AT CIIESTEII---DINNER IVITII TWO SONS OF
There was a party of ten or twelve, Mr.

I sat next to the Major, the younger of the

he sang another, " A posie for my ain dear

perhaps; my being an American, gained me
some faVor wilfthim, and he' promised to give
me what lie considered the best engraving of

The. members_of -tbis_dinner.paay were of

- Mr. S— is a friend of Thackeray, and,
speaking of the last number of The Newcomes,

without breaking down,—he mentioned that
Thackeray himself had read it - to James Rus

to have an opportunity to read this last, and

Mr. 5 has a —or I don't know but I ought

of Washington by Stuart, and I was proud to
see that noblest face and figure here in England.

I read the last scene of the "Scarlet Letter"
to my wife, just after writing it,—tried to read
it rather, for my voice swelled and heaved, as

it subsides after a storm. But I was in a very
nervous state then, having gone through a
great diversity of emotion, while writing it, for
many months. I think I have never overcome

to send his works to Dr. _who, belpg,

hurt by that little word " acrid." "He

such a man as I -should have the same
opinion was almost more than he could
bear." .As be spoke, ,he threw
out his arms, sank back in his seat, and I was
really apprehensive of his actual dissolution
into tears. Hereupon I spoke, as was good
