There is a youns lady in town so
modest that tho had a young man turned
out ot doors for saying that tho wind had
Bhiiteu.
ISST " My dear doctor." said a lady,"'
I sutler a great deal with my eyes." JJo
patient, madam," he replied;" you would
probably suffer a great deal more without
them."
My son," said a man of doubtful
morals, mittinsr his hand on the hoa.l of :v
young urchin, " I believe Satan Iuifi :;ot

urchin replied.
&fr A smart Yankee old lady being
called into court as witness, grew impa
tient at the questions put to her, and told
the judge that she would quit tho stand,
for ho was "really one of the most inquisi
tive old gentlemen she ever see."
ttaf " Nature has written ,honcst man' "
on his face," said a man to JcrroM,
speaking of a person in whom Jerrold's
faith was not altogether blind.
" Humph !" Jerrold replied. " then tho
pen must have been a very bad one."
Sy" Talken' of law," says Potupoy,
" reminds me of what tho 'mortal Cato,
who lib most a thousan' ycara ago, once
said do law is like a groun' glass winder,
that gives light cnuff to light us poor er
ron' mortals in do dark passage of life,
but it puzzle do dcbblo himscif to see troo
it."
BSaT" A pompous individual walked up
to. the bar of the sea-sido hotel, and witlt
considerable flourish,, signed tho book,
and exclaimed:
" I'm lieutenant-governor of "
"That don't mako any difference,"
says the laudlord, "you will be treated
just as well as the others."
2f " Papa," said Tommy, the other
day, " is it a sin to change one's mind ?"
" Well, do, my,, boy ; why do you.
ask ?"
" O, you know," replied tho five-year-old,
' I was to be a doctor."
" O yes, I remember," said his father;
" what then ?"
" Wei!, if you please, I think now that
I'd rather be a candy-store!"
tr " Look out there, what are you
kicking my dog for?"
"Pm kicking him 'cause he's full of
fleas, and 1 don't want to get 'em ou my
good clothes,"
" Fleas, the dickens ! Why, thnt dog
sleeps with mo !"
"I know it, and that's were ho gets
them."
JCST " Twas in tho lovely month of
June, I courted Lizzie Lee; tho crested
wavelits murmured, and tho moonbeams
kissed tho sea: I whispered in her ear
soft words, her hands in mine I prest ;
and, as I drew her nearer still well,
never mind tho rest ! Wo wandered
slowly, hand in hand, with heads together
bowed : our words were low and softly
said our sighs were long and loud; I ask
ed her if she loved me, and her head
drooped on my breast, I listened and
tho answer was well, never mind tho
rest ! The evening deepened into night,
and stars lit up tho sky; again I whis
deredr and again her answer was, 11 sigh.
At that fair shrine I humbly kuelt, mv
hope and love confessed ; 1 was absolved";
a day was named and, never mind tho
rest ! The happy moments passed away,
tho time at length arrived; my bliss was
si ecstatic, 'tis a wonder I survived. Of
course sho was with lace enrobed, with
orange blossomsdrest : and in a copy ,
you'll surely find the rest 1"
Didut Enjoy Herself as Usual.
As nn original expression of heavy
grief wo doubt if anything more touching
has been read than tho following of a
crushed heart, in Star City, Nevada.
Mrs. 'of that place, an eceeutric old
lady recently rushed into tho room ofu
relative, and without waiting for tho
usual salutation, said :
" Well ! John's dead 1"
" Dead ! Is it possible
' lres dead ! Died last night ! I wand
you all to come to tho funeral. Tho
Masons and Odd Fellowa aro going to
turn out, and wo shall have a beautiful
time."
Death being of rare occurrenco iu tho
settlement, of course- every body went to
tho funeral. Next day, somebody re
marked to tho old lady that there was a
largo turnout.
" Yes, indeed, thero was," she replied,
"but I didn't enjoy myself as woll as I
have at some funerals, tho horses cut up
bo." 1
