THE RETAIL MARKETS.—PeopIe who de
pend for their living upon Wednesday and
Saturday's business in the markets, just now.
are doing that business in anything but a gold
mine. This applies to retailers of produce.
The wholesale traders in everythkdig that goes
to the were never more busy during the
corresponding season than they are at this mo
ment.
At no period, probably, were there more ab
sentees from the city than there are now.
Farm houses all around us, barring the bar
- rooms, are extemporized hotels. Cape May
and Atlantic City are filled like sheep-pens.
What with the camp-meeting and the races as
extras to its regular business, Long Branch is
so filled that a shake-down in a billiard-room
corner is not only put un with, but coveted.
There are-camp-meetings-going on in other
quarters, and the country resorts all around us
are filled with people. These people must be
fed. In order to do this, before Philadelphia
is out of its bed purveyors in their interest
have stripped the wholesale dealers of every
thing that comes on• bills of fares in the shape
of delicacies.
And b,v the way, this hotel bill of fare busi
ness is often a farce of the -flimsiest . possible
character. Upon your carte you find " Stewed
Sweet-breads, with Mushrooms." Of this en
tree there may have been sufficient to swear
by, but no more. The waiter, after receiving
his douceur, regretfully remarks : " Wall, sah,
'l.'se sorry, sah, but de lac' is,de ias' one 's just
gone." The bills announce in hotel French
black-bird pie. The - darkey; after a desperate
dive,
succeeds iu placing before you a diminu
tive bit of puff paste, and pair of blackbird's
feet. - Though the cartes are not full of so un.l
and fury, signifying nothing, they may often
be set. down as lists of appetizing titles for
dishes existing only in the imagination,of the
hotel steward.
That prices of everything edible were high
in the markets, this morning, is not to be
wondered at. Certain parties, for in
shipped from Fifth Street Market, this
morning, to Cape May, more than a ton of
_poultry. The wholesale salmon-stand, in the
same market, was sold out. Our reporter
smiled as a certain elderly and extremely
penurious gentleman, in a rattled shirt and
last-century-.fob-chain,-presented himself ate
__stall _to _secure hie customary._ purchase, of
sweetbreads. The old gentleman was attired
in blue coat and brass buttons, with a tail
shaped like - a steel pen, and buttons that shone
like half eagles with the eagle ground...and
poliShed oft—the kind of tails_eperted‘by the
coats of Gen. Patterson andDayid. Paul Brown.
4 ‘ Haven't got any, sir, this morning," was the
reply. "And.pray why . not,. sir 2" "All sold
—gone to Cape May, sir. Don't have many
now. -Don't kill so-many animals in hot as in
cold-weather."-- "rAnd:do you think, sir, _that
you have a right," asked th6indignant goer
„wand, "to scud everything tit to eat to 'Cape
May or any other place, and leave us to
4 starve,” ," 'sir, said the _sweetbread •
man, " the case is this : Had you ordered
-- what you wanted; and expressed a willingness—
to pay the price I'd'have kept it for you.
During the time that you would have spent in
haggling over the prim) of half a dollars worth
of sweetbreads, and have. paid me in ragged
currenotfOrthem - even at that, I received the
check of__the proprietor of the Columbia
House for my entire stock, and :at my own
price." - The old gentleman gave the dealer an
indignant look, and vented his spite by invest
ing in a knuckle of veal.
The prices of butchers' meat to-day are the
prices of _last week. In poultry there is no
change. Springehickens are especially sough t
---for:---T-heybritrg--10a=pound.----Ducks—arei
- their - perfection. When properly stuffed with
thyme, into which is blended a soupcon of
utaijorum, and flanked with peas or liniu
beans, a pair of spring ducks constitutes alikt
a savory and symmetrical dish. They bring
the same price as chickens—adult birds bring
just 10c. a pound less than the juniors.
Fish is in limited supply ; it is also in limited
demand. in weather like that of last week a
stale fish is a very near relation to a fresh
poison. Excepting on Wednesday and Satur
day very little fish is sold. This is the case
notwithstanding the care with Which it is kept
by the dealers in a temperature of not over 45
degrees.
- Woodcock and blackbirds have just come
into season. Retailers in Market sold the
former this morning at $7 60 per dozen; the
latter at a dollar. 'Squab pigeons are a drug
in the market at liOu. each. In a short time
still-hunted venison will begin to arrive. Had
the science of pisciculture been half as welt
studied here as the science of horticulture or
floriculture, we might now be quoting the
price in our markets of speckled trout. We
have but once seen them this season, and then
they were purchased by a restaurateur at a dol
lar each. They averaged not more than six
inches in length.
Jersey watermelons this morning for the
first time showed their inviting ovals. They
retailed for 75c. each. Cantelopes are not
yet in perfection. The, diminutive- variety
earliest maturing is known as the Jenny Lind
You pay for them a dime apiece.
The first lima beans and sweet potatoes
were, this morning, upon the stalls. The
•
price of the former (shelled) was a quar
ter dollar a quart, of the latter a dollar a hall
peck. Counting the number of tubers iu
latter measure, we found them to be just six
" teen. Pennsylvania tomatoes of the higher
grades have ja.t begun to show themselves
They are fully 50 per cent. better than those
from New Jersey. The latter are made up
of skin, seeds and water. The Pennsylvauta
tomato gets its living in a stiffer soil. It i
• solid and comparatively seedless; with it
I . piquant tweak upon your palate the compara
tive insipidity of the JerSe s y tomato will bea ,
no comparkon.
Peaches bring live dollars a basket. The
are far from excellent even at that. New po
tatoes are growing plentiful. Unless mature
they' should" be religiously eschewed. Tit,
Bermuda potato is in its perfection. Until tit,
native attains its growth, people disposed ti.
deal righteously with their digestive apparatu
will do well to "examine the signature on th.
label, and take no other."
For the next four weeks, people to when
marketing is of importance should be up will
the lark.

