    CITY BULLETIN,
AITACK ON REPUBLICAN CLUBS-SEVERAL PER-
soss imunnp.—Last night, about Melva o'clock
6 the Sixteenth, SeVenteenth and Nineteenth,
Ward Republican clubs wore passing : np Second
street, on their way home from the meeting In
Broad street, they were attacked by a party of
individuals who were assembled at the corner of
_Race street. Some of this crowd first invited an
attack by cheering for Seymour and Blair, but
finding that the Republicans paid no attention to
them, they began the assault. •When the Republi
cans defended themselves, the assailants rushed
into the house of• the Vigilant Engine Company,
which leads to the supposition that they were
members or adherenta,of that company. Bricks'
and stones were hurled, it is said, from the win
dows of the engine house, and from the roofs of
adjoining houses. During the fighting in
the street, pistols were fired and axes were
used. A general alarm was struck
on the bell on the top of the Vigilant House, as if
calling for reinforcements, but the effect was op
posite to that desired, for a strong body of the
Fourth District Pollee soon arrived on the
ground. By the efforts of the pollee the dht
turbance was quelled and the destruction of the'
Vigilant Engine House was probably prevented.
Several parties were injured in the melee.,
Thomas Kelley, of the Sixteenth Ward, was
shot in the ann.
Wm. Lawson, of the Seventeenth Ward; was
struck in the face with an axe, and had a portion
of his nose nearly severed.
Henry F. Bucher, of the NlnSteenth Ward, was
struck in the shoulder with a brick, and was se
verely injured.
James Haggerty had his foot hurt by a-flying
missile.
A number of other persons belonging to the
different clubs were also injured.
The affair caused much excitement in the
neighborhood.
Tun Niacermann WARD Mt:RMS.—The horri
ble butchery of little Mary Mohrmann in the
Nineteenth Ward still remains a profound mys
tery. All of the efforts of the Detective officers
and Lient. Witeraft and the Eleventh District
Police, to obtain a clue which will, lead to the
arrest of the perpetrator of the fiendish crime,
have, thus far, proved unavailing. The officers
are still at work energetically,
Hon. Wm. B. Mann the District Attorney, has
offered a reward of $5OO for information that
will lead to the detection and conviction of the
criminal. This is in addition to the reward of
$l,OOO offered by the city authorities. .
A meeting of the citizens of the Nineteenth
Ward was held last evening at the
nubile house, 2319 North Seventh street,
for the purpose of adopting measures to secure,
if possible, the arrest of the murderer.
William Murther was appointed Chairman. A
vigilance committee was appointed to visit all
suspicious localities, and thus aid the authorities
in securing the perpetrator of the foul deed.
Another meeting will be held on Saturday even
ing.
A GOOD DEDIOCRAT.---JIIMeB Murray was ar
rested yesterday,at Second and Callowhill streets,
for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. When he
was locked up in the Seventh District Police Sta
tion by Lieut. Franks, he showed Me colors. He
cheered for Seymour:He denounced the Govern
ment. He said that he had served in the rebel
army and was still fighting for the "lost cause."
This morning Murray had shearing before Alder
man Toland, and was held in $1,500 bail to keep
the peace.
RAILIZOAD AccroENT.--This morning, about 11
o'clock, a lad named John Teller, aged 7 years,
residing on Carpenter street, above Eighth, was
run over by a freight train on Washington ave
nue:, above Eighth street. He was riding on a
car and fell off. One leg was completely severed
below the knee, and the other was crushed in a
shocking manner. The little sufferer was conveyed
to the Pennsylvania Hospital. •
LAHCENY.--John Snider, James Etter and
Wm. Farrell were in the tailor store of John F.
Steffen, No. 516 North Ninth street, last night,
and after they left a pair of pants was missed.
The men were followed to Eleventh and Girard
aveune and were there arrested. The pants were
found on Farrell. The prisoners were committed
by Alderman Hood.,
CHARGED wrrn 311iTINY.—Charles Sheckland,
Wm. Woodrlek and John Isombarry, sailors of
the brig Lane, from Leghorn, were arrested yes
terday upon the charge of mutiny. ThOy were
locked up to await a hearing before the United
States Commissioner.
BROKE DOWN.—As the steamer of the Hibernia
Fire Company was proceeding to the fire yester
day one of the wheels gave way and the appa
ratus was f _rown'to the ground. The company
has an extra set of wheels, and therefore will not
be obliged to go out of service.
SAFE-BLOW=6.—The fire-proof safe in the
commission house of Nathan Sellers, Nos. 2106
and 2108 Market street, was blown open last
night. The thieves obtained little or nothing for
their trouble.
A PLEASANT Tllf E.—The German Artists' Club
had a picnic yesterday 4, Engel & Wolf Farm.
The ladies and gentlemen who participated in
the affair enjoyed themselves in various ways,
and had a very pleasant time.
BLIGHT FlRE.—Between twelve and one o'clock
this morning the spice manufactory of Weickei
Jr Smith, No. 137 North Front street, was slightly
damaged by fire.
Tim HOME M U‘SIONAEY SOCIETY.—This benefi
cent institution has seetred an excellent and per
manent location at No. 533 Arch street, and it is
now prepared to begin its good work with - re
newed assurances of success. The agent of the
Society, Mr. E. H. Toland, and the missionaries.
Messrs. W. W. Walter and A. G. Rowland, will
soon begin their calls for assistance from our
citizens, and we sincerely hope they will meet
with as liberal and generous a response as the
merits of the Society deserve.
WEST JERSEY RAILROAD.—The fall and winter
arrangement of the West Jersey Railroad was f
commenced to-day. The time of departure of
the different trains will be found in another
column.
POINT BREEZE PARK.—To - morrow there will
be a trot for' a premium of $3OO, open to all
double teams. Several well known horses }nee
been entered, and the contest will no doubt be
.highly interesting.
TEE DAMAGE REPAIRED.—Tne Chesapeake and
Delaware Canal, which was recently damaged,
has been thoroughly repaired, and is now in com
plete order for the passage of vessels. The re
pairs required wefe much lighter than it was at
first supposed would he necessary.

