DIFFICULTY IN A CHURCH—PASTOR PREVENTED
FWD& PREACITING.—A difficulty occurred yester
day at the Eleventh Baptist Church, Twelfth
street, above Race. It seems that' about two
weeks ago a majority of those having charge of
the Church voted to dispenEo with the services of
Rev. R. S. Tharin, -the Pastor, after the lst of
April. This action was communicated to the re
verend gentleman. Yesterday he appeared in 'the
pulpit as usual, and took his text f'rom James
111; 1:. "My brethren be not many masters,
knowing that we shall receive the greater con
demnation." From this Mr. Tharin proceeded to
preach a sermon, in the course of which ho re
ferred to the difficulty with those who had voted
to oust him, and in forcible language he expressed
his opinion of the action of the majority.
Be was interrupted by one of the deacons,
ae ho announced that no such language as that
used by Mr. Tharin could be tolerated in the
chtirch. The minister continued; meinbors'began
to leave the house, and the Indications of _a scene
culminated, when one of the deacons Ordered the
organ to be played so that the voice of the
preacher could not be heard. The result was the
summary dismissal of the eongregaiion. Subse
quently a meeting was held and a motion to close
the church until Thursday next was carried by a
vote of eighty yeas to thirty-five nays.
A committee was then sent to the Chief of
Police for a force to attend the church in the
evening, in order to prevent the possibility of a
disturbance should there be any attempt to open
the house. At seven o'clock a crowd of about
two hundred persons. mostly females, gathered
in front of the building, where they remained
quietly discussing the condition of affairs, until
a quarter of eigkao'cleck, when Rev. Mr. Tharin
appeared and advanced to the door. Find
ing it closed and lucked, he appealed to a
policeman to try the fastening in order to
bolaly himself that the building was closed. The
policeman declined to interfere in any way, where
upon Mr. Tharin, turning to the crowd on the
sidewalk, said: "Friends, re have been excluded
trona the church. 1 believe that I have been un
justly excluded front my pulpit. bet may course is
greater than man's, and thank God there is an
earthly tribunal to which we can appeal tor jwi
tice. Please leave me quietly and recant to yOur
hothep." ThV advice Was promptly folio w4.,t.
and the crowd dispersed.
A Bier Norse. ON ins TLAVELS.—A day or two
Once it well-dressed man, with a plausible ad-
Mese, introduced himself to the firm of George
H. Vambhe & Co.. importers of brandies, wines,

gave an order on Gen. Robert Patterson &
Co. for the mousy, stating that he had shipped
*170,000 worth of cotton to the latter firm, and
was going to New York to dispose of his pur
chases. An attendant was at once despatched to
General Patterson with the order, and directly
after his departure Sibley ex - pressed a desire to go
to his hotel and fix bp a little, and in an off-hand

make some little nsccsssry purchases. ills re
quest was evaded, when he retired, stating that
he would soon l hack. The Messenger re
turned from General Patterson with the informa
tion that similar orders had been presented to
him five different times the same day, and that he
knew nothing whatever regarding the man Sib
ley, or the firm of Williams, Wilcox& Co. It
was at once apparent that the fellow is a swin
dler on his travels. He Is appal ently 30 years of
age, has a decidedly Southern look, wears a yel
lowish moustache, is quite thin and with high
cheek bones, and was dressed in a back suit, and
wore a black felt hat. While waiting in the store
of George H. Vandik6 & Co., he asked for letters
of introduction to certain parties in Germantown,
which were prudently withheld.

Anecdotes by tscottistt ,Bishops,
The Bishop of Argyll, in a letter addressed
to Dean Ramsay concerning the ancient and
now feeble Episcopalian churches of the
Western - Highlands, relates some anecdotes
that have the double merit of being new and
good. The Bishop was lately compelled to
remove from a church in his diooese one of
the National society's Illuminated texts,
"Drink, and let the camels drink also."
This oddly-selected, text was no doubt in
tended for the inculcation, of kindness to the
lower animals; but in Argyleshire, where
English is a foreign language, it was calcula
ted to have quite another effect, telling the
People to drink (which they are only too
ready to do), and also to let their old ene
mies (the Caniphellz.) . on the other side of the
hill refresh themselves in the same way. -
When the late Bishop of London visited
the church at Appin- with Dr. -Ewing, they
were met by a deputation with old Kenneth
(or the merchant) at its head. Kenneth's
command of English was not great, and his
welcome ran thus: "I am proud to see here
such ancient heroes." He meant to call them
venerable. Bishop Blomtield afterwards re
marked to his:companion that the Highland
man's address made him feel as if he were
indeed a very old man.
A. very curious illustration of the supersti
tion which still lingers in his diocese is given
by Bishop Ewing. He was driving some
years ago on the shores of Lochereran atter a
confirmation, and-came to a small inn where..
he could not get corn for his horses. "Dun
can," inquired the Bishop of his servant,
"why cannot you get corn? He replied:
"The man's a Free Kirk, and he wlnna
ge'et." The Bishop insisted that corn must
be got, for they were going far; and Duncan
said - be would try, and by and by he did
get the corn. When they were supplied and
had resumed their journey, Duncan was
asked how he had contrived to make the
Free Kirk landlord give what at first he had
refused. "You see, I just said to him it was
na' safe to defy a bishop, fair, said I, they
can change things into ither things, and maybe
he'd make you into a beast; and so I got the
corn." .
Bishop Ewing thinks this may be a relic of
the mediteval doctrine of the Sacraments--a
remnant of a moral and mental past; and, if
it be so, it Is all the more curious to find it
keeping such a vital hold of even a Free Kirk
Presbyterian.
