DESTEUCTIVE FIRE IN THE SIXTEENTH WARD—
A SPOKE, HUB AND FELLOE FACTORY BURNED.
—This morning, about three o'clock, a fire was
discovered In a large, double brick building, at
Front and Canal streets, in the Sixteenth Ward.
The structure was three stories in height, the
upper story being frame anti the lower portion
brick, and was about forty feet front by one hun
dred in depth, with several frame attachments in
the roar. The principal occupants of the building
were John G. Davis & Son, manufacturers of
spokes. The northern portion of the building
was occupied by Washington Filler, manufac
turer of hubs, and B. F. Miller, manufacturer of
felloes, also occupied a portion of the establish
ment
The flames were first seen in the basement,
among a lot of shavings and refuse matter which
had been put there to be used in the fire under
the boiler. Owing to the combustible nature of
the contents of the building, the fire soon spread
through every portion of it, and the structure
was gutted. Several of the frame attachments
were also burned. A one-story brick structure,
known as the saw- ouse, was also destroyed.
The boil inert' were in the basement.
and were greatly damaged. Some of the sheds,
containing hard lumber, and a considerable quan
tity of material in the yard, were saved. Among
the property destroyed were 50,000 hubs. 150.000
spokes, and allot of lumber in process of season
ing.
The loss of the occupants of the building is es
timated at $50,000, upon which there is an insur
ance of s2s,oootin Now York, New England and
Baltimore companies.
The real estate is owned by the estate of John
Negfey, deceascd. The loss is estimated at $B,OOO
and is supposed to be insured.
The origin of the fire is not known at present
but is being investigated by the Fire Marshal.
