Sebecquently a third school was established. In O(tober, 1791, a committee of this society peti Honed the Legislature to establish free schools . The petition set forth "that the proper educa tion of youth is an object of the first importance, particularly in free countries, as the surest pre servative of the virtue, liberty and happiness of the pcdple. l7 bat the salutary - effects of Sunday schools in this city have furnished evidence, that schools established at the public expense are the most t ffeetual an me of diffusing the blessings of Illu mination among the mass of the people; ana prayed that the Legislature would make provi sion by law for their support. The schoOls established by this society were continued until 1815, when they began greatly to decline, because a number of yourg men and women had opened similar Achools. In 1819 the last school was dosed, and from that time to the present the funds of the society have been used in assisting poor and needy Sunday schools in the city to procure books. Every application made is referred to a visiting committee before an eppropriatton is made. A steamer has arrived at .Santiago de Cuba with important news.. , According to the despatehts , received by the government, Villa Cobre has been retaken by the Spanish troops. Official accounts also represent that Valmaseda defeated the rebels at Sibarrion,'Csiscoro , and On ninnies. He then marched into T.anas arid' effected a junction with , the forces of Colonel Lone. The united forcetehad commenced to advande on Bay ern°. A report from • Manzanillo declares that Valmasedo has actually captured Bayern°. It is also reported that the revolutionary chief tains, Lespedesand Aguilera,,were in the vicinity of Manzanillo, and had offered to surrender to Valmaseda, on condition that their present rank in the Spanish army be guaranteed them. This account is discredited as incompatible with the reported character of the men, and it is dtemed Improbable that their companions would permit such action. The official re ports of affairs in the interior are flatly contra dicted by the advices privately received by friends of the insurgents in this city. It is denied that Valmaseda has captured Bayern°. It is maintained, on the contrary, that he has been defeated, with the loss of many men, and the loss of his artillery and baggage train.
