AR( BrnßrT ME. Couneu.—The members
and congregation of Arch Street Methodist Epis
copal Church held a meeting in their chapel, cor
ner of Broad and Arch streets, recently, for the
purpose of receiving and welcoming their newly
appointed pastor, the oltev. Charles rt. Payne,
lately- transferred from Brooklyn, New York,
East Conference. A warm, cordial and hearty
welcome was extended to bhn by the congrega
tion through John Whiteman, E.q , to which he
made an appropriate reply. A general introduc
tion then took place, and a pleasant hour was
poised by the pastor and congregation. A sub
scription for the building of the main church
edifice was quietly started amongst the members,
and it was headed 'by one of them with a•
eithecriptiop of forty thousand doll irs ($40, 000 ).
and followed by a nuMber of smaller ones,
amounting in all, during the, evening, to eighty
one thousand and eight hundred dollars ($81,800.)
The evening being an Inclement one, a number
of the prominent members were absent. It is
confidently expected that the subscription will be
raised to over one hundred thousand dollars in a
short time. The congregation has already pur
chased the ground and built the chapel at a cost
of about' seventy-two thousand dollars, which
has all been paid. ow propose to build
the church at thecornern of Broad aud Arch
streets, (extending the roof over the chapel,) of
pure white marble, with a marble spire two hun
dred and twenty-seven feet high (227). The main
room will ac,commedate about 1,200 people; the
structure will be finished in the most eleg
upon
the church t and it will be pushed on to comple
tion as "rapidly as possible.
ATTEMPT wo SHOOT A LAWN - HR.—During the
progress of a bearing at the office of Alderman
Fitch, yesterday afternoon, an attempt was made
to shoot a member of the bar who was engaged
in the ease. One of the principal witnesses was
a woman, and Mr. O'Neill, counsel for the de
fence, during his remarks, took occasion to
speak rather lightly of her character. Her
brother, *So was present, got excited, and
finally drew a' pistol. He pointed the pistol at
Mr. O'Neill and pulled the trigger. Fortunately
the cap only snapped. A second attempt was
made to fire the pistol, when the man was seized
by Alderinan Fitch and handed over to .a police
man. He subsequently had a hearing, and was
held to ball to answer the charge of carrying
concealed deadly weapons. The scene caused
ulte a sensation in the office for a short time.
Lzcrunss ox Box..txx.—lt is a fact worthy of
being known that no public course of lectures on
Botany in America has ever been so well attended
and so long sustained as that of Professor Ennis.
This is the thirteenth summer that the ladies and
gentlemen of our city have enjoyed his lectures.
generally eighteen every season, and fall one-half
of these are out in the groves around Philadel
phia, illustrated by living flowers. On Saturday
morning last, notwithstanding the backwardness
of the season, the class found sixteen different
species of flowers in full bloom at a single lo
cality, that at Robinson's Knoll. The free Open
ing lecture of the new course will be given to
morrow, as appears by advertisements in another
column.
FATAL ACCIDENT.-At the tire in Commerce

rick Neely, Eugene Christ and Henry Young,
were arrested yesterday upon the charge of
having stolen a pair of trained goats, valued at
$lOO, from York and Gold streets. The goats

STEALING MINCE MAT.--Ann Gill was before
Aid. Bottler last evening upon the charge of the
larceny of a keg of mince meat from a store on
South Water street. She was committed. She is
the same woman who was arrested for the larceny
of a piece of cloth from a store near Second and
Chestnut streets some time since, and then gave
her name as Ann Fitzgerald.
SMASHING THINGB.—An individual named Geo.
Dillon went into a house at Spafford and ahip

an unknown white man was found in the Dela
ware at Laurel street wharf.
STILT, BEIZED.-A still and worm were seized
yesterday afternoon at McGinegars tavern, at
Cumbeiland and Beach streets.
—Probably no ground, for its area, surpasses
in archaeological interest that portion of the Pala
tine hill purchased by the Emperor of France from
the ex-King of Naples. It is a mine of artistic
wealth, teeming with statues, altars, ornaments
and rich marbles. Signor Rosa, to whom the ex
cavations on this site are entrusted, has
just discovered a large altar, bearing an
inscription stating that it was erected by
Cneius Domitius Calvinus, twice vice consul,
B. C. 53 and 40. Ho largely decorated
the Palatine with treasures, granted to him by
the Senate after the suppression of the Iberian
insurrection. The altars supposed to have stood
before the statue of Jupiter Victor, in the temple
of that name.
