Million's Mngnzine for February is at
hand and contains its usual variety of inter
esting and instructive reading. It is cer
tainly the cheapest magazine we know of.

Aeddcut. On Monday of last week, tho
horses of Mr. John Kell, of Kye township,
took fright at the blowing of a whistle
while passing the round house at MaryV
ville, and threw him on tho hames of the
saddle horse, injuring him considerably in
ternally. Horse Thieves. Sometime during last
Saturday night, some person or persons
stole a dark bay horse and a buggy from
the stable of Mr. Wertz, in Carlisle On
Sunday, the stolen property was traced
to where the roads fork, about two miles
east of this borough, but from there the
parties in pursuit got on the wrong route.
Xjuieres. While an exhibition was in
progress at New Gcnnantown a few even
ings since, which was attended by Mr.
Noel's family, some person entered their
house and stole a quantity of wheat and
buck wheat Hour, corn meal &a. They were
evidently putting in a winter supply of pro
visions, without money and without price.
SJUiiilding Association. A building asso
ciation has been organized at Marysville.
They are determined to have their borough
one of the progressive kind. The ollicers

Disturbing Religious Meetings. The fol
lowing from the York county True Demo
crat, may bo read with advantage in many
parts of our own county.
A young man by the name of Adam
Seachrist was tried in the court last week,
and convicted for disturbing a religious
meeting oh tho 19th of March last, in tho
U. Brethern, in Dallastown, York co. In
order to avoid disturbance and confusion,
during service, the trustees of tho congre
gation had established a rule that all por
sons leaving the house before the congre
gation was dismissed, should retire by a
side door, witli which fact Seachrist was
well acquainted. Notwithstanding this, he
insisted upon violating the rule, and the
noise and confusion occasioned by his leav
ing that night at the wrong door was such
as to break up the meeting. The charge of
tho Hon. Robt. J. Fisher, tho Presiding
Judge, to tho Jury, was such as to rellect
great credit upon the head and heart of
that able and distinguished jurist. A reli
gious congregation has a right to make
rules for tlie government of their serviees in
the house m which they are held, and per
sons knowingly violating them, are liable to
the penalty imposed by the Act of Assem
bly passed for their protection. There are
young men, and others not so yong, who
are in tho habit of attending our diliorent
churches where services are now regularly
held during the week, not so much for de
riving any benefit from tho serviees as to
gratify au idle curiosity of ''seeing and
being seen." While there, they behave
themselves in an unseemly manner, by talk
ing and laughing and squirting tobacco juice
on the floor, and they are all liable to the
penalty imposed by our Act of Assembly,
heaehrist, in the case mentioned, was
onteueed to pay a fine of five dollars, tho
costs of proectttion and undergo an impris
onment of iifteeu days in tbo county jail.

Slid lie n Death. On Thursday afternoon,
about four o'clock, Benjamin Biggs, sen.,
died suddenly, at the residence of his sou,
in this place. We learn his death was
produced by apoplexy, ho expiring imme
diately after receiving the stroke Mr. B.
was a native of Maryland, but has been
for some years residing with his son, in this
place, lie was social and cheerful in his
disposition, and was greatly respected by
all who knew him. His age was bo venty

' vMk. Editoii : Sir, I seo you take an in
terest in tho railroad scheme, which has
been going on in our valley for at least ten
years, to fool and humbug out honest farm
ers and mechanics. It is now time for the
leaders of this railroad to see their folly
and give it up for a bad job.
I will take some of tho wool off their
eyes. I have no belief in a railroad ever
running through this littlo valley, and
I think it is a great nonsense to talk about
it, lor if it was made there would not
be enough of business to pay for keep
ing it up, and would do more damage than
it would be worth.
Our fathers got along right well without
a railroad and had to haul their produco to
Baltimore on wagons, and I think we should
be satisfied to live as they did. A few years
ago our people invested their money in oil
stock, and some in silver mines, and that
was the last they scon of it. Just so it will
be with tho Railroad. There are always
some persons who are not satisfied to let
well enough alone, ami who.are going about
with some new scheme, seeking whom
they may devour, but they never catch me
in their trap, for I am too sharp for them.
I never go in for patent rights or any other
mean humbug contrivance, but try to live
in the good old way our fathers lived. I
want you to bo sure to publish this article
as it is for the interest and welfare
of your good readers, but if you or
some other person has any objections or re
ply to make to it, I hopo you will publish
it also, in order that all can seo both sides
of tho question and judge for themselves

this neighborhood are much delighted with
tho enlarged form of your excellent paper,
and tho general expression heard of it is,
The cheapest and best paper in the county.
For some timo, and at tho present, quite
a religious interest prevails in this neigh
borhood, as tho effect of a series of meet
ings being held at School House No. 5,
by the Rev. Messrs. Miller and Swingle,
minister of the Evangelical Association.
Among the seekers are some of tho mo it
hardened cases in tho neighborhood. This
is a new appointment and promises to be
one of some influence.
As items of nows though rathor stale,
we will mention that Mr. William Bakor's
store of this place was brokon into a few
nights ago, by soma burglars and robbed
of Rome of its valuables.
Mr. Lobaugh will shortly occupy the
store room at tho cornowecently vacated by

In Demand. Lewis Potter, Esq. of this
borough was appointed, a few days ago,
Agent of the iEtna Fire Insurance Co., of
Hartford, Conn., by T. Kirk Whito, Esq.,

oldeHt companies in the United Statos, and
the losses paid in fifty years has amounted
to almost thirty-six millions of dollars.

was recently killed by S. V. Sharpo at

On last Thursday wc saw farmers plow
ing, while pawing through Lancaster Co.
The Inaugural ion of Governor Geary is
to lake place to-day. Quite a military dis
play is expected.
Mr. Daniel Gallatin, one of the oldest
citizens in tho borouirh, died on Saturday
last.
"Carlisle is having ninny car-cs of scarlet
fever, and what is nearly as bad, has the
velocipede mania again.
A meeting lor the purpose ot raising
funds for the improvement of the I'resby
teilan Church, in this borough, was held
last week. It is a work that is badly
uceded.
The Ger. P.e.f. Church recently com
pleted ;it Newport, was dedicated to the
Triune God, on Sabbath last. The total
cost was some (5.000. The balance of
indebtedness was $1 ,(l!G of which $1 .250
was subscribed on the occasion. Leaving
some $100 yet unpaid.
BrJJuTlio Huntingdon County Grand
Jury, for this term have returned three
bills of indictment against Gotlicb Buh
ner and Albert Vanbordenburg, for the
murder of John l'eightel and Scott Gar
ner. On the 18th inst., the prisoners
were brought into ourt, arraigned accor
ding to the forms of law, and a jury was
ealft d and sworn in. The trial will pro
ceed at once, and will probably conclude
on Monday or Tuesday of this week.
The Trial promsies to be of unusual in
terest. The counsel for the Common
wealth arc Milton 8. Lylle, District Attor
ney, P. M. Lylle and 11. B. I'elsckeu.
The Court assigned It. Milton Speor and
S. T. Brown for the defendants. A crowd
of people filled the court-room, all eagerto
got a sight at the prisoners. Vanborden
burg, in answering to his arraignment,
said very distinctly ;i I am not guilty,"
while Bohner responded in a less aubible
tone of voice.
The appearance of the prisoners has
improved during their incarceration.
They conduct themselves as complacently
as could be possible under the circumstan