MENT.—The Fifth Regiment National Guards.
of Maryland, Colonel Jas. , R. Herbert com
manding;which has been encamped at Cape`
May during the past week, broko camp this
morning, and reached this city on the way
home about eleven o'clock. At Market street
wharf the regiment was received by the Se- ,
cond Regiment- National Guards, and a de
tachment of the Eighth Regiment. A
was then formed in the following order:
• Police.
Drum Corps.
Band.
Second Regiment (National Guard), Maj. John
A. Gorgas, Commanding.
Colonel Robert Gray and Staff, Eighth Regi
ment.
- Drum Corps.
Detachment of Eighth Regiment.
Drum Corps.
Band.
Fifth Regitnerit Maryland National Guards,
Col. J. R. Herbert,
The column moved op Market street to
Eighth, to Race,
and thence to Franklin
Square. The streets on the line of march were
pretty well crowded with spectators, and the
excellent marching of the Marylanders drew
forth frequent applause.
In Franklin Square arms were stacked and
then the visitors and escort marched to
National Guards' Hall, on Race street, below
Sixth. In the large hall in the second story a
fine banquet" was served for ,the entertain
ment of the guests. The tables were neatly
arranged and were well supplied with edibles
of every seasonable description. This ban
quet was gotten up by the 'members of the
National Guard, without _ the aid of proles-,
sional caterers, and everything was done in the
most creditable manner.
The 'Committee of Arrangements having
charge of the reception comprised -Major
John A. Gorges, G. Hartung, Jacob Stein,
Wrn. Beirns, J. S. Thorn, Louis Ricketts,
Major D. P. Weaver, Captain C. A. Smith, H.
Ginkenger, Captain C. F. Sauttir, Christian
Gossman and M. Collins.
The military Marched into the hall by com
panies, and were assigned to places at the
tables. When all were in position Lieutenant-
Colonel Barmanus Neff, who is still suffering
from the effects ot his recent sunstroke, made
a neat speech of welcome to the Maryland
Regiment. Major-General Robert - Patterson
presided, and, after a few remarks, heartily
seconding the welcome of Col. Neff, a general
assault was made on the edibles.
After the banquet the men returned . to
Franklin Square, formed in line, and re
sumed the - March for the Baltimore depot.
- -`General Patterson.was complimented .with-a•
marching salute at his residence, Thirteenth
and Locust streets.
Local, CnownEn.—The heat - CA - term has
probably passed. Paper collars to-day feel
correspondingly encouraged. The amount of
sleeping done last night must have been some
thing approximating to the prodigious. The
reign of prickly heat for the present season, we
hope, is safely over.
—As everybody knows; the counsel of three
celebrated civil engineers, Messrs. H:-J., Low--
-baert, _Ed. Miller and Sol. W. Roberts. was so
licited-by the city as to the adoption of plans
for the superstructure of the bridge at Fair
mount, to take the place of the existing pre
carious structure supported upon wire. This
trio of counsellors are magnates in the pro
fession of railroading. Mr. Lombaert is the
well-known Vice President of the Pennsylva-
Ma Railroad. Mr. Roberts is Engineer of the
North Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Miller
was long Engineer of the Pennsylvania Rail
road r but-leftltto construct-the:_Kansas=a.nti
Paciticline. These gentlemen recommended
the plans already printed. in our columns.
Should they be adopted, the citpwill have
bridge the counterpart of- the-one at Steuben
ville, Ohio—a-Midge, pronounced in point of
indestruetibility, beauty and convenience to
be in every respect a model. The recognition
of the city to this trio of experts took 'the
shape, through Councils, of a vote of thanks
for their services to the gentlemen by whom
these services . were so considerately per
formed. Elaborately engrossed upon parch
ment, and enclosed in rich frames, bearing
the seal - of the city,to each gentleman has just
been presented a copy of the resolutions in
question. The testimonials are fitted to take
the shape of heirlooms.

