Fora wt ekpast the 'neighborhood of :De Soto
street: between Vallee and Elliott, has been ter
ribly excited over the occurre, nee of -a series of
circumstances so mysterious in their nature as to
amaze and mystify the;whole neighborhood. Tho
partichlar locality alfeeted is the , tenement No. 263
De Soto street,at present occupied by Mr.Ttrinp-
FOll, who owns and runs several furniture , 'ears.
Somewhere about a week ago, the people Occupy
ing the house were startled by .it succession , pf
loud knocks on the outside' or front. dear.. The
family were aroused, but aster is we could learn,
no inquiries' were made that hight, save the open
ing of the door to see what had caused the knocks.
No person being visible now, it wa , t supposed
to have been caused by some n:iischlevous boys,
and so the family went to' sleep again, and were
not disturbed till morning. On the second night,
about 11 o'clock, the Same knockings . were
heard, only; now more emphatic and um cc noisy
thin before; the knockings , this time, too, were
appaiently from the outside, and the family were
afraid to go to the door. Some persons con
nected „with the family went rip stairs, where a
full view of the door could be obtained, but al
though the peal of, knocks still condoned, no
visible cause could, be seen. After a while ,thhigs
quitted down and the family went to:sleep, but
about two hours after the first alarm was neard
again the knocks pealed forth; nearer, clearer,
and more alarming than before. A gentleman
went to the, deur, but not a living, creature could.
-.be. poem and no teasonable hypotheeie could be
givenAO account for this unusual preceeding.
A man was stationed ;It a second-story wiudow,
who,'from his pushion, could see the door, and
no one could approach - it unobserved. He had
not been atills post more than half an hour.
when the knecks were agßie repeated, and crash,
crash. went pane.after pane or glass until Sven-i
teen were broken, and, irething to show hew. It
was dons--not even a - piebole as large as
a pea could be • - ,found - among the splin
tered glass. The-family, were now seriously
alarmed and began to 'consult with nen
other and with their friends; to . arive, if pesi..l
- at an elucidation ;of this anneying mystery.
Without arriving at any
,eonehision they
• all retired, and were not•• dieturbed; hguiu that
night. On the third night-the same', Seepes were
repeated, three panes of girlie being brtikeh, and
all the earthen ,jars containing milk overturned,
and their contents spilled. The "spirit ":or what
ever else it was, did not - content itself with over
turning the jars, but it broke them into', Pieces,
not ono being left whole. Satisfied with the mis
chief it had-done on this. the third night, it re-
tired, and allowed the persecuted family to on-
, oy bleep for the rest of the night, if they could. 1
On the lourth night a young man was ern-
ployed to watch the door. Ire placed his bed
close to a large safe used for holding the table
ware
and (Aline belonging to . the family. In
about an hour he aroused the family, and told
them he hail fallen asleep. and that he had had a
dream. Ile stated that he had dreamt that the
safe near which he had been sleeping had been '
overturned on lion by three men, and that he had
been covered with the debris whiM fell from it,
And' that it had awakened hire, and he concluded '
by asking sonac,of the family to sit up and watch
with him. The young'unin then moved his hod
ten feet from the safe, all the doors , of the
connecting chambers being open. and the
lights howl nr been extinguished. In about twenty
minutes After he , had again laid down, the
safe w lifted up and violently hurled toward
/
him, nd its contents almost entirely broken,
The family, now nearly paralyzed with fear,
moved about in momentary dreattof something
still more terrible to come, and, pale vvltte terror
and anxiety, it was concluded to summon in the
.neighbors, among whom was Dr. S% asson.? one
of our well-known dentists. Ile was asked to
stay in the house all night and keep the family
'company. Ile consented to do so, and sent for
-his revolver, and he also laid down. ,At this
time there were two or. three young men in the
room 160 had coons in when the alarm W3B

as no ,further . disturbance had occurred,
tbey rconcluded to go home. They had not

