We hive from the 'Mew York World, an
organ of 'the party of which Mr: (*)rge
Mountjoy was a -prominent and active;mem=
tier, a chapter in the biography of that emi
nent convict. The Woad says that Mr.
Mountjoy maided at one time. in New York
city (a most excellent place for breeding vil
lains), but that lie changed his base to Canada
suddenly, one day, after robbing the treasury
of*2o,ooovr $30,000. It was not the singu
huity 9f the crime that compelled flight, for,
.Mr.Mountjoy merely imitated the common
example of men who have stolen equally ,
large sums and • yet telt no dread
of the vengeance of the law. But
Mr, Mountjoy's method was less ingenious
than that of other scoundrels, and as New
York justice vindicates itself only when it's
insulter is a fool, ,he was compelled to place
himself beyond it's reach. When his crime
had been forgotten be came to Philadelphia
and embarked his stolen eapital in sundry un
lawful and , absurd enterprises. Ills subse
quent career and his well t deserved fate. are
known. We give additiOnal publicity to '

J_NotasneoLis; Dec; 30.—The Washington
correspondent of the Gazette intimates that
Senator Pratt has bad no intention of re6igit
ing • his seat. in the Senate. The facts are
those:.Senator Pratt has been dissatisfled
with his position for sonic time, and almost a
wech, levee assured his colleague, Senator
Morton, that he would, place his resignation
in ttre bands of GoVernor Baker within the
next week. Senator 3Lorton eadeavored to
die made bier irons doing so until the fact be-
Mare generally known to the leading politi
cians throughout the State. when Mr. Con-
ner, the Chairman of the State Central Com
mitte, received a number pf letters urging him
to!' telegraph Senator Pratt to withhold his
resighaticin for thepresent. This Mr. Conner
nail _Senator kratt --assured Mr.-Connerif. his resignation was likely to cause any
trouble or.any embarrassment to the party, he
would withhold it for the present.
The assertion of t he Lafayette correspondent
of the Gazette, that Covenwr. Baker was in
relined to •appoint the Hon. G. S. Orth; of
Lafayette, is an error, as Governor Baker has
been absent from the city several days, and /33/
knew nothing of Senator Pratt's!intpation to
reign until his. return honse last sight. Re
has not Intimated to tiny one whom he would Stern

that is :he would uothave appointed any one Brig
