THE NAVY YARD Ronium.---The man ar rested for attempting to rob the Paymaster's safe at the Navy lard, yesterday morning, Lad a hearing at the Central Station this after noon. He gave his name as Edward Land man. Paymaster James Fulton testified that he locked up the safe and left everythingin order on Wednesday afternoon. Yesterday morn ing be found the 'outer lock broken and two 'holes in the safe: The'safe - was - not open: It contained only $375 of Government money - at the time. , - James MeDevitt,,a marine, testified to see! ing three men getting over the wail. Two got away, and he captured the defendant. Sergeant JobnNewell, U. S. M. C., testified that he was present , when defendant was searched. He icientified the articles found as described in yesterday's BULLETIN. - Sergeant John. Newell, U. S. M. C., testified that the jimmy and other tools were found near to the Paymaster's sate. Private John May, U. S. M. C., testified that he had teconversation with the prisoner in the guard-house.::_Heliad been offered money and some keys, 661 - atter' to be thrown away and the former to be kept. Corporal Willis D. Gould corroborated the evidence of Sergeant Newell: The defendant was then committed for POLICEMAN SHOT AT.—Pglicemeu Shun of the Fifth District and Harrigan of the •Sixth - -District came together at Eighth and Chestnut streets at 3 o'clock this morning. They heard a loud crash of broken glass. The sound ap peared to come from an alley running from Seventh to Eighth streets, between Chestnut and Sansom streets. The officers went to this alley. Shern got upon the fence,at the rear of the yard of a house on Sansom street. As did so a shot was fired at him. lie immediately got down from the fence and then the party on the other side escaped. A fiirther exami nation showed that an unoccupied dwelling, N0...809 Sansom street, had been entered, and the crash beard - by the officers was caused by he smashing..of the_glass in the cellar window. _.. Nothing was stolen. is supposedthat the thieves had designs on some of the siirround ing.properties. CHARGED WITH Est akzz LEMENT.—Charles Kuban Is as before. Alderman Kerr this afternoon on the charge of embezzlement. Be was an agent of the Society for the Pre vention of Cruelty to Animals. That Society has been in the habit of appropriating a cer tain sum per 'head for dogs captured. During several weeks $96 cents were give.n to him to band to the dog-catchers, and the latter ' never got the money. Kuban was held in .5. TOO bail to answer. STORE ROBBERY.—Some time during last night the wholesale ~ r ocery store of Thorn ton Baines, :Co. 324 North Delaware avenue. was entered by thieves. Flow the entrance was effected is not known. Two bags. of coffee, ten chests of tea, and other articles were carried off. The value of the -property stolen is not known;ret present. It is supposed the-robbers used awagon to carry..off- the ilunder. A SEVERE Blow.—Last evening between 0 and 10 o'clock there was a severe storm of wind accompanied by a shower of rain. The seemed to ihe heaviest about Chestnut Bill. There it' was a miniature hurricane. Trees were, stripped of their foliage and some of the branches were torn off. As tar as as certained, however, no serious damage was done. The storm had the effect of cooling the atmosphere, and the weather to-day is very pleasant. DEATH IN A STATIoN-Huusr..—A man was found on the sidewalk in Birch street, in the. neighborhood of Fifteenth and Fitzwater streets, last evening, apparently very ill. Po liceman McQuaid took him to the First. Dis trict Police station. The sufferer died before medical aid could be summoned. The deceased was about forty years of age. He appeared to be a varaut, and had nothing about him to show his name. SEnteusf.r INJURED. -At Seventh and Jayne streets yesterday afternoon about live o'clock, William Duckett began to tantalize a newsboy. The youth got exasperated, and seizing a piece of iron threw it at his tor mentor. The -missile-struck-Duckett ,on the, bead, causing a severe wound. The injured man was.taken to the Pennsylvania Hospital by Policeman Roach. JuVENI LE Ho USE BREAKERS.—The two boys, James Devine and James Hughes, who were fonnd in the house No. 1410 Arch street, Were before Aid. Kerr this afternOon. Mr. H \V. Colesberry, residing at No, 520 North Nineteenth street, whose house was robbed on 'Wednesday last, identified some o the clothing which was on the youths. The Juveniles were sent below. S. Crother, aliag C. S. Smith, who had been some time since arrested in Camden, on a charge of having robbed the firm of Messrs. Chapin & C 0.,. at. Lawrence, Massa chusetts, of quite a large amount of goods, about $2,000 worth of them having been re covered in Camden. The prisoner was com mitted to await a requisition to be removed to Massachusetts. FINISHING A CHURCIL—The work on the Tabernacle Methodist Church of North Ward is now being finished. This edifice,_ when completed, -will-be-a commodious and -very convenient structure. The congregation de serve great credit for their efforts and success in providing themselves with such a fine house of worship. Tninn STREET.—Third street from Market to Stevens streets is in almost an impassable condition by the dirt and paving -stones which have been torn up for the nurpose of laying down gas pipes, and as it has been in this con dition for some time, the Street Committee ought to see that it is repaired. EXCITING Timiss.—Politicians are making times quite exciting and lively in Camden just now. The county clerkship seems to be the great centre of attraction. EXCURSION TO LONG Bumicit.—Beck's Philadelhia Band, No. 1, will give an excur sion to Long Branch to-morrow. The first boat will leave Walnut street wharf at 7.30 A. M. From Camden a special train on'the Cam den, Burlington and New Jersey Southern tonreY 'the party.. to Long Branch, where the day may be delightfully spent.. Besides the fine hathing,„ there wilt he a tiumber of specialties at the ltraiich. that day—the first day of the'frotti trotti ng matches at Monmouth Park, and a dross parade of the Ninth New York Regiment, under the com mand of Colonel Fisk. Returning, the train will leave at 7 P.M. All of the excursions given by Beck's Band \this season have been splendid affairs, and the participants have always en joyed themselves, and this excursion will doubtless be as fine as any of the previous ones.
