OUR 11'1.LMINGTON LETTER. Nests and General Items. -‘ [Correspondence 01 the Philadelphia .b.l , ram: Bulletin.] WILSIINGUII`T, May 4.—The old Delaware College, to which the Congressional" ground in aid of agricultural colleges was turned over, will be reopened on the first Wednesday of September next. The Board of Directors will Meet at the College Buildings, in Newark, next Friday week, to elect a President and Faculty for the — reconstructed institution. The build- •ings, which are quite commodious, have been thoroughly repaired and refitted, T and no effort will be spaced to make the College a success. One-.of-the-reostAirecoclous- pieces-of kink on record was practiced on an old lady in this city, last Saturday. Two little .beggar girls, aged, respectiyely, 14 and 10, decoyed a country woman -down• town by -a plausible story, and on the way picked her pocket. They were arrested bythe,.Police, and now nobody know's . whit todUwith them _HoUse_of_Refuge and the May tales to exercise his power to send them to the - Home-for-Friendless Children, fearing their per nicious influence on the other inmates. Last night-Amos residences on West street- were entered' by tineglars, but the inmates being • awakened i the-- -rascals fled with out securing any booty. Quite a number of small-burglaries have been committed lately, and it is believed - that thereis a regularly or ganized gang of thieves here; they are of home Production; too—no ii - carpet-baggers." Iu , the Kent County .Conrti - last week, the , • lored-men-indicted-for-the-m ur-der-o f-1 Thomas Hogan, a. peddler from Philadelphia, were tried. .One.pf them, imined Durnall, was convicted of murder in the first degree, but the other,: mmed WillianiThwber, was acquitted. The man accused of killing his wife was not tried; but was: releakd- on bail.-the-evidence against, him, it is said, only justifying his in dictment for assault and battery, on which charge he will be tried at the next term. The-spring-term-for- this-county--commences Nevdt i Castle next Monday ;- so, of course, Saturday week will. be- whipping-day again. Quite . a m tuber have been whipped fu the loWer Counties this -spriM„,. On Saturday ffie approaching gangs of - track layers on the Wilmington and Reading Rail road were but GI miles apart, and considerable progress has been made this week. The contractor says the road will be completed by the 15th. It will certainly - be opened to Birdsboro, its whole length, some time this month. Wilmington does not come up to the work as well as was expected, in subscribing to the stock of the Wilmington and Western Rail road, but it can scarcely be possible that our business men will let so magnificent an, oppor tunity be neglected long, and the delay can be but temporary. PoliticS continue the absorbing topic. Sena tor Saulsbury4addressed the " White Men," at - Newark, On Saturday evening, but in his efforts to talk conciliatory to the Repub _limns, with a view to__ winning_the_weak kneed, he failed to give the Democracy the strong and highly-seasoned meat its stomach craved, and so the whole affair was rather spiritless. The fact is that the more difference in the color of cuticles LI not a very inspiring topic, and soon becomes exhausted. William was Fober, andAid_his_ lest," but he ceuld not spin it out quite an hour. The " White Men's Party," as distinct from the "Democratic Party," is to be organized at Dover to-morrow. The Democrats frown on it, and its early death is to be looked for. As I havelready told you, it is a mere effort ot' few renegade Republicans, a mere - handful of second-rate politicians, to bring themselves into notoriety. The town election of New Castle took place yesterday, and resulted in a Democratic vic tory by the small majority °Mt, instead of 100 as they expected. The Republicans foolishly failed to organize un til the night before the election; otherwise they might readily, with the aid of the new votes, have carried the election. The Democrats made strenuous efforts to roll up a big majority, as an evidence that the Fifteenth Amendment had strengthened their party. Their failure makes them somewhat gloomy. The Republicans of this State are annoyed by the constant publication of items to the ef fect that prominent colored men propose to canvass the State this fall with a view to aisist ing the Republican party, and that one of the probable results will be the sending of Judge Fisher to the United States Senate in place of Saulsbury. The Republicans of Delaware will run this campaign themselves, with such out side assistance as they invite, and Mr. Fisher stands as good a chance of being elected to the United States Senate from any other State in the Union as be doeS from this ode, of which he has not been a resident for six or eight years. Without an exception every Republican paper in the State scents the idea,-and, every promi „pent Republican of my acquaintance laughs at it, and they think that the Washington'corres pendent of the Philadelphia Press is engaged in rather petty business in this matter. There is no doubt here as to how and why the items are manufactured. . DALE. I know of many instances where large. families have been left not only penniless, but have not - the means or ability of making a livelihood. I can assure you that all the money sent will be spent to aid the deserving. It has given our people the greatest pleasure they nave experienced since the war, the first reel-, zation that we are at least truly brethren of a common country, that the North has so warmly sympathized with .us. in our last and most dreadful affliction, and. God grant that it may bring forth as . the blessing, that we may be connected in a deeper love forour whole laud than-ever before.'2- —Revenue Officer Mackey and others have seized the- rectifying house of McDevitt & Young, at Twelfth and Ogden streets, for al leged irregularities in the manner of conduct ing the business. In default of bail, he was committed to answer. DOGS AND HYDROPHOBIA.-At the last session of the New Jersey Legislature a law -was-passedi-whichrwas-intended-to-protect-citi zens against the dogs that infest every commu nity. The law goes into effect this spring, and taxes every male dog two dollars and each fe male-doe-three- dollars. It makes -the--owner. provide his dog or dogs with a collar, with name and address thereon. It also makes it lawful for any person to kill and bury any dog found running at large without a collar, or known to be unregistered. •So that, in conjunction with 'the ordinance providing for the capture and destruction of dogs in . The .members of- Post No. G:-A. R., it is thought, may yet decide upon Third and Mar ket "streets, as it is believe(' that the City Conn- Cil - will give consent. MILITAIZY.—The different military com panies in Camden are now nearly full, and are composed of men who have seen actual service in the field during the late rebellion. The members have all received their uniforms and equipments, and make a decidedly handsome appearance. These companies are attached to the Fifth Battalion National Guards, which has been organized by virtue of a law passed by the Legislature two years ago. There is likewise a battery of artillery to be raised. LAUNCIIED.-At high water, yesterday after noon, a handsome and substantially-built two masted schooner was launched from the ship yard of D. L. Taylor & Co., at Cooper's Point, ship yard It is designed for the coasting busi ness, and will be rigged out with all the modern improvements in vessel erytdpments,_.Se_veral other vessels are in course of construction at Cooper's Point. SENT TO MOUNT HOLLY.—The man Dilks, charged with stealing a cow near Moorestown, Burlington county, and who was captured in Camden, was yesterday sent to Mt. Holly to_await the -action of the. Grand- Jury of that county. . CIVIL SUITS.—The number of civil suits on the list for trial, besides appeal cases, at the present term of the Camden Quarter Sessions is unusually large. Thirty-one have bean set down. If all are acted on, it will probably , be two weeks before the criminal business is cached.