their d(patture, when a pair of vases— one

letters received at the Foreign Office by
the last mail from Kariapwa, give a favor
able account of the negotiation now in pro
gress by E. Van Reed,, ..:. 'Hia• Majesty's
Consul General, with the Japanese Govern
ment. These negotiations have in view the
placing of, Hawaiian products on the same
footing in Japan, as- were accorded by the
Tycpon to those of England, France and the
'United States by the convention entered into
last year. This convention fixes the duties,
and also the regulations which shall govern
imports into Japan, from the nations which
are parties to 'that lifstrtutent, and places
goods on a more advantageous footing than
those nations which have no commercial
treaty.
The necessary' documents sent to Mr. Van
Reed, some months since, were supposed to
have miscarried,: but finally arrived safely,
and Gen. Van Valkenburg, the Minister
Resident of the United States at Yeddo, is
lending all the • assistance in his power to ex
pedi e_ the negotiations and assist the Ha
waiian Plenipotentiary.
The treaty was in cue hands of the Tycoon,
and there Was a reasonable prospect that it
would be signed during the month of Sep
tember, and made ready to transmit to His
ilajesty tor ratification immediately.
Orders had been issued by the Japanese
government to have a man-of-war in readi
ness early in October to proceed to Honolu
lu, with officers on board having charge of
the treaty. We may, therefore, shortly en
joy the novelty of seeing a Japanese man-of
ivar at anchor in our uarbor, and assume
treaty relations with the people who have se
cludedthemselves: for centuries from the
civilised world, and commercial relations
with *hum just now is deemed so desirable.
It is possible, that if the various objects of his
mission are terminaterby that time, that D.
C. Waterman, Esq., will return in the vessel.
it will be remembered that he left San Fran
cisco on the 3cl of September, in the steam
ship Great Republic, and must have arrived
at Kanagawa with bis dispatches in the lat
ter days of that month.
A Visit to the Great Glacier of brew
Zealand.
An English paper has an account' of a visit
paid recently by the'chief Officers of the Geo
logical Department to the great glacier on the
west side of Mount Cook. The foot of the
glacier, whica is but thirteen miles from the
sea, is 1,900 feet wide. Neither the glacier
nor,the immense field snow which feeds it
is visible from the rive until within a quarter
of a mile of it, when the stupendous Magi of
, snow and ice, at once breaks upon the
view. Below the glacier a recent moraine
extends for several • hundred yards, consiSting
of dairis of the rock, twenty feet, deep,
underlaid by, ice, and, snow,, through which
considerable streams of water run, which are
rendered visible in round boles, caused by
the giving way of the ice and by cracks in
the surface. On the southern side there has
recently been a great fracture.of the I ice , and
breach of the rock, which had fallen in im
moose masses. The Party 'ascended on the
• northern side,' where the snow or ice formed
rounded hills, undisturbed by any' cracks or
fissures. , The glacial matter is porous, and
piesents tolerable footing; it is of a gray
color, full of small dirt, with occasional
Atones, which had evidently fallen from the
urrounding
The great peculiarity of this glacier is not
only its immense , size, but the conaequent
fact of its descending to so low a level—e4o
feet above the sea level —instead of emit ug, as
is usually the case, at an altitude of so ne
:I,eito or •OM feet„ close to the limit of per
petual snow, among Alpine vegetation.
]fare the green bush extends some, thousands
of feet above the glacier, on the steep' sides
of the range in which the glacier has cut the
deep 'nairow gorge. Nut a single Alpine
plant rewarded the research of the party, and
the teMperature on - the glacier was scarcely
below that on the fiat below..', With some .
ceremony the ,party named it the Victoria
. The height of the peak of Mount
(. ok is foluid to be 12,3 p, feet.

Went' house:and a charitable' lady ministered
to wants. Almost "every day tue old
man would , beg in the streets and with such
success, that he not unfrequentiv retired to his
hovel with well-filled pockets. - About h week
ago the miser disappeared from sight, After
the lapse of several days, the landlord who
had , allowed Rowld to occupy his room, con
cluded to burst open the, door, supposing he
would find the'corpse of the heggar. In one
corner of the rodm,on a little pallet of straw,
lay the dead bodk, the bony fingers clutching
a bank deposit of $7OO, whist scattered about
him upon the floor lay notes, bonds, deeds
and bank-books, and it was evident twit the
wretch had died in a struggle counting his
hoarded wealth. The scene could not have
been more •dramatic it' presented upon the
stage. The ghastly, repulsive features, the,
tattered, hnbit, ot the iniSer:•and :the wealth
for which he bartered his ' Soul lying
around formed a picture which not, even tae
mimic scenes of the stage could rival in in
tense'dramatic force. Large numbers visited
the apartment, to 'Raze noon, the dead miser,
surrounded by his wealth. But, as if in
mockery of the life he led, the rouney left by
the old wretch secured him a decent burial,
and he Went down to' the' grave attired more
respectably than he had ever known when
,alive. Kind hands forgetful of the past, laid
him tenderly away in the tomb, there to sleep
in oblivion until the last great trump shall
sound, and he shall then learn whether the
treasures of earth are counted among the
treasures of heaven.

