Yellow Fat In Hogs.
Mr. Editor : Having seen several (torn
rnunientions in The Times in regard to yel
low fat in liogs, I would say that Mr. 51.
Shatto, of Watts township, informed mo
that ho had a breed of hogs for several
years, that when killed the fat and lard
present a yellow appearance. Mr. E. I).
Wells, butcher of this place, killed some of
tho hogs for Mr. Shatto, and they think
tli at it is in tho breed of hogs, more than
from feed or any other cause, that tho fat is
yellow. Tho only difference in tho meat of
this and other breeds, is that it is harder
and not so tendor as that Of other broods.

Get Leather Bits.
One of the most cruel things to
ilutub beasts is putting frozen iron bits
into a horse's mouth. It is notonly pain
ful but a dangerous act. For every time
living flesh touches a metal much below
the freezing point, the latter extracts the
heat from tho former and freezes it.
Thus a horse's mouth becomes frozen by
the cold iron several times a day put into
it ; each time causing these .freezings to go
deeper and deeper, to end at last iu ex
tensive ulceration. With such a sore
mouth the poor horse refuses to cat and
pines away, which calls the horse doctor
in. They call it bots, glanders, horse-ail,
&o., and go to cramming down poisonous
drugs in big doses; and the next you
know of the poor abused creature, he is
truddled off to bo food for fish or the
crows. Many a valuable horse has been
" mysteriously," lost, in just that way.
Thinking and human people avoid this
by first warming tho bits ; but this is
much trouble, and sometimes impossible
as in night work like staging and phy
sician's work. Now all this trouble and
loss are entirely avoided as we have found
on long trial, by getting the haroess
makers to get leather bits for winter use,
so made that no metal substance can
touch tho flesh. They are durable and
cost only half a dollar. We wouldn't ex
change ours for a gold one, if it couldn't
be replaced. Don't fail to try it.
Heaves in Horses.
Seeing spearment and other articles re
commended for horses prompts me to
mention my experience with another
valuble herb in the cure of this distress
ing and troublesome complaint. Feed no
hay to the horse for tBirty-six or forty
eight hours, and give only a pailful of
water at a time. Then throw an armful
of well-cured smartweed before him, and
let him cat all he will. In all cases where
the cells of the lungs are not broken down
great relief if not a perfect cure will fol
low. I have seen a horse, with the
heaves as bad as I ever saw, cured by one
dose. Smartweed is valuble for many
purposes, and should be laid away for use
when needed.
Points of u Good Cow.
She's long in her face, she's fine in her
horn, she'll rfuickly get fat without cake
or corn ; Ehe's clean in her jaw, and full
in her chin ; she's heavy in the flank and
wide in loin ; she's broad in her rib, and
long in her rump. A straight and flat
back with never a hump ; she's wide in
her hips, and calm in her eyes ; 6he's fine
in her shoulders, and thin in her thighs;
she's light in her neck and small in her
tail ; she's wide in her breast, and good
at the pail; she's fine in her bone, and
silky of skin ; she's a grazier's without
and butcher's within.
A Horse Breaking Its Halter,
to prevent a horse from breaking its
halter, procure a small, hard, strong cord,
from eight to ten feet long; put the
harness on the horse ; bueklo the girth
tight ; make a slipping noose on one end
of the cord and put it around the horse's
tail, close to the body ; slip the other
through the turret and bit-ring,and hitch
tho horse to a post, and leave it to itsolf.
Two or three lessons will cure any horse.
- American Fanner.
Milkers versus Milking,
Tho quantity of milk drawn from a
cow per annum depends more than some
imagine upon the milker. Tho best cow
in the world may sooh be spoiled by care
less and irregular milking, whereas as an
ordinary animal hiy bo mado to yield
much more of tho delicious beverage than
usual, by the right performance of this
simplo operation. To find a good cow is
not an easy thing but more easy than to
find ah accomplished; milker.
