believes it to be expedient to commence build 7

that the cost of erecting the designed wing will

—Two men, named Michael Hatton and
Charles Small. were arrested yesterday after
noon, in Camden, and taken before Mayor
Cox,on a very serious charge. It appears that
early the evening before a Mr. Richard Clark
was accosted by a gang of men nelyr the
cricket grounds, in' Middie Ward, knhcked
down, and robbed of his watch and chain and
some money. Mr. Clark complained of 'the
defendants as having been concerned in the
outrage ; hence their arrest. Upon a careful
examination into the circumstances. the Napr
deemed the evidence. sufficient to send the
matter to court, and the two men were com
mitted to answer. The outrage was a bold
one, and if the parties are found guilty, they
will, most probably, receive a' pretty severe
punishment, as the officers of the law are de
termined to deal vigorously with the perpetra
tors of Such crimes.
A NEW YORK SCANDAL.
Commotion Urn Methodist Church—the
Pastor Elopes with a Sister.
The report which ha become current
announcing the elopement
. of prominent
Clergythan of this city with a young lady Or hi's
congregation, has created sad consternatina
among a large and influential religious de-
Immination. The _diets briefly detailed ,are
these , •
The Rev. Horace. Cook, who has, until his
sudden ,departure, been presiding over the
Seventh Street Methodist 'Episcopal Church,
became enamored of a
.young lady of his
church, and alter paying'conSiderable attention
to ber, which was scarcely compatible with his
position as a clergyman, or consistent with his
relations as a husband. and falter, he left his
Dome, and meeting the young lady by appoint-
Merit concluded .hot to trsteamer,•and sailed
for Europe.
The young lady is but lt; years of age, and
is of a simple and confiding nature, untutored
in the ways of the world, and reared by a pious
and cultured family. Ber mine is Miss 'John
son, and she was a pupil in Twelfth Street
School. She had often expressed her admira
t ion for her minister, Mr. Cook, in her natur
ally artless manner, but no :one imagined that
there had been impropriety in their intercourse.
Mr. Cook bad been very attentive to her, but his
manner is very suave and his nature social',
and his fondness for young people conspicuous;
so that any particular interest which he
showed for Miss Johnson's society did not
awaken suspicion,
it now appears that he was accustomed to
meet this young lady in the afternoon as she
came from schoOl, and to walk with her, This
was not known to the parents. .There Were
reports about Mr. Cook's attentions to. Miss
Johnson being very, iinPrOper, and theniother
of the young lady hearing them, reproved her
ror TerMitting Mr. 'Cook to indulge in so
Marked attention. While ,Mr. Cook was in
Europe during last summer she was in frequent
interchange of letters,
and it is said,they" were
somewhat questionable. She was at the
steamer when he left on his summer voyage,
and handed him a slip of paper with these
words inside, "May God grant you a pleasant
trip and bring you back in safety to us."
Other scraps which were :handed him by the
young lady showed that she had
_no impure
thoughts r and that her love to him was by no
means passional.
Since the pastor's return, Mr. Johnson has
been carefully watching the movements of the
minister and daughter, and had determined to
cowhide the clergyman if he met him in com
pany with his (laughter. But since Kr..obok's
return he has not been discovered in his clan
destine meetings, although they haie been
many.
on Thursday evening last le obtained Con
siderable money•from his friends, and packed
a trunk and made readiness for his journey.
On : Friday afternoon he met Miss Johnson as
he came from school, and with her books and
in her school dress he pled her away. lice

the Pleasantville district, and ,amounted to

by the use of powerful pumping apparatus,

Oil Creek the falling oil was general, and on
the territory in the vicinity of Charley and

considerable decrease, and on Church run and
in the Pithole and Bean farm districts, as well
as in the West Hickory district, the daily pro

In but two districts—on Upper Cherry Run
