—A.t . the Seventh Street Opera House
a first-class minstrel performance will be given
this .evening, Messrs. Duprez 85 Benedict
announce that they will 'close the season in
this city this week for a tour to the North
and West. They will return about September
first.
On Monday next, the Hibernicon, a pano
rama,' representing a tour in Ireland, will -be
exhibited. The engagement of the Peak
Family of . Swiss Bell Ringers has been post
poned.
—The Pilgrim will be exhibited at Concert
Hall every evening during this week, and on
Saturday afternoon. The Centenary M. E.
Church has a benefit to-night.
—Professor Edwin J. "Houston, of. the Cen
tral High School, will deliver a lecture on
" Statical Electricity t " on Thursday evening
next, ,under the auspices of -the Scientific Mi
crocosm. The lecture will be illustrated by
experiments.

evening for the benefit of the Northwest
Boys' Grammar School. The exhibition was a
success in every, particular.
—The First Moravian Church, Franklin

—The citizens of the Tenth Ward favorable
to the nomination of John Price Wetherill- to
represent the Second District in Congress, held
a meeting last evening, at Broad and Race

resolutions were adopted :

by both foreign and domestic capital, and
when an especial aim with the enemies of

Councils, a member of the Board of Trade,and
for fears an active, useful and influential busi
ness man.
Resolved, That such a man in Congress
would be able to bring to the'legislation of the
Republic an amount of experience and practi
cal ability in finance, commerce, industry and
general trade that would be of vast benefit to
our public interests, and of essential good to
our city and State ; and that we, therefore, ask
the citizens of the district to nominate himi . hi

—The Newsboys' Home Association held its
annual meeting yesterday afternoon. The an
nual report shows : N umber furnished lodging,
5,245 ; number of meals, 0,370. During this
period 325 boys were admittted, of which 00
were born in New York, 170 iu Pennsylvania,
22 in New Jersey, 8 in Indiana, 10 in England,
:;(11n Ireland', 20 in Delaware, and 5 in Mary
land ; of these, 03 were able to read
and write. 102 ' were able •to read
only, and 130 unable to read or write.
The average age at which the admissions were
made was 141. 88 of these boys were without
parents ; 113 had fathers but no mothers, and
124 had mothers and no fathers. During the
month of March 10 boys were sent to situa
tious in the country; four of-whom returned to
the city. The home is at present
. provided with accommodation for 52
boys, but could, if necessary, lodge .half
as many more. The school is held
- four nights in the week, and the boys are

—The Northern Libertiesßible Society held
its thirty-eighth anniversary meetinglast even
ing in the Fifth Street Methodist Church. , The
annual report of the: Society was read. Itikated
that the field of labor was a large 'one, era-:
bracing - the - olds district "Of-*Northern•Liberties.
The object of the Society is, the circulation of '
the Scriptures without note or comment., Dur
ing the year two of the managers of the Society
died, Mts. - Rachel Fearing and Mrs. Anna - M.
Reed. - The number of Bibles distributed dur
ing the year was as follows : English Bibles,
35 ; German Bibles, 30; Testaments;4 ; total,
69. Addresses were delivered by Rev. Noah
M. Price, of the Lutheran Church, and Rev. J.
S. Hartley, of the Reformed Church.
—The Trustees of the General Assembly of
the Presbyterian Church in America, held a
meeting yesterday afternoon, at the office of
the Presbyterian Board of Publication. The
report of the Treasurer. was presented,showing
.the receipts from April 1, 1869, to 1870 to have
been $6 , 1,135 01, making together with $14,-
567 .57, the balance in the haiidi oftlie Traa- -
surer last year, the sum of $78,702 68. All
was' expended save the balance on' hand April I
1, amonutiog to $10,952 95. The largest items
of expexidittiie were the " Fund for Disabled
Ministers," $38,579 51, and " Investment of
Permanent funds, $14,600. The Committee on
Finance presented a tabular statement of the
investments:, amounting in the aggregate to the
large sum of 53.
—A pairof horses attached to a carriage took
fright at Passyunk road and Federal streets,
yesterday, and ran off. The - occupants of the
vehicle, John Gates, aged 0 years, residing at
No. 1150 PasiYunk - road, and Frederick Sow
em-dge-d-li years, - living at No.--1151 ,- Passyunk
rod, were thrown out and dangerously in
jured. They were removed to their h3mes.
The team belonged to Mr. James Elliott.
—The Commissioners 'of Fairmount Park
bare passed an ordinance that no person shall
be permitted to bring led horses within
.the
MIMS of the Park, and any persons-who brings
in a borse ITC't Ifarnels - ed - to - va - gotror - mounted
by a rider shall be fined $5 for each offence.
Saunders's lecture on Educa;
tion, last-evening, - at Ceurtland Saunders Col
lege, was well received by a large, intelligent
audience. The lecturer gave full directions
for The. training of children.
. - —Mrs: Coleman, aged fifty years, residing at
No. 139 Race street; was run over" by - a -- mail
- wagorrat - Sixtb -- an --- Cliestnut - streets, and se
verely-injured-abotitthe-arins—and—tbiglisilast
evening. -
JERSEY MATTERS.
CAUGHT.-A man giving his name as that
of Bilks was, yesterday afternoon, arrested on
his way to Camden, by virtue of a telegram re
ceived by Mayor Cox. He was charged -with
having stolen a cow and the committal of
Jmeral7other - depredatiorw -- 11 - e - earriedm - bag
which was found to contain a quantity of cloth
ing and other artielesi-supposed to-have-been
stolen. Mayor Cox gave him a partial hear
ing, and committed him for a further-- investi
gation. The robberies were perpetrated in the
icinity of Moorestown, Burlington county.
There ale many of this class of individuals
strolling about the country, who ought to be in
the penitentiary. They go about ostensibly on
the plea of traveling from one point to another,
and asking alms from door to door, and then
rob wherever and whenever an opportunity

men who were arrested in Camden a few
weeks ago, charged with committing robberies
at Medford, have been found guilty by the
Mount Jlolly Courts and sentenced to four
years' imprisonment in the Penitentiary at
Trenton. They were rough-looking and very
badly behaved men, whose conduct was very
much against them.
TEMPERAIsICE. To-morrow evening the
friends of the temperance cause in Camden
will hold a large meeting in the First Presby
terian Church for the purpose of advancing its
principles. Several milinent speakers will be
present. Strenuous efforts are making to se
cure the passage by the next Legislature of an
act submitting the question of license or no li
cense-to-a-direct-vote of; the peopled and it is
thought such an effort will be successful.

napes was, yesterday,committed by Mayor Cox
on a complaint entered against him charging

dividuals under false pretendes. te will be
tried during the present term of the Camden
Courts.
ATLANTIC CiTy.—Another of those popular
concerts given by the principals, assistants and
pupils of the public schools will come off on
Friday. evening • next, for the, ‘ benefit of - the
schools. These entertainments are decidedly
interesting.
