York, and after drinking, , got into a difficulty
with the proprietor. A man named Jaines .Rai
nay, who was in the saloon, interfered on
behalf of the landlord, and attempted.to eject one
of the obnoxious individuals, but the latter drew
a Luife and stabbed Rainey . three times—once in
the abdomen, and . twice in the head. Rainey•
fell, and was soon covered with blood. Ho was
'moved to his residence In the same block, by
Cillecr Myers ' 'and his injuries are of such a
character that but little hope of his, reCovery is
entertained. The man who inflicted the stab ,
;eft the premises immediately upon the commis
sion. of the deed, and has thus far escaped. His
conipanion was arrested •by Policethan Myers.

rested this morning by ,Tohn Lemon, Chief of the,
detectives, for being sloplifters. A week or two
ego, two men entered the jewelry store of Clark
&r iiiddlo,ton Chestnut street, above Seventh,

inquired for Mr. Clark. Ho was not in, and then
some jewelry was examined. After the WM.:
\lanais left. a coral pin and ear-rings, - vained at
1025 p, were missing. On.the same day Messrs.
Wrlggin d'r. Warden, at . Fifth and Chestnut,
streets, lost a diamond set, valued at $l5O, the
same , way. This morning the supposed thieves
were observed in the store of Farr & Brother, on
Chestnut street, below Fourth, where they evl
dently• intended to play the same game. Mr.
Lamon was immediately lofonned of the fact,
and on going to:the store, captured bothh of the
fellows. The prisoners were locked up at the
Central Btation, and will have a hearing this of
A SERIOUS Cu/arm—An elderly lady belong
ing to . Baltimore, who, had been on a visit to this
city, started for the depot to return home on Sat_
urday night. She missed her way and inquired
of two men, who offered to go with her. They
Wok her to a blacksmith-shop at Pass,yunk road
and Taylor street, where they attempted to com
mit an outrageous assault upon her. but were
prevented by 6 policeman who had been wattl
ing the party. The two men were captured as
they wore Jumping over a fence. They gave
their names as Pat McGinnis and 'John Galla
gher, • and were committed .by Aid. Mink.
RECEIVING STOLEN GOODS.—Samttel Ladder,
No. 318 Brown street, was arrested on Saturday
and tAlien before Ala. Hurley, upon the charge
of receiving stolen goods. •It seems that a lad,
who was employed in the factory of Miskey,Mer
rill & Tlvekara,on Raco streetabove Vortrth,was
arrested on the charge of having stolen brass
and various articles at different times. It was
then ascertained that the stolen property had
been sold to Ladder and, upon searching his
house, a large quantity was found. The accused
was held in $l,OOO bail, to answer.
ASSAULT WITII A BLAmc-JACK.-Samuel Mc-
Namee and J. P. Tinny 'were before Alderman
Massey yesterday upon the charge of assault and
battery upon James Bensenilerfer. The latter
NV aS passing Broad and Coates streets'', a few
nights ago,when, it is 'alleged, he was attacked
by the accused and struck with a black-jack, by
which his jaw was fractured. The accused were
committed.
STEM,ING..MICERBCHAUMS.—Anthony Cook was
before Alderman Tolandmpon the charge of the
larceny of meerschaum pipes and dolls, valued•
at $2O, from the store 'of George Doll. • The
stolen property was recovered by Officer Keel, of
the Harbor Police. Cook was committed by Al
derman Toland.
CHARGED VIITH BURGLARY.—Edward Donnelly,
alias Pidgeon, was arrested last night upon the
charge of having been concerned in the robbery
of the clothing store of John Manderson, No. 714
North Second street, on the 20th inst. Ho will
have a hearing at the Central Station, this after
noon.
STABLE BURNED.-A frame stable on Percy
street, above Poplar, was destroyed by fire yes
terday morning about three o'clock. It belonged
to Nathan Custer, whose loss is 134.00, and was
occupied by George Wagner, whose loss is about
$450.
ROBBING A CANAL BOAT.-A colored man
named Abraham Jones was committed yester
day, by Aid. Toland, for the larceny of rope,
lines o &c., from a canal boat lying at Coates street
wharf. on the Delaware.
