MURDER IN IHE TIMM) *VAUD.
A Woman Cboac4 to_Deatit by Her
liusband.
Mrs. Mary Walmsley, aged 38 years, residing at
No. 2 Gaffney's avenue, running south from Fits
water, between Sixth and Seventh streets, was
choked to death by her husband,
Icy, this morning. The house Iwhichhc the mur
der was committed is a three-story brick, and is
occupied by different tenants, as nearly
all the houses in that avenue are.
The deceased lived in the basement.
For some 'time' past her husband has been ab
sent, being engaged as a band on a farm. Da
ring his absence the mother of Mrs. Walmsley
has been staying 'with her. The room is uncar
peted, and the furniture consisted of a bedstead
and two chairs.
Yesterday afternoon Walmsley came home. He
brought with him $l6. Out of that amount $5
were expended for whisky and other things, and
the balance was given to Mrs. Walmsley. All
hands got pretty drunk, and a continuous quar
rel was ,cept up during sliest the entire night.
As fighting is no unusual circumstance in that
locality, neither the visitors or the other occu
pants of the house paid any attention to the
noise.
This morning, about 5 o'clock, the quarrel be
tween Walmslcy and his wife was renewed. She
bad placed in her bosom $ll given to her last
night, and Walmsley endeavored to take it from
her. She resisted and a struggle ensued. He
seized her by the throat and held her until she
became black in the lace. He also struck her in
the face and kicked her. The mother of Mrs.
Walmsley interfered on behalf of her daughter
and was also kicked. It was then found that
Mrs. Walmsley, who had fallen to the floor, was
dead. and Walmsley lied before an alarm could
be given.
The police were soon notified of the occurrence,
and search was made for_the murderer, without
avaiL Ho was traced to several taverns in the
neighborhood, but lib could not be found by the
officers. He is a tall man, about forty years of
age, with sandy hair a nd goatee, and wears a
itaig, light overcoat with car flaps.
Coroner Daniels summoned a jury and viewed
the body this morning. The inquest will be held
tc-morrow.

ALLEGED WirE BEArr.a.--Jacob Graeff, re
siding at No. 924 North Third street, was before
Recorder Glvin, this morning, upon the charge
of assault and battery on his wife. Mrs. Graefl's
face was badly bruised, and she presented the
appearance of having been very harshly treated.
The accused was held in 431,000 ball for trial.
CRUELTY TO ANLUALS.—CharIes Conway was
arrested yesterday at Water and Vine streets,
upon the charge of cruelly treating his horse. He
was taken before Alderman Toland, and was
held to answer.
AK INSANE WomAN.—A young woman; named
Mary Pyno, evidently Insane, was found wan
dering about the streets in the neighborhdod of
Seventeenth and Pine streets. She was sent to
the Almshouse.
RIIN OVER.—This morning, about half-past
eight o'clock, Mrs. Mary Lee was run over by a
milk-wagon, at Fifth and Market streets, and had

REFORMATION SERVICES.—Next Sunday morn
lig and evening will be observed in St. Mark's
Lutheran Church, Spring Garden and Thirteenth
streets, witlrepecial musical services, commemo
rative of the close of the seventh jubilee year.
The choir, augmented for the oecasion, and under
the direction of Mr. H. Knauff, will perform the
Messiah Hallelujah, " Judah Arise" and " Lord,
how pleasant," by Mozart; "Great and Glorious"
and a Hallelujah, by Haydn ; also, a theme and
chorus from Rossini, "Lift up the Shawm.” A
brass quartette, from the very best talent in the
city, is engaged to assist. The German choral
tunes arc a particular feature. Luther's great
hymn. Eiji Fe.' e 13nrg, sung by choir and congre
gation, with full organ and brass accompani
ment, is a thing that can be heard here only about
once in ilfty years.. A Choral, by Bach. will also
be sung in the evening, and the music to the re
sponses of the Lutheran service will be given with
lull effect.
REPUBLICAN 1.. N% IN( ini.ks.--The great trip of

to make the demonstration a grand success. A
special train will be In readiness, and we hope
every member will turn ontv as the citizens of
Trenton - are expecting the full corns, and arc pre
paring to give a hearty welcome.
Rant 1.1.1( AN INC 11 , 1-I{ , .—The trip of the Re_
publican IhNincibles to Norristown this evening
promises to be the grandest affair of the cam
paign. Great preparations have been made to
make it an ovation to the sterling political organ
ization of our city. Their fame is world wide, and
our Republican friends of Montgomery county
are determined to do matters up in fine style.
The ladies (God bless them !) have prepared a
flag. regulation size, for the Ulub. It will be pre
sented this evening, with all the accustomed hon
ors. Arrangements have been made to return to
the city at a seasonable hoer.
Itzm I.l.ics may be ungrateful, but one thing
is a fixed fact about their people—they buy their
breech(' where they buy them the beet. For
this reason such VMltitudes flock to Wanamaker
dr, Brown's great clothing bazaar, corner Sixth
and Market streets. Here everybody—boy and
man—finds the utmost of his requirements in
quality and fashion—at prices that could only be
fixed by a house that caters for the million.
That this Is so, anybody can see by even a cur
sory inspection.
THE LAST or THE St•NNY So ETH.—The remains
of the hull of the brig Sunny South, which was
recently destroyed by fire, off Chester. with a
cargo of benzine, were raised by Messrs. Murphy
,Sz Dusenberry, of this city, and towed up to pier
.No. 19, where it lay till yesterday, when it was
sold by Messrs. Powell & West, auctioneers, for
$1.500. The time occupied in raising the hull
was three &Lye.
SA RI;ATII-SC11001, ANNI VERSA RY.--The first an..
niversary exercises of the Memorial Baptist Bab

recitations, and other proceedings of an in

FENe AaTS.—The sale of American Pictures
and Crystal Medallions from the American Art
Gallery, N. Y., was commenced last evening, to
be continued on this and to-morrow evenings,
commencing at 7;,4 o'clock, at _Scott's Art Gal
lery, 1020 Chestnut street. The prices brought
were low, being (mite unexpected. This evening

IT IS WONDERFUL how cheap goods are sold at
Gay's China Palace, 1022 Chestnut street. The stock
was all selected by Mr. Gay in person from the largest
manufactories in Europe. The cause of their being so
remarkably cheap is the great redaction of prices on
the other side of the water. Business being very dull,
all the manufacturers have large stocks on hand. and
are willing to discount largely to effect sales. Below
we quote prices of a few staple goods. Fancy are at a
still greater discount.
