"Taken as n whole. THE .UNION PACIFIC RAIL

WELL SELECTED. The energy and perseverance with
which the work has been urged forward. and the rapidity
with which it has been executed are withoutparallel in

has never been •equaled." The report concludes by
eaj ing that "the country has reason to congratulate itself
that this great work of national importance is so rapidly
approaching completion under such favorable auspices."
'1 be Company now have in use 187 locomotives and nearlY
2,000 cam of all; deacriptiono. A large additional equip

se nearly completed, and ties distributed for 120 miles in
advance of the western end of the track. Fully 120 ailles
of iron for new track are now delivered west of the Mis
souri River, and 90 miles more are en route. The total
expenditure for construction purposes in advance of the
completed portion of the road is not lees than eight million
dollars.
Resides a donation from the Government of 12.100 acres
of land per mile, the Company is entitled to a subsidy in
0. bonds on ita line as completed and accepted, at the
average rate of about 829.000 per mile, according to the
difficulties encountered, for which the Government takes
a second lien as security. The Company have already
received $24,078.300 of this subsidy, being in full on the

oinmissioners.
Government Aid—Secarii y of the Bondi
By its charter, the Company is permitted to issue Its
own FIRST gORTGAGE 1l i Ds to the same amount as
the Government hoods, and ne more. These Rands are
a First Mortgage upon the whole road and all its cc/Mo

States, takes the highest rank as it safe security.
The earnings from the way or local business for the year
c oding June 30 . . lift, on an average of 472 miles. were
over FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. which, after paying
all expenses, were much more than sufficient to cover all
interest liability upon that distance, end the earnings for
be last five months have been SUSehfrie. They would
:lava been greater, if the road had not boon taxed to its

the China freights, and the supplies for the new
Rocky Mountain States and Territories must
be ample for all interest and other liabilities.
No political Action can.reduce the rate of interest.
It must remain for thirty years—sir per erne. per annum

The fire was one of the most extensive and

Sears, the beat being so intense that oven the
marble cornice was almost obliterated.
We had, as yon ate aware, two of your valu

well-known reputation as manufacturers of
FIREPROOF SAFES, if any further proof had
been rtqulzed.
They were xubjected to the most interte4l hest,
and it affords us much pleasure to infoini you
that after recovering 'them from the ruins, we
found upon examination that our books, papers,

We bad one of your PATENT CHAMPION

we are happy to say it proved itself worthy of
our recommendation. Our books and papers
were all preserved. We cheerfully tender oar

giving the HERRING SAFE the credit and confi

Yours, very respectfully,
