James Gray, of Elliottsburg, proposes to

ing tho Government, has put in tho plea of
iusanity. Is any man who spends his time
iu making stuff of that kind, or his money
for it as a beverage entirely sane ?

Dukes, at Shermansdalc, in this county,
committed suicide in tho storo of W. II.
Lauscr, nt llarrisburg. About a week
sineo Blohr went to Bridgeport, whero ho
has since been stopping. From there ho
wrote a very desponding letter back to his
friends at Shermansdalc, biddding them
farewell, saying ho should not see them
again. Early on Thursday morning ho
went to tho different hardware stores in
llarrisburg, cxaming pistols, and finally se
lected one at Mr. Lawser's, which ho re
quested him to load. This he did and turn
ed to get a holster in accordance with
Blohr s request, when ho heard the re
port of the pistol, and turning around found
that tho man had shot himself, by placing
the niuzzlo of tho pistol in his mouth. Au
inquest was held, and a verdict was render
ed in accordance with tho above facts.
Mr. Dukes upon receiving notice of the
affair, removed the remains of the deceased.

wich. Five years after, Clough disap
peared, and it was shortly afterwards re
ported that he had died in Massachu
setts. Mrs. Clough was married by and
by to Nahala Davis, and they have lived
in Norwich ever since ; have raised quite
a family of children, and accumulated
considerable property. The farm is deed
ed to iirs. Davis. A tew tlays ago
Clough reappeared, claiming his wife,
and perhaps hoping to get possession of
the property.

trying a case involving a right of proper
ty to a lot ot pigs, said : " Gentlemen ot
the jury, there was just twenty-four pigs
in that drove just twenty-four, gentle
men exactly twice as many as there are
in that jury box."

ton, and says : li She died apparently early
in the day, and while some of her neigh
bors were engaged iu laying her out, the
corpse, as it was supposed to be, commen
ced winking, and finally rallied and lived
several hours, when she died anain .'"

Some Kiulish. Mr. William Wood, re
siding in Savillo township, cut, last week, a
radish which weighed over six pounds, and
was as sound and sweet its any such vege
table would bo in the summer time. Who
can beat that ?
Church Xotices.
V- Puralytic Stroke. On Tuesday last,
Judge James Black, formerly of Saville
township, but now a resident of this bor
ough, had a paralytic stroke. Wo are glad
to be able to state that ho is fast recovering
his usual health.
Painful Accident. On hist Monday,
Charles, son of Rev. G. W. Bouse, had his
shoulder blade broken, by falling down
stairs, at his fathei's residence, in this place.
Tho fracture was adjusted by Dr. Ard, ami
the child is doing as well as could be expected.
A chicken was hatched at tho residence
of Mr. Daniel Iloilinger, on Saturday last,
says the Carlisle Jleraid, that had four legs.
This monstrosity appears as lively as tho
rest of tho brood, and bids fair to grow to
a tender spring chicken, a matronly hen, or
it staid sober rooster.
Iu the Presbyterian Church prayer meet
ing on Wednesday evening. Preaching on
Sunday morning, at 10J o'clock. Young
men's prayer meeting on Saturday eve
ning at the house of Mr. Wm. Grter.
In the Reformed Church, prayer-meeting
on Thursday evening ; preaching at 2 J p. m.
on Sunday next.
In tho 31. E. Church prayer meeting on
Thursday and Sunday evenings. No preach
ing on Sabbath, owing to Conference,
which meets at Lewistown, Pa., on tho 10th
instant.

A sad affair occurred at Greenwood Fur
nace, Mifflin county, on Thursday last,
March ild, by a little son of J. Gregg, aged
about three years, killing his sister, a babe
only five mouths old, with a hammer. The
chill was lying in the cradle, and tho hoy
struck her on the head with the hammer,
no doubt in play or without intending to
harm her, killing her instantly. No one
was present at the time. Gazette.

Thrown from n Horse. On Thursday
last, a son of Mr. Robert McDonald, of
Patterson, aged about twelve years, was
thrown from a horse and tramped on the
right leg between tho knee and ankle. Tho
bono was layed baro for a distance of seven
pitches. Dr. Banks was immediately called
and rendered all necessary attention. At
last accounts tho patient was on a fair way

The " Times" is crying again about the
mail facilities, the new change docs not
suit them tiny better than tho old time.

Their Verdict. Tho Janesville (Wis.)
Gazette recently had access to a jury room,
where six "true and lawful men" had de
liberated upon a case of assault and bat
tery, and found the following ballots left
behind them :
Juror No. 1 voted, ''No cose of action ;"
No. 2 voted, "Salt and batery, Second
DeGreo ;" No, !J deemed tho prisoner
'Gilty of salt ;" No. 4 decided thero was
"no action of cans;" No. 5 voted it "as
sault and Batory ;" while No. 0 decided tho
prisoner "Gilty of salt only."

cinity, . May tho Lutherans bo successful
in converting tho remainder.
Tho Rev. Mr. Richmond, member of tho
Church of God, commenced a protracted
meeting in tlw log meeting house, in Little
Germany, on this evening.
Thero are a number of persous in this
placo also, and heads of families, who make
no profession of religion, and it is certainty
high time that they bo wakened up to a
