desired to become betier acquainted with the
workings of the office, and but few persons were
admitted to his presence during the morning.
The efficers of the Detective force were taken

We, and were introduced to the Mayor. He
addressed them a few words,saylug that he hoped
to have their co•operation to enable him to sac
c.ssfully administe r ihe affairs of the city.
LA COTERIE CA, A/VAL.—The 11 th of January,
the time fixed for La Coterie Carnival at the
Academy of Music, Is near at hand, and thou
s ands of persons who have thronged that spacious
edifice RS SDI ciatorA of or participants in the bit
masque in former yeais, are anticipating much
pleasure at the coining testival. Messrs. Abel and
Risley, the Directors, are determined that
the ball of this yea y shall not ail
in comparison wi h the others they
have so successfully conducted. The suhscribers'
list IS filling up rapidly, and every indication
points to a great triumph in the interest of
amusements.
The success with which these gentlemen have
met, yearly since their first enterprise: is well
dew me, and the future promises them an abun
dant Larvest of rewards. They have expended
largo sums of money in preparations for the ap
proaching ft stival, and there is no doubt that the
Academy will be completely filled with their
friends on the night of the 11th lust.

has been chosen Lieutenant-Colonel of the First
giment of the Gray Reserves, in place of J. W.
Latta. promoted to the Coloneley. Capt. James
1J Keyser, of Company A, has been elected Ma
jor.- Major Keyser was the ranking Captain of
the militia in the State, h tying received tee first
-commission under the new militia law.

Edward Hunter, No. 613 Jayne street,was entered
last even tug through a hack window. The thieves
carried off some papers and a small amount of
money

some clothing and counterfeit money.
ASSAULT WITU A Ce.un.—James Ferguson was
before Alderman N ill, this morning, upon the
charge of assault sad battery. Ho was at
Ric hmoud street at .d Lehigh avenue, yesterday,
and struck a horse with a elu't. The driver of the
animal remonstrated with Ferguson, and, it is
alleged, was also struck by him. Held in 6800
ball for trial.

until it looked like a toad's. lie was very sick
afterward, but rt ceivcd no pity from either of the
mates. He was kept sawing wood for a month.
and was struck once with a heavy piece of wood.

Rubies a donation from the Government of 12,800 acres
of land per wfla, the Company is entitled to a subsidy in
U. S. bonds on its line as completed and accepted, at the
average rate of about SW 000 per mile, according to the
difficulties encountered, for which the Governmen• takes
a second lien as security. The Company have already
received $24,07800 of this subsidy, being in full on the
MO miles that have been examined by the United States
Commissioners.
Government Aid—Secarily of the Bonde
By its charter, the Company is permitted to ben° Its
own FIRST MORTGAIE B JNDS to the same amount as
the Government Bonds, and nwntore These Bonds are
a F list Mortgage upon the whole road and all its equip
ms DU. Such a mortgage upon what, for a long time, will
be the only s ailroad cOnnecting the Atlantic and Pacific
States, takes the highest rank as a safe security.
The earnings from the way or local business for the year
ending Juno 80. 1868, on an average of 47i miles, were
over FOUR•MILLION DOLLARS. which, after paying
all expenses, were much more thansuificient to cover all
Inter/ st liability upon that distance. and the earnings for
the last five months have been 152.286, 1 370. Tney would
have been greater. if the road bad not been taxed to its
utmost cannery to transport its , own materials for con
struction.: The income from the great pa•sengor travel.
the China freights, and the supplies for the new
Rocky Mountain States and Territories must
be ample for all interest and other liabilities.
No political action can reduce the rate of interest.
It must remain for thirty years—six per cent. per anntsm
