(Corry. pondonce of no Phila. Evening Bulletin.' Explosion of Powder Mills. Oct. 3, IS7O. 2 —At half-past twelve, noon, on Saturday last, there caine a sudden double explosion, with a roar which swelled to a erpsh that shook houses and rat tled windows almost to bursting them from their frames. Not until anihour later was the cause known; and then numbers oc people, on foot and in carriages, hurried to a little hamlet known as Smithville, on the Minehilltailroad, about a mile from Cressona and three miles from this place, where the powder works of Laflin & Rand had exploded. • These works were in three buildings, situated in a line parallel with the railroad, and about fifty yards apart. At the time of the explosion Hobert idell wain, the ford-man, and a young man named Jacob Lehr, were engaged in packing powder in the drying-houses and ma eazine:which were under one roof. A team- Stet, who was assisting them, had just left the buildina and driven to another.; about a hun dred-yin distant, for'a: - fresh supply of kegs; wiwn. by.some means ire,,ver to be explained, the jawd6.l - in the drying-house became ig nited and sent the building into the air, as only powder can, and, as quickly as a dash of powder can travel fifty yards, the corning and glazing mill, which stood next, followed the magazine. Then all was over, and the frightened neighbors who came run ning to the scene 'build nothing but a field strewn with blackened splinters, and the ruins of the corning mill. Of the dry-house and manzinclidt,.even the ruins were left. Fif teen thousand pounds of powder had simply blow'', it away. The fragments scattered over the field v. ere those of the corning mill, in which was a comparatively small amount of powder, live' hundred pounds, or thereabouts, which merely blew _ the building into frag ments, leaving the foundation intact, and most of. the machinery in place; though a ledge of rocks, across the railroad, • two hun dred feet away, bears testimony on its bat tered face that bricks were thrown that dis tance with force sufficient to pulverize tliem hen they struck. / Illothi ' The first inquiry was tor l the two men who were known to have been in the magazine, and who had disappeared as completely' ashad the building. After patient search their mutilated remains began to be picked up--a: few in the field, a few on the banks of the stream which skirted it, a few more in tlxwoods beyond the stream---the largest fragiiienl,a naked foot, torn off abbve the ankle, was picked up two huu ifdred yards away. A very small box held all that could be found of the blackened bits of flesh which, a few moments before, were parts Of living men, but which must be interred in a common grave, so utterly unreeognizable. were they. The company's loss is said to be about $6,000. The. works are to be rebuilt at Duce, and will be running again in a few weeks. • This Is the second explosion of the' .kiiid i‘dfich has happened recently, the other having been the Indian Mills of Wren & Co., whi v i exploded at night, and; it is supposed, by the act of au incendiary,' fortunately without work again. any one, and which are already at work Military.
