, and then reflected down
ward. We have used the mirror with
success to reflect light 'round a field to a
shaded spot, and also to carry it from a
south window through two roc.ms, and
then into a cistern under the north side
of the house. Half a dozen reflections
of the light may bo made, though each
mirror diminishes the brilliancy of the
light. Let any one not familiar with this
method try it, and he will find it not only
useful, but a pleasing experiment. It
will, perhaps, reveal a mass of sediment
at the bottom of a well that was little
thought of, but which may have been a
fruitful source of disease, by its decay in
the water."
Girl Farmers.
Located six miles west of St. Paul,
51 inn., there is a farm under a good state
of cultivation, which was reclaimed from
the wildernesss only three years ago by
seven sisters, who procured a pre-emption
title to the same, and now till it, unaided
by the labor or advice of the " sterner
sex." In ' 1S67 tho parents of these
- girls lived in Ohio, were very poor, and
both confirmed invalids. Iu this straight
the girls resolved to emigrate to Minneso
ta and try their luck at fanning, securing
their land by compliance with the terms
of the pre-emption laws. How well they
have succeeded iu their novel undertaking
will be comprehended when wo state that
last year they sold nine hundred bushels
of potatoes, five hundred bushels of corn,
two hundred and fifty bushels of wheat,
and six hundred bushels of miscellane
ous vegetables. They arc, in fact, quite
independent, and able to provide their in
valid parents with a good home. So much
for girls farming in the West.
Valuable Table of Dry Measure.
A box 1G by 24 inches square, and 28
inches deep, will contain one barrel.
A box 16 by 24 inches square, and
14 inches deep, will contain a half-barrel.
A box 16 by 16 inches square, and 16
8-10 inches deep, will contain one
bushel.
A box 12 by 11 2-10 inches square,
and 8 8-10 inches deep will contain half
a bushel.
A box 8 by 8 4-10 inches square and
8 8-10 inches deep,will contain one peck.
" A box 8 by 8 4-10 inches square, and
4 2-10 inches deep, will contain a half
peck. A box 7 by 4 inches square, and 4
8-10 inches deep, will contain a half-gallon.
A box 4 by 4 inches square, and 4 2-10
inches deep, will contain one quart.

Dear Sik I have been a sutl'erer, for upward
of twenty years, with gravel, bladder, and kid
ney allectious, during i hich time I have used
various medicinal preparations, and been under
the treatment of the most eminent PliysieiauB,
experiencing but little relief.
Having seen your preparations extensively
advertised, I consulted w ith my family physi
cian In regard to using your Ex tract Bucliu.
I did tliis because I had used all kinds of od
vertiscd remedies, and had found them woith
lcss, nnd, some quite injurious ; in fact, I de
spaired of ever getting well, and determined t
use no remedies hereafter unless I knew of the
ingredients. It was this that prom ted me to
use your remedy. As you advertised that it
was composed of buchu, cubebs, nnd juniper
berries, it occurred to me and my physician as
an excellent combination, and, w ith his advice,
after nn examination of the article, and con
sulting ngaiq with tho druggist, I concluded to
try it. I commenced its use about eight months
ago, at which time I was confined to my room.
From the first bottle I was astonished and grat
illed ut the benellcial effect, and after using it
three weeks, was able to walk out. I feit much
like writing you u full statement of iny case at
the time, but thought my improvement might
only be temporary, and therefore concluded to
defer and see if it would effect a perfect cure,
knowing then it would be of more value to you,
and more satisfactory to me.
I am now able to report that a cure is effect
ed after using the remedy for five months.
I have net used any now for three months,
and feel ns well in all respects as I ever did.
Your Buchu being devoid of any unpleasant
taste and odor, a nice tonic and invlgorutor of
the system, I do not mean to be without it
whenever occasion may require its ubb in such
affections.
