NEW JERSEY NATTERS
16GWTON CEE:.Eli.—For many months past
the road between Camden and Gloucester City
has been in a deplorable condition. The
Turnpike Company refused to repair It, on the
grounds that the tolls collected did not pay
expenses; and the township committee of
Newton could do nothing because the road was
private property.. In this state of affairs it con
tinued until lagt winter, - when the Legislature
abrogated the charter and gave the county con
trol of that public highway. In s ale meantime,
however, the river ethbankment broke and the
tides washed over the road, excavating
deep gullies in its surface, to such
au extent that travel was rendered em
- pliatically dangerous. Thus it' has remained
until the presenttime. The Board of Chosen
:Vreeholders have now taketi the matter in
'and, and Lave resolved to put the road iu
t' °rough repair. The bridge over Newton
eek is to be rebuilt in a strong and sttbstan
:iM manner. It will be three feet higher than
present structurel — one hundred - and - forty --
ni length between the abutinents ; carriage
way nineteen feet wide, and is to be com
;(renced by the first of July. This fact will be
received by the public with . pleasure, because
vehicles are now : obliged to go via Mount
. .P.lphraitn in order ,to reach Gloucester, a dis
tance. of some three - miles out of the Way.
When completed the improvement will l je "
rioCcied public convenience.

Evening Ses4on.—The Convention pro
ceeded to the election of the Standing Com
iniffie. The votYWarStakeiTlirerders, the tellers
being Revs. A. Wadleigh, A. A. Marple and
A. P. Brush, and Messrs. Lemuel Coffin, A.
icketts.and P. Baldy, Jr.
While the ballots were being counted, the
Rev. Mr. Harris read the report of the Com
mittee on the Parochial History of the Diocese.
The Committee bad been placed in possession
of much valuable information, received from a
number of the churches. It was not, however,
embodied in the report.
The report of the Standing Committee was
next received. It sets forth that during the past
year they had recommended twelve persons for
ordination to Priest's.orders ; twelve to Dea
con's orders ; five as candidates to Priest's
orders, and twenty-seven as candidates for
Deacon's orders. The committee had am
proved charters for seven churches.
Rev. Dr. Goodman read the report on the
subject of Christian -education. It sets forth
that reports had been received from 74 parishes
in the Diocese, from which it appeared that in
those parishes there are 1,425 teachers in Sun
day schools, 14,500 pupils; 118 teachers and
pupils in Bible classes ; 23 teachers and
403 pupils in parish schools; 314 teachers and
3,055 pupils in other schools under church
control. The report states that the statistics
are too meagre to give any satisfactory idea
of what thChurch is doing in • the work. It
closed With resolutions recommending in. :
creased effort in the direction of Christian edu
cation, and the establishment of parochial
:..chools where none exist. ,
• The clbsing resolutions Were As follows:
Resotted, That there is no sufficient reason
of duty or of policy to compel this Church to
set herself in antagonism to the system of
mblic schools established by the State for the
nstruction of all the children of the people iu
,he important branches of secular knowledge.
olred, That the Church should welcome,
and it does welcome the system as an invalua
ble aid hi the accomplishment ofa part of the
cork - which would othCrwise devolve upon
per,, and accomplished with vastly greater
horoughness_ and_Mliciency than. with her.
I resent resources she is capable of; she should
and she will heartily co-operate with the sys
tem, endeavoring to infuse and to engraft into
it as much as possible of religious life and
sound religious influence.
When the last two came up, after the unani
mous adoption of the others, the first was
passed with but few negative votes. The
other resolution liev. Dr. l'aret moved to lay
on the table. Upon this vote the yeas and
nays were called, and the motion was lost by a
very large majority, so that when that of the
clerical - delegates had been taken, the sugges
tion was made that the taking of the laity vote
was unnecessary ; but there were general de
mands in all parts of the, house for a vote, and
-- thelist of lay delegates was called. •
The motion to lay on the table being lost,
the resolutiou was again before the Cdriveu
tion, when the Rev. Dr. Rudder'moved that it
he postponed - until reports not likely to give
rise to,dehatehad been.presented.
- The motion to postpone was not agreed to,
and the resolution was then adopted.
The tellers appointed to take the vote on the
election of the Standing Committee reported
that of the clergy,.Rev. Drs. J. Emlen Hare,D.
R. Goodwin; Henry 'J. Morton and M. A. Do