George's P. E. Church in West Philadelphia.
Doctor Mundy personally attended to geeing
everybody comfortable. The liberal notions
of these folks from'St. George's were illus
trated in every detail of arrangement for the
occasion. Not satisfied with one band,, they
took with them two. The idea of expecting
sufficient amount of wind for music for nine-
teen car-loads of people out of a single " band"
was evidently to the managers of this excur
sion an unreasonable expectation. In this
connection we are glad to record that such a
business as the Camden and Atlantic Railroad
is now doing it never did before. Its locomo
tives and its officers are alike badly over
worked. Doctor Mundy, for the first time in
his life, is waning thin.
—The " Carnival" Bal Masque at the Sea
View Excursion House, Atlantic City, comes
off next Wednesday evening. It is in no sense
of the term a catch-penny affair. It was gotten
up in conjunction with prominent citizens or
Philadelphia, by officers of the road. Magnifi
cent music will be present on the occasion.
The dancing-ball will be beautifully decorated.
To give special éclat to the occasion, Doctor
M undy will appear in hymenial costume. The
supper will be in all respects Apiclan'. The
time required by fast train, leaving this city
to-morrow morning and afternoon, to whisk
you to Atlantic City, is little more than two
hours.
—A citizen of Liberia (colored, of course:
passed through this city this morning. He
was accompanied by three daughters. Their
mother is sleeping her last sleep. He was op
his way to Oberlin, - Ohio, to give to his
children that education that qhristendom iii
America denies them elsewhere. Upon him
the heats that so terribly wilt us produced no
effect whatever. Ou the contrary, the 010
gentleman presented all that appearance in
coolness that is realized infitsting the pulp (it

—The niad dog excitement has pretty will
subsided. At this time last year every nu

muzzled dog that passed them are now saving
their ammunition for other purposes.

THE USE or THE Bedford Street-Baths, is in
creasing to a gratifying degree, as the follow
ing figures show. On Wednesday, July 27th,
175 women and 225 girls used the baths; on
Thursday the 28th, 75 men and 212 boys cleaned
themselves at the establishment, and yester-.
day a large number of females availed them
selves of the privilege. These baths are even
more popular than the new free baths on the
Delaware. After cleanliness we may look for
Godliness.
