Porrturt.—The death of Mr. Porter, which was announced this morn ing In the papers as having been caused by his 01411 bonds, was, purely accidental. — it appears that the deceased bad - complained oT feeling un well and bad left the store for a few moments, and on his seturn, becoming dizzy, fell to the floor. At this time the unfortunate young man had in his pocket a pistol, which went off, the contents entering his left breast, causing immediate death. Mr. Porter was'a young man of much promise, and highly respected by a large eireler Of ,friends. His mother is living in Lower Merlon, Pa., while his father, who is possessed : of considerable wealth, is now in Europe. The deceased left his boarding-house, 1928 Ogden street, yesterday afternoon,in good spirits; and so continued until taken sick about half-past four o'clock in the afternoon. The affair created much excitement in the neighborhood of his store, 924 Spring Gar den street. and a large crowd lingered around the place until late in .the tavening, in the hope of learning the particulars of the sad affair. Dr. Talmage 's Church, Seventh street, above Brown. to participate in The meeting held under the auspices of the Young People's Association of the Church. The Presi dent, .Dr. Reynolds, was in the chair, and* the proceedings were evened with prayer by Mr. McCarty. Alter singing an appropriate, hymn, Mr. Hiram Ward was introduced to the audience and made a forcible address. He was followed by Thomas M. Coleman, who showed how far - intemperance had gained head Way,and how little church members had exerted themselves to re tard its raogress. At the conclusion of this ad dress; hey. Dr. Shepherd was introduced, and made-soma appropriatelemarks._ _The occasion was one of much interest; alt present Retelling to the remarks with profound attention. The cause of temperance will be advanced by similar meet ings being held in other churches. , GELIERAT. McLean as mustering officer, have placed a splendid paint ing of General Grant, executed by Mr. Hartley, in the Methodist Fair now being held at • Hord cultural Hall in aid of aged and infirm members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They pro pose to awarW to the organization selling the most tickets. — The proceeds will be for the re pleniabing of the Widows' and Orphans' Fund of the Union soldiers who fell in battle, and to aid in building the Mime in question. • MURDEROUS Tanmars.—Ralph Stone was ar rested last evening at Frankford road and Som erset street on tbe charge of making an attack upon his wife with intent to kill. It appears that he had been separated from her for some time and that he had got married to another woman. He informed his lawful wife of the fact, and requested her to go with him and toll* , that he was her lawful husband. This she refused to do, hence the attack. Be was held in $l,OOO to anaWer. Ov=coital THlEF.—William Gray went into the Club House, Thirteenth and Walnut streets,- . last evening, and stole a fine overcoat belonging to a gentleman connected with the Club. The harness is supposed to have been taken from the stable of a physician.
