point of the joke, and sent the perpetrators to
lloyrunensing Prison.
John Connell is the name of another joker who
got into trouble. Last night about eleven o'clock
he was observed entering a house at Nineteenth
and Callowhlll streets. Ina few minutes, he

his arm. A watchful policeman nabbed him,
when he said that be was only playing off aloket.

CORONER'S hiQUIC:BTB.—The Coroner held an .
inquest this morning upon the body of W. W.
Romer, whose death resulted from the explosion
of gas at the U. S. Mint on Monday. The de
ceased was the gas-fitter employed in the estab

burns, the result of the explosion.
An inquestwaS also held on the body of the
little boy James Mcßride, who was killed by
being run overa Race and Vine Streets Pas
senger car, on Twenty-third street near Wood.
The verdict returned was accidental death.
FOUND DaAn.—The Coroner has charge of the
body of an unknown white man, 35 years of ago,
which was found on the ground of the Alms
house on Monday afternoon. The deceased was
5 feet 9 inches high, brown curly hair, dark red
moustache and goatee, and was dressed in a
linen duster, gray mixed pants, gray cloth vest,
white shirt, low shoes, and was wounded in two
places in the right hand, and had lost the ford
finger. He had a bill from Oldach & Morgentha
ler, Stationers, in the name of Theodore Deveau,
Manch Chunk. His pants wore marked - "Wm.
E. Sturgess, Sept. 6, 1867."
Lorrnar POLICW DEALERS IN TROUBLE.—WiI.
ham E. German, William Hecker, Amos Baker,
William Schutt, Reuben Wise, and William Black
ley, were arrested yesterday in Allentown by
Deputies U. 8. Marshal Sharky, Schuyler and
Duke, upon a warrant issued by IL S. Commis
sioner Patton, upon the charge of selling lottery
policies, without having paid the special tax pro
vided for in the Internal Revenue law. The-ac-
Lund were brought to the city and had a hearing
this morning, when they were held to bail for
trial.
RECOVERED MS 61%MM-A lad named James
Sherrard, 15 years of age, posted himself in
Spring Garden Market this Morning. He put
out his bat to gather in the stray nickels of pas
4e'sers by, and excited sympathy by pretending to
be deaf and dubib. Policeman Reeder, who
seems to have .a peculiar knack of making dumb
beggars speak, got at Sherrard, and he soon re
" covered his voice. The Imposter was then ar
--, rested, and was locked up at the Central Station.
CARELEss Durvimo.—This morning about half
past nine o'clock a natal wagon Was driven out
of the avenue east of the Post-oilice and when
near the curb-stone - on Chestnut . street the shaft
struck a woman., She seized the shaft to save
herself froth falling, but the driver did not rein
in his horse, and the woman was thrown into
the gutter. The, wheels of the wagon passed
over her foot, causing a slight injury. The driver
of the wagon wag nrrpopd
A TROUBLE/3031E . VY OMAN . —Martha Copeland,
living at Lloyd and Sergeant streets, in the
Eighteenth Pollee District, was arraigned before
Alderman Neill this morning. Several of the
neighbors deposed that Martha has a very long
tongue, and that she is very lavish in the nee of
Hit. Her attacks are made upon nearly every
' t body, and she uses the moat insulting language.
She was held in $l.OOO boil for trial.
OWNERS WANTRI).—An oio norse and a huck
ster wagon are awaiting an owner at the Seven
*. teenth District Police Station.
The Eleventh District Pollee have a one-seat
wagon and a set of gears, for which an owner is
desired.
FATAL RESULT.—Jefferson Daniels, who fell
from the spire of the new Methodist Church at
' Bustleton, Twenty-third Ward, on Monday, died
. from the effects of his injuries, on the same night.
He was 38 years of age.
Lamr ExrttisioN.—A coal oil lamp exploded
at the hotel of Mrs. Mack, No. 241 South Front
street, last night about eleven o'clock, and caused
considerable damage.
MANHATTAN CO-OPERATIVE RELIEF ASSO( IA-
TioN.—All Life Insurance is intended to make
provision for survivors by stated payments
during the lifetime of the person insured. Many
a young merCharit - or - clilrk can pay BT6O - to '5200
per annum to secure an adequate provision for
..., his family in case of his early death ; and thou
sands have thus been saved from beggary and
wretchedness. Whether this or that form of
Life Insurance is best, we do not decide; but the
• . Manhattan Co-operative Relief Association seems
to combine the features of a Benefit Society with
those of ordinary Life Insurance. The initial
payments are very moderate ; 'bat of Course all
that the members receive they must pay—there
'Xis no escape from this law. Those who live
longest will pay most; those who die soonest
will secure to their families great advantages at
-, 4 : email cost.
We believe the officers of the Manhattan to be
ihonest and responsible, and their plan fairly set
? forth in their prospectus, to which we direct
those contemplating Life Insurance, leaving
each to judge for hlmself.—,N. Y. Tribune,
_August 11th.
GaICiASTIC EXESCISES.—There is perhaps no
better way for persons of delicate bodily frame to
preserve the stock of health laid in at the sea
or mountain side than by going, through a
judicious course of gymnastic or calisthenic ex
ercises. At the popular gymnasium of Prof. L.
Lewisvformerlyaillebrand Sr., Lewis, at the cor
ner of Ninth and Arch, physical culture in every
detail is taught in the most scientific and practi
cal manner. Great care is taken by Prof. Lewis
in training and developing the muscular
system of children and youths of weakly consti
tutions of either sex ; the young lady pupils, be
ing under special charge of airs. Lewis. The ap
paratus of this gymnasium is extensive, embrac
ing all the newest Inventions. Prof. Lewis is well
known as a thorough teacher of calisthenics and

This Company, National In its clutracter, offers,
by reason of its Large Capital, Low Rates of Pre
mium and New Tables, the most desirable means
of insuring life yet presented to the public. :
The rates of premium, being largely reduced,
are made as favorable to the Insurers as time of
the best Mutual Companies, and avoid ali the
complications and uncertainties of Notes, Divi
dends and the misunderstandings which the latter
are apt to COMO the Policy-Holders.
Beverarnew. and attractive tables are now pre=
seated, which need only , to be understood to"
prove acceptable-to the public, such as the IN
COME.PRODUCING POLICY and - RETURN
PREMIUM POLICY. ln the former, the policy
bolder not only scenes a life insurance, payable
