'the Drought and the Crops. y The Department of Agriculture furnisbes a summary .of the crop reports. A statement is givem•showing the mean temperature and rain fall of the several States for July and August, as-contrasted with those months last year. The region Most subject to drought, that west of the Mississippi and Missouri, has had the most regular supply of rain, and the valley of the former has had an abundant rain-fall to its mouth ; while Alabama and Georgia have suffered from drought, and the ,Atlantic States in a still higher degree, not only throughout the tidewater region, but in a large portion of the Eastern States. • On the Southern Atlantic seaboard the heat has been greater this year than in 186 S, and the rain-hill less. N iirth and east of New York, the heat has been less, as also the rain fall. In'one case it IVas too hot, in the other too cold , for corn and other summer crops, which suffered' accordingly. While the drought has prevailed east of the Alleghenies, the great Mis.tssippi basin has had an and' amount of rain. West Virginia and Ohio alone, of the central area, had less rain-fall in Aul:rust than in 1808. The excessive moisture of the summer is sustained to its close, especially in Wisconsin, Minnesota, lowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Mis souri. .Both the early and the later rains have 'been somewhat extraordinary west of the Mis souri, yet the high tempegature and deep thirsty -• soils of that region have converted the visita tion into a blessing. The drought of - lbe sea _board bas not beerrequaled in many years. The colnparison between this year and last shows that New England has had but one-third as much rain in August of the present year; Sew York a little more than one-half; New Jersey scarcely one-eighth ; Pennsylvania ' one sixth, and Maryland one-ninth. Extracts from correspondence will show the injurious effects of this excessive drought on corn, cotton and garden vegetables. . • Corn.—The corn crop has been the prey of ' numerous ills in every section of the country. The only States that now show an average con dition are Nebraska., Kansas, Florida, Louisi ana Texas'and'Arkansas. 'COttori. 7 4Tbere . will be a reduction in the Alabama, and a Material increase. from MiSsissippl to Texas, • Georgiai: lot•ida uid`Sbiith Carolina have suffered most, mainly; rom drought, and in a feu localities froni rust, the eaterpillaritul boll Worin. The probabilities at present favor ,a•:sleld of two millions seven hundred. and fifty thoUsand bales. . ' ' 'lieut.—This crop,as a whole, is large. The only States showing a deerease are ,Thinois, Michigan, lowa and California: Some of .it is inferior in quality, but a considerable portion has been injured by rains after harvest; - but a conshierable•portion of the Western Wheat is of good quality, and that of the South' is de eidedlysuPsrlor. . , Fruits, as a rule : have yielded abundantly, -"pies in a jegs degree tha , i other .Shacks. THE COUNTY CONVENTION.—The Repub lican Convention for Camden County, on the :iOth inst., will be one of the most imposing and interesting ever held in Camden city; and, from indications which are everywhere ob serVed, there is no doubt but that, it will be the most unanimous. The delegates in all, the townships have been elected, and it is ascer tained that out of the whole seventy who will compose the Convention, the Hon. Ed ward Bettie will receive all but two, and it is posSible every one. Mr. Bettie has represented. Camden county in the State Senate for the past three years with an ability the county never before has bad in :bat body. Ile was the only. Republican member who successfully "bearded the lion" vf Democracy in that den. Considering • the fact that the patty he represents has laeen in the minority in the Senate ever since he be t ante a member, Mr. Bettie' has accomplished that, which was highly connnendible to the interests of the . county and cred itable to himself. His 'closely . reasoned, eloquent, deeply logical and graceful. speeches elicited the applauSe and appreciation of even Lis bitterest opponents in politics, and thereby seated a State and national sentiment which no other speeches in the Senate were able to do. Mr. Bettie directs all his vigorous and active energies towards the advancement of the _party whose pritibiples he so zealously cherishes and the patriotism of which he feels to be conservative of the highest future im r portance to the country. The renomina- I ion of such a man will, therefore, be but agrate ful acknowledgment of the eminent service he I-as already rendered to the nation, the State and the party, and his nomination is tanta mount to his election, by a handsomely in creased majority. In fact, Camden county would be derelict in duty if it. alloWed him to' he defeated 'tinder any contingency whatever. His le-election will be a credit to the -County, and an expression of sentiment truly Republi can in all its essential characteristics. ALLEGED DE;3EIiTION CASs,.—Before Jus tices Joram and Cassady, yesterday, a man named Cox was arraigned on the .charge of having deserted his family; who were residing at the time hi Boston. 'Mrs. Cox obtained in formation - of -Ids---whereabOuts, came-to-Cam den, and had him arrested, with a view to 'compel him to furnish a suitable 'support. Both parties were ably represented by counsel, who -argued the 'case in the most able manner. But the evidence.appe4ed to be so plain and pointed that the' jury to which the case had been submitted gave a Verdict in her favor without leaving their seats. The justices then ordered him to give security ,for the .payment of $7 50 per.week to his wife until the October term of the 'Court,' to which hb was held in $3OO to answer. : Kivx Loss.—By the 'Turning of the barn of Mr. Joseph Browning, near , Haddonfield, a few, days_ ago, that gentleman- lest , very, bushels of wheat, which had 'jail, been - , thresh ed, a large amount of hay, and , algo haths and iltticles of household - had been placed there, all of which were con- sumed. ' Thin' -tair is dila ened, falling hair checked, and bald ness , often, though not always, cured by its uhe. '' Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or - the glands atrophied and decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this t applicatidn. Instead of fouling the hair with "a' Pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make sortie preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but .not .harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else caii be found so desirable.
