Ott) flomn.—Aii • institution
Whieli,.frout the most modest beginning has,
•!.• attained: a position of emisiilerable importabev
hiliOng our publie eharities, will have its
feurth anniversary on Thursday evening, Jtute
Mb, at eight (i'elock, at the Baptist Church,:
.N. W. corner Broad and Arch streets. Among
the distifignished speakers who Will make MU
, dresses on this occasion are
Per. Brooks z 'Bev. Dr. Willits,
mid others. It is surprising how much may
he arromplished by earnest, persistent en
deavor. The idea of establishing a re
treat for old men,who are supposed tote even
more helpless than women—at least more in
- capable of making themselves welcome in a
flimily by attending to trifling domestic duties
:---originated with some Young ladles while
they were - visitinr , the Widows' House
in this city. A quick sense of
justice suggested the question, "And why not
secure a home for old and feeble men?" The
idea of an association for the relief of, super
; amituded or bankrupt Merchants had .pre-;
viously been conceived and nobly carried out.
It had enlisted the eftbrts and sympathies, and
had received the liberal contributions of a
large number of the merehants of our good
city, but its benefits are restricted to retired
?Pei-Maids, only. Of COMM!, there are many
'others equally deserving, 'equally respectable,
and no less needy; whose misfortunes appeal
as strongly to the benevolent. Ifni these the
oOld idan's Home" was established: • The
building now occupied, on Arch Street, near
Thirty-ninth, is far too small for the accommo
dation of the numerous applicanta for admis
sion- The managers are,Therefore, compelled
to cloSe their doors against many persons who
are in every way proper subjects for the care
and shelter of the "Home. The managers
earnestly desire to obtain a sufficient amount
of money to enable them to erect a larger
building. We hope that our readers, both old
and young, will attend this anniversary, if
only to hear from earliest and thoughtful men
their opinion of the merits of so excelleid aLn
institution.
Bums AND Wonms.—A day or two since a
flock of cedar birds, 'thanbering several hun
dred, alighted on the trees on Moyamensing
avenue, below. the Wharton Market, and at
Once commenced 'onslaught upon the worms.
A number of boys comthencedthrowing stones
at the birds, and all of them flew away. - Many
of them returned in a short, time, and being
left unmolested,-speedily cleansed the trees of
the obnoxious worms
• A similar scene - took 'place several years
since among the trees in front of Independ
ence Hall. Five or six hundred coder birds
suddenly settled there, and in less than ten
minutes Scarcely a worm was to be seen. The
trees thus visited were scarcely affected by the
intolerable worm nuisance during the sum
mer.
From the 2Oth to the last of the present
month, the "white millers" or butterflies will
ea
app r' by the myriads, and if something could
be adopted to destrey them before they lay
their eggs, the great probability is that in the
summer of next year the trees would be com
paratively clear of worms.
THE lEtninoEs °vita GUNNER'S Rim—
several weeks ago Mayor Fox called the
attention of City Councils to the dilapidated
'condition of the bridges over Gunner's Rini.
There are nineteen of these bridges and all are
badly in need of repairS. Within the past two
years seventeen persons have lost their lives
'by falling from these bridges. The one at
'Clearfield street is in the most dangerous cou
dition. At night it is scarcely possible for a
carriage to cross the structure without beinu
overturned down an embankment. The Mayor
has directed the police to get tools and lumber
and lix up the bridge so as to make it passable.
hirenovintENTs. ! —The t improvements at
Fairmount Water Works, commenced some
time since, are progressing slowly, Ind with
as much speed as insures Safety and substan
tial Work. A large part of the old wheel
house has been removed, and the foundation
prepared for other wheels. One the im
mense mains which supplies the basin is al
,ready iu place, and another in tin of the sang .
size is being laid alongside of it. These large
pipes extend across the fore-bay or basin. Tie'
old path Way or line of travel along the brick
pavement in front of the old wheel-house, has
been entirely curt Off. A temporarY luidge has
been erected, so that the communication l'or
the benefit of the public may b preierv,d,
PLEASANT IN PEO VEMENTS.—The police of
the Eleventh District have det4rm, lied to
make their Station Bouse - a sort of urural re
treat. They have collected timber, &c., and at
their own expense have put up an arbor and
other improVements which it would have cost
the city $2OO . to accomplish. James Ritchie,
member of Select Council from the Nineteenth
Ward, has contributed KA) worth of flowers,
and other citizens have also contributed
flowers and other articles for the I !mbellish
molt of the garden in front of the Station
House.
