■■ MormonTrenblM. ' " fFriOT tbo, Utah Daily Beporter.J • r-- '* ■ A,few days ago to mentioned tUD fact that •V William Alexander and P a jrtd:Hyriim, the ■ voungcrbops of Joseph, Smith,_the Mormon Prophet, were on their way to Salt Lake City, to set up the standard of tho reorganizodor anti-polygamy church. A singular interest attaches to the name of Dayid Hyrum. A few months before Joseph’s deathho-statod that “the man was not bom who was to lead this people: but of Emma Smith should: be born a son who would succeed in the presidency after a .season- or. diatob ance” Joseph Smith was hilled Juno . 27th,' 1844, and tho son, named from his father’s direction David Hyrurn , was born at. the Mansion House in Nauvoo on the 17th of the succeeding November.))-This prophecy, is secretly dear to thousands of Mormons who arewearyof the tyranny of Brigham Young and yetl?oldtotheirfaith in Joseph Smith. A few days ago tho young men reached Sait , Bake City and soon called upon Brigham Young and announced their intention Id or ganize their church at once, asWngpermission to defend their faith in the Tabernacle, proposing to argue with the Brighamites from »the original Mormon books. . . ? i Wo have but scant reports of the interview, but it is said to have been very warm. Bng ham was very angry at their presumption, and denied them the use of the Tabernacle, send ing word at tho same time to the Bishops to shut them out of the waTd meeting houses. The brothers,at one point of the conversation,' denied that their father ever practiced po lvgamy, citing their mother’s testimony, <*© which' Brigham retorted that their mother “was a liar and had bfecn proven a thief,” with much more of the sort., Be ’it remem bered that the lady thus spoken of is the Electa Ctiria, or “Elect Lady of God,” In Mormon tlieologv, who was the glory of their early history. , Like Pope Eagan, of the Pilgrim’s Progress, Brigham doubt less gnaws his nails in'vain rage that lie can not, as in former times, let loose the ven geance of his Nauvoo Legion upon these sec tarians and crush the rebellion in blood. -If his power were now equal to: his feelings, we should have repeated the story of the. Morris ites, when a High civil, functionary of Utah : led the legion in broad day to slaughter, men and women who had surrendered themselves prisoners. But nothing more than petty nerv ' seeutions will be attempted at this late day, and we earnestly hope the young men will succeed in their enterprise. Of their religious principles as opposed to Brighamism we know but little, but recognize iu them tolerant : men, good citizens and loyal subjects of the ‘United States. ' . ■ “Lying Joe.” A correspondent of the Boston Advertiser, writing from Long Lake, Me., says: _ As the outlet, of this lake is reached, on. the right hand of the passage may he seen the small and thriving settlement known as “In dian Village,” where a number of the mem bers of the Passamaquoddy tribe reside, and the well-built houses aud cultivated gardens adjoining them are evidences of the advancing ■civilization of tlieir race. A church and school house crown the summit of the hill, giving an additional air of improvement to the place. . ' This settlement is the home of. “Lying Joe ” i an Indian who serves often as a guide, and of whom much that is related will bear -repeti tion. The title was conferred upon him long ago, - because of tlie Hinguiarpreferencehegave to falsehood instead ot trulh. * His extreme lovu for that which while .it cheers also inebriates, led him op 9 ne bcear sion in midwinter to gain.in the night time an underground entrance to 'the floor, of the railway station at Princeton, and boring through "the floor of thefreigbt department he also bored at tho same time intentionally and as'he had planned, into a'., barrel of clear whisky which was temporarily stored there. Having thus gained access to it, he held a wooden pail at the aperture until it was fllled with the coveted prize; then departing by the way he came, ami pushing up the lake, he hid the confiscated liquor in a sno,w drift. The discovery of" the theft • was soon made, and not long /after sus picion resting upon the right party (part of tlie lost “Bourbon” having been dis covered), Joe 'was arrested and held for trial. On being asked to obtain counsel, liis only re ply was: “Me i>lead*m my own case,” and ’when the Court came inj true for onceat least • to. what-he had said, Joe appeared not only as ‘ the prisoner at the bar but also as the counsel for the defence. Tho chances seemed against him, as a swift witness-in the centre of the /room appeaved. the wooden .pail naif full of ‘ the stolen whisky.,'and against such testimony the plea of innocence, as all supposed, could not be sustained. When the opportunity to be heard had come, Joe arose, and with a look of magnificent scorm pointing to the half filled pail, he inquired of the Judge: “ What vou call um V” “That,” was the reply,! ‘ is the whisky-which was stolen.” • ~ “ No,” said Joe, “ that’s not it. What you call ' nm in law—pail and whisky ?” “Call them?” said the judgeproperty, Joe, property; and you are held, charged with stealing that property.” “ Then,” said Joe, “ you no hold me; law -says whisky no property; so mb no steal um- Tais iyas a point in itlie'trial not looked for, but nevertheless a valid one, for by the State law whisky was not acknowledged valuable or - merchandise. . “True, Joe” said the judge,“whisky is not' property, but ,the pail containing the whisky, that is property.” ■ “Yes, said the Indian, still fllled with cqn ’ fldence of success; “that is right; but hie no steal nm that—me borrowed pail from Kobe's store,” —mentioned the name of the owner of one of the principal stores in the village—and .so Jpe was released from custody. '—A good ioke is told of a young man who attended a social circle, a few evenings since. The conversation turned on California and getting rich. Tom remarked that if ho was in California he would, instead of work ing in the mines, waylay some rich man who haci. a hag full of gold, knock out his brains, gather un the gold and .skedaddle. One of the young ladies quietly rexiliedthat he had better gather up the hraius, as h© evidently stood in more need of that article than gold. Tom subsided. —" CITY JNOTICES. Klimt’s China Hall.
