Xixszsx Arm -Sitox.—DaSt "evening,
about half past seven O'clock-40bn Sharkey
and Jame& Crawford got into atght in Mar
tin's tavern; on Frankford road; r abOys, Norris
street: , That difficulty was ', , atrauged, ap p.
rently, amicably, and the two went together to
a tavern at Front street andColumblaarertue.
There the quarrel seems tohavebeen renewed,
and the parties got to blows. ,
,Sharkey, it is
mid, Ibit a. large piece out of the upper lip of
Crawford. He then went out'into the street
'andlist4 met by Pbliceumn - Gillespie, who ac
companied him to Frontstreet, 'below Oxford;
wheriSharkey said that he would go home. He, .
however, went to , a - house on Howard street,'
below Oxford; where he sat on the frontsteps
in •company with several persons, among
whom were some children. About tono'elock,
William Crawford, Constable of the Nine
teenth Ward, and George Crawford (brothers
bfJames), and another man, came along, and,
without saying anything, cominenced beating
Sharkey on the head with a black-jack.
Sharkey managed to get away, and ran up
Howara.street to the . tavern. of, illiam Bar
ker, which he entered and .passed through
into, the yard. William. Crawford, it is al
leged, followed .him in ~the lard, fired upon
him, the ball taking effect in the hip. Craw
ford, then ran away. It is claimed, on his
part, that he had a warrant for. the arrest of
Sharkey, issued by Ald. Sinex, upon the .oath
of James Crawford. Sharkey was conveyed
to St; Maxy's •Hospital, Fraukford, road and
,Palmer , street. ' He has three' severe.outs
the head, in addition te the wound in the hip.
He was doing Well this morning, but the phy
sician would not certify that he was' out •of
danger. • f' ,
Sergehnt'llelss and two of the Tenth District
Policemen went to the house of George Craw
ford, on Trenton avenue, below-Wood street,
about one o'clock this morningc Crawford
looked out of the window and said that' he
would come down. He got but of-a' bank win
dow onto a shed, from which he;reached the
ground, and then went into , the next house,
where helm captured.- He was , locked up to
await ahearing at the Central Station. Wil
liam Crawford surrendered •himself into the
custody, of Alderman Heins, about four o'clock
this morning, and was comrinttedfor a further
bearing. .
STEAM YAcirrs.—The business men
along Delaware avenue are discussing the pro
priety of subscribing voluntarily to a fund for
the building of one or two powerful steam
yachts, to be used.in time of conflagrations on
that or other thoroughfares in close proximity
thereto. At the recent burning of the Tatter
,son Block a large number of the steam tire
engines drew their supply of water from the
river Delaware. The scene during the height
of the conflagration was onethat will never be
forgotten by the spectators. The incessant
streams, drawn from an inexhanstable supply
afforded by the river, were absolutely necessary
to, keep the fire within certain limits. It was
a tremendous battle between fire and.water,
much of the latter being sent back in scalding
sprays 'upon the firemen. It is not probable
that such a disastrous conflagration will ooeur
again ; but extensive fires may occur at almost
any time, at which steam tire yachts might
render the most °Mei ent service. The subject,
however,is one of deep interet3t,and the proba
bility is that the desired object : will be accom
plished, either by private subscriptions
or public , outlay. ft is possible that
the project, will be forinally brought
to the notice of the city authorities in a short
time, perhaps. at a special meeting of the
'Councils to be called in a few days. Shortly
after the consolidation of the city the subject
was tartly considered by the authorities ; but
in the midst of other and perhaps more, emer
gent business it was finally forgotten. Now,
since the
. greatest fire of the period, the im
portance of establishing on the river front
steam yachts for, fire purposes has become
more apparent, and with the combined effort
of the mercantile community and the coned
, tuted authorities of the city,, they are likely
to be added to the institutions of, progressive
Philadelphia. At the, fire,of the 'Patterson
Block, the burning whisky' an into'the Dela
ware, and the river for some distance seemed
to be on fire, Several vessels • were in danger,
and would have ignited had it 'not • been for a
private- steanitog. that towed them to places
of, safety. The Mercantile Marine :Fire De
partmpni, under prpper regulations, will be a
great acquisition, and Philadelphia, can lay
claim to being the first city introducing it if
the authorities favor the undertaking; if • not.
thanthe honor will belong to its merchants..
Tux EcrArs•E.—Prof. Morton's/Eclip.se-pho
togralipi c loa . rty arrived to-day by . thelo o'clock
train, in their special car, bringing with them
a set . of, negatives of the eclipse, which, for
• erfection and extent,is undoubtedly unrivaled
by any other work of the kind produced at
this time or formerly. "While in Chicago they
•
had opportunity of comparing results with
several other-parties,' and it would appear that
none then accessib!e w approached in perfection
to thoSe of the lelphia expedition.
The scientific honor or our city has been
entrusted to good hands, and there can be no
doubt thatthe various members of the party
have well merited.the liberal aid which they
have received from our various railroad com
panies on their route, and - the - ligh - commend=