rib STArtiES OF THE FROMM
PRINCE, BY CARPEAUX.
The statue of the Prince Imperial, repre
sented as embracing the neck of the famous
hound Nero (that late, latest, and most sin
cerely mourned Prime Minister of the impe
rial household,) was the most admired work
of the artist Carpeaux at the Exposition,
whither it had been removed from the recep
tion-rooms of the Httel de Ville. It has now
been restored to the magnificent hall of the
Prefect, but Mr. Hausmann will not much
longer have the honor of possessing an unique
specimen s
• the young Prince will be redu,
cotta, three sizes, -
plicated, by imperial command, in terra-
L e. life statu
ette, and bust.
The Prefect of the North has sires iv ad
vised histonstituents of "the opportu aity of
acquiring for the Hotel of tli.t Prr teet ra du
Nord" a 'replica of the statue,
,for which he
bees a credit of 390 francs. z. -
In a few days, the eighty - eight prefectures
of Prance will be garnished with eighty-eight
similar terra-cottas,lourchased at the:expense
of the tax-payers. The departments will fel
low suit, for in such a canelthe Prefects will
successively play the game of the sheep of
Rouge.
The Prefect of the North reminds his coun
cil that the artist Carpeaux being a native of
Valenciennes, and a fellow-constituent, the
selection will be a "precious encouragement"
for him.
M. Carpeaux, however, w also feel mea
surably contented with the other eighty-seven
orders.
The work will be executed at the Tuileries.

The Western World knows that China is a very large
country, in the main densely peopled; but few yet rea
lize that she contains more than a third of the Inman
race. The latest returns made to her central authorities
or taxing purposes, by the local magistrates, make her
population Four Hundred and Fourteen Millions, and
this is more likely to bo under than over the actual ag

quick to avail themselves of every proffered facility for
Procuring early information. It is observed in Cantor
nia that the Chinese make great use of the telegraph,
though it there transmits messages in English alone. To
day, great numbers of fleet steamers are owned by Chi

transmission of early intelligence. If the telegraph we
