'fhdnesiltns for the new bnildlng, head gates, miifink' flume, suspended main, and complete of the work, are by Chief Engineer Graeff, whose long experience and scientific at tainments, cannot be too highly prized by the m>6Dleof Philadelphia. P The capacity of the new turbine is abont 8,00n,- 000 gallons per' day. and the. whole pumping rapacity of the works at presea*, is about 31,000,- dOO gallons per day. . When the series of turbines now contemplated are all completed (and Conn cils cannot complete' them, a day too soon). Philadelphia will have capacity for a supply ot water sufficient for its necessities for generations miff-houses, with their superb m a chinery, will BOofftorin one ef tho chief attrac tions of and Falrmoant, with all its pictarisque' improvements, will be a greater source of pride than ever to onr peopkr The whole work on the miU-hou6eß has been done in the most substantial manner, with cut-stone walls, and roof 6? wrought-iron girders, with mterme diate brick arches, supported upon wronght-lron columns. The bnildinge when completed, will be fire-Drool, enduring, and suitable for a work oi the importance and magnitude required for the supply ofwater to this great city. Th« introduction of the JouvaJ Turbine In place of the cumbrous old breast- wheels arFalroiuuut, has proved an Immense economy of power and of money. The first turbine was put in, eighteen years ago, and has run from that time to this at a cost fbr ordinary repairs for tne whole lime, kindred dollars ! Daring last summer, this wheel ran for three months «;«*•>»' stopping three minutes! No better test of the ex cellence of this admirable invention, or of the perfect way in which the contractor his done his work, could well be afforded than this. The saving of water by these wheels is very great. The old breast-wheei expended thlrtv three gallons of water ln pumping one gallon iDto the reservoirs. The Jouval turbines now in operation con6Hme about eight gallons In rais ing one. When the breast of the dam is raised two feet, as must eventually bo done to save the present great waste of water, the additional fall will enable the tnrbines to do their work at an expense of only shout five gallons to one. The inspection yesterday was highly satisfac tory in every Tespect, aod much credit is due to all the establishments which have been engaged in furnishing the work for this great improve ment It has been executed by different parlies, under Mr. Geyelin’s cod tract. The pumps, con necting rods, Arc., are from the shop of I. P- Morris & Co. The gearing and shafting from the Weet Engine Company, of Norristown. Tb<- turbine wheel and its Rate hoisl from the shop of Mr Geyelln. The wrought iron llumo ami lore bay head-gateß were not comprised in the con tract, and were made for the department by Messrs. Hunswortb & Nivlnr. Buildings Found oven. — A par 1 , ol the duty of policemen on duty at night is to examine the doors of stores and dwellings to ascertain if any of them have been left unftusioned.
