work of demolishing Miller's Chestnut Strete
Honse,on the north aide of Chestnut streetbelow
Fourth, was commenced to-day. Upon the Rita

tdifiee. The new structure Will have' a front of 41
feet and a depth of 141 feet. The fagade will be of
white marble and in the Italian style of architee
tunheimilar to that of the First National Bank,witli
two ranges of arched openiegs and a projecting
400rWliy. Above the main entrance will be a figure
of a dcg with a key in his mouth, watentag a
safe, designed by Bailey, the sculptor. The en
tire building is to be • ilre-proof, and constructed
in a most substantial manner. While the edifice
will have. the appearance on the front of being
two etories in height, it will be but one, and the
light for the rooms and offices in the rest, will

lion of general business is to be 41 by 38 feet,
and 27 fcct high. Immediately at the rear of it
is to be pieced the vault, about 28 feet square,
most massive one, calculated to weigh 1300,000
pounds; this to be encased in walls of granite,.
so as, to render it inaccessible to all but
those having the right to enter. 'A room 16 by 32
feet fronting the general office, is to be fitted up
for the nee of depositors, and Wildes the regul
ate rooms for the President, Directors, dzo.,
therevill be a kitchen in which to prepare meals
tor the clerks. The baßement will contain fifteen
_hundred boxes for the use of depositors, and ele
vators will be placed convenient to the general
office, for the easy transmission of valuables up
and down. The time Axed for the completion of
the structure is in February of next year. Its
entire cost, including vault and furniture, will
axceed $259,000.,

der, from Pennington, S. J., was attacked by
fewitnegrOelt at Seventh and St. Mary streets, -

tween one and two < o'clock this morning. He
hnOehei down and beaten. and was robbed
of his watch and live dollars in cash. The as
sailants were arrested—two of them on the spot,
and two of them afterwards. The prisoners gave
their, names as John Brown, William States,
AMA. 011,yard and Wm. French, and they were
all Identified by Mr. Lander. They were com
mitted for trial. •

PRESS Oran.--The stated meeting of the Press
Club of Philadelphia for the reading of essays and
general debate will be held to-morrow afternoon,
at the new' rooms, No. 607 Walnut street, third
atm. The new quartets are in a very eligible
location, and are vet, suitable for the purposes
for which they are intended.; The rooms have
been neatly, and comfortably furnished, and the
library. which has now become quite extensive,
midis - constantly Increasing, has been well ar
ranged for the use of the member?.
LAT,CENT of A WATen.—Robert K. Stewart wa
before Alderman Massey yesterday upon the
ehluge of the larceny of a watch. It seems that
Stewart and a man named Rodgers were out to
gether, and Rodgers got intoxicated. While in a
lawn' Rodgers was robbed Of a gold watch
Nalued at $2OO. The watch was pawned for $6O,
and Chief Lemon ascertained where it had been
pledged. Yesterday Stewart - called at the pawn.

AIIRESTED.—John Kelley was arrested yester
day at /Seventh and Bedford streets, by Police
man Cook, of the Ninth District, upon the charge
of larceny. He was one of the men who asked
permission to warm themselves in the church at
Twenty-second and Mt. Vernon streets, on Sun
day evening, and took an overcoat belonging to
the sexton. The stolen garment was Tound on
the person of Kelley when he was arrested. The
defendant was committed by Alderman Pancoast.
RECtIVING STOLEN GOODS. - A colored man
named Jonathan Cole,the proprietor of a second
hand shop at Front and Dock streets, was ar
rested yesterday and taken before Alderman
Morrow upon the charge of having purchased a
stolen push-cart. It is said that he is in the
habit of buying all sorts ^of articles, many of
which are stolen. He was held in $BOO hail to
answer at court.
BELLIGRItENT.—Two Germane, named Ferdi
nand Schatz and Frederick Heller, went into a
beer saloon at Germantown road and Sixth street
last evening, raised a disturbance, broke the
glasses, smashed the windows, and when remon
busted with, beat the proprietor.. They were ar
rested, taken before Alderman Heins and held hi
4 1,1,000 bail.
DEATH OF A PAPEI MERCIIANT.-Mr. P. Mc-
Kenna, senior partner of the firm of A. Dimond
Sr, Co., 'wholesale book and paper manufacturers,
died this morning. Mr. McKenutt was extensive
ly known and highly esteemed by the trade
throughout the country for his integrity as a
merchant.
Emmons MM.:Mk:F.—A. young man named
Thomas Lytle was arrested yesterday for destroy
ing the grass on the side of the reservoir at
Fairmount. He was fined by Alderman Pan•
comet. '
EAoi.r.finor.—.k. handsome grey eagle,measur
ing five feet from the tips of wings, was
shot a day or two ago by Mr. Ed. Gibbs, on his
plantation, on the. Delaware, a few miles below
the city.
T/LI, TAPPED.—The money-drawer of the dry
goods store of Mrs. E. L. Clark, No. 1128 Spring
Garden street. was robbed of $5O about three
o'clock yesterday afternoon.

of the Stockholders of the Chamber of Com
merce will be held on Saturday.

to Camden have been greatly annoyed at frequent
deptudations made upon their poultry yards.
At last a colored man named Branson was cap
tured, baying in his possession a large number of
chickens, which he confeesed to having stolen.
He was committed by Mayor Cox to answer at

Ew FERRY BOAT.—The new ferry boat for
the West Jersey Company, the heel of which was
laid last week, it is said will be completed by the
fourth of July next. It is to be the largest ferry
boat on the river.

streets of North and Middle Ward, Camden, has
been awarded to James C. Sloan, who has gone
to work with commendable earnestness.
