,Never
rheleSs,.our winter clothing is being got ready
for us, and even now, in August,
while we generally think only of " thin
things," our heavy garments, quilted
and padded, are in process of
Iveparation. We are wondering what the
, tyles will be, but the styles have all been de
termined ' upon these two months, and long
, since were put in the 'hands of the clothing
men. And on these models Beeman& of cut
ters and tailors hate been building our winter
sheiterings all through the summer months.
Go, at the beginning of a season, into a large
clothing-house; for instance, take the largest
of them all, Wanamaker & Brown's, and you
wonder where the immense piles of garments
all come from, and little think that from three
to six full months previous, the busy em
ployits of the house have been hard at it pre
paring these woolempyramidsAtthis minute
wore than two thousand busy people are at
work cutting and sewing, trimming and press
; lig. and mote than two hundred machines
seep up their incessant clatter, preparing
-toe': for this 'obe single establishinent—Oali
hall. Miles of cloth and cartloads of
ilk are being used up; mil
lons of buttons and thousands- of buckleS
ire being sewed on. The three upper

i daeards on the pavement still announce
• Hands wanted." During the past season the
-a; les of Oak H all amounted on some single days
t o over SI.),000, and the Cashier's office was like
bank, whose only function was receiving
;r -posits and whose only officers were re
avi lig-tellers. People said Wanam
ieeat_was "coining - 1 money. 1S:ow we see the
ether side. Sauce the lasi winter's trade
a early 51,000,000 worth Of, goods have been
aaaanufaetured, and every week thousands of
dollars arc paid to " hands," The single little
esjgpiticant, item of buttons used on the stock
of tall clothing now being manufactured at
lak Hall would puzzle any one to count, and
sewing -silk, which is accounted as nothing in
the cost of a garment, becomes a large item in
he aggregate.
It requires considerable nerve to make such
expenditures so runny months in advance of
ally return, and subject to so many coutingen
ad es of weather and war, good or bad times
hut some men have nerve, and when directed
ay a sound judgment, this is the one secret of
unparalleled success.
Dill] times never come to an establishment
like Oak Hall, for if the advancing season
lessens the sales on the first three floors, the
nearer approach of the next season redoubles
the industry of the upper three, and so it is
busy season" at Sixth and Market all the
rear round.