Tor; woNontart. rocKET,
One cold Uhristrnas Eye Charles Lee was
sitting by the lire, which burned cheerfully
in the grate, and now and, then lighted up Lie
little room, and made its naked walls look
quite cheerful. He looked gloomy and sul
len, and seemed as it' he was angry at every
body. His mother was sitting near him, en
gaged in finishing a piece of sewing work.
Mr. Lee, after a long sickness, had died a
year before: The - little money he had
been able to save while well was
spent during his sickness, and his wife
and children were left penniless. Mrs.
Lee was very industrious and economical,
but she was only able to procure the bare
necessities of life. Charley went out every
day end got all the little jobs he could.
Sometimes he succeeded well, and was quite
a help to bis mother. But that day he did
not get anything. Almost every one he met
had packages full of pretty things. Charley
stopped bolero the window, of a toy shop, and
gazed wistfully at the many amusing things
which had been placed there. Bitter feelings
rose in his mind at the thought:, that'his
mother was not able to buy any of
these nice things ' for him", and that he
had no friends to give him presents.
He went •horne in a very bad • humor.
He was cross to his sister, though he was
generally very fond of her. He knew that
his mother did everything she could to make
him comfortable i yet ho said to her very ;
petulantly that he did not see why he could
not, have nice toys and handsome clothes like
other children., .fils mother tried. to soothe
him, but did not succeed very well. After
a while he'got tit) and went to bed, but C 91114
not sleep. - He' began to• think what hewould
do if he was rich. • He would have alt he
wanted, had would live in grand style.
lay with his eyeeoshut while he was irnagi-•
ning these vain things, lie became so ex
cited that the fanciful pictures seemed to be
real. • He opened his eyes, expecting' to find
himself in hisgrand house, bat he tir,ts still
in his old chamber. Ho saw something,
however, which greatly interested him. A
woman of great beauty stood before him.
He was not a bit frightened. "And so you
want to be rich," she said, in a very swJet
voice. "Oh: yes," he replied, "above all
things; will you give me a whole bagful of
gold?" "No, Charles, I cannot give you arty
money, nor can I tell_ you.. how to get it, but
1 can give you a pocket in which to keep
your money when you get solne."
"Is that. all?" said Cuticles. , "I have a
pocket now. A pocket won't do me any
-
But the pocket I will give you is a very
wonderftil one."
'ls it full. of goldr '
"No. There is not anything in it, and will
not be, unless-you put it in."
•
"Then .I don't want it."
"But you don't know anything about it yet.
If you use itni I tell you, you wilt Soon be
as rich as you need be."
"What islt ?"10-
"Everything you put in it will always re
main there, though you take it out ever so
often."
••What! if I. had a whole handful of gold
in the pocket, and should take it out and
spend it, would it still remain?"
"Yes, and the more you, spent, the more
you would have. And there are a great many
other remarkable things about the packet.
One is that you can only put money In it
which you have obtained by doing rod to
otters. If yon attempt to put, anything Into
it you have gained from selfish motives, the
pocket will disappear. Another is that you
cahnot get anything out of it to spend fool
ishly. If you attempt to do so, it
will become invisible. You shall have
the pocket, but you will not be atile
to see it until you get something to
put into it. And neither you nor any one else
can see it except when you take s imethin,g out
of it. or put something in it. You will find it
on the inside of every coat you wear; and
now "Good Night," and a "Merry Curist-,
ma y and she disappeared. Cho ley ga to
early in the morning and looked fur the
pocket, but of course it was invisible. He
w tut out immediately alter breakfast, telling
his mother and shaer that he would come
back vary Foch], and show theta what he
could do. They did not understand hi n, for
they knew nothing of the wonderful pocket.
He kept thinking of kis pocket, and longing
to get some money to pint into it• that he
might see it. After a while he met a man
going along with a load of coal, and he fol
lowed him. To his great joy, the man who
bought the coal agreed to give him a dime to
put it in.
When be had finished he got his dime, but
he could not find his wonderful pocket,
although he looked for it everywhere. He
looked at the dime he held in his hand, and
thought he would throw it away, he de
spised it so. What was a dime to him, who
expected a handful of gold ? • Ile put it, how
ever, into his old pocket, and went slowly
home. He ate bra dinner with a gloomy
face, and would hardly =ewer a question his
mother asked him. He gave her the dime
with a toss, as though it was good for noth
ing, and after a while went out again. As
be was going around the come , of a street
he found an apple wo : 'in great
distress. Some bad boys I over
thrown her apple stand, and were
trying to pick' up the apples and run otf
with them. He ran, as quickly as possible
and helped the old oman pick up her apples.
Be did not once think about his pocket. He
pitied the poor woman, and only thought of
helping her. When all was done the woman
offered bina an apple; but,as she had lost
some he would not take it, though he was
very anxious for it. . . A kind gentleman who
had seen all called him to him and gave him
a quarter. Even .then he did not think of
his wonderful pocket; but something shining
on the inside of his coat attracted his attt3u
tion. He looked, and 'sure enough, there
was tire wonderful pocket, just big enough
to hold his quarter. He put, it in, and now,
thought he, 1 will be rich and have all I want.
He started at once for a toy store, but when
he was just entering could n ot find his
pocket. It had disappeared, and the quarter
with it. How angry he was, for he wished he
had put the quarter in his old pocket. He
trudged on, and, wonderful to relate, soon
forgot his misfortunes. Ile came upon a gro
cery shoe, and thought' if he only had his
quarter he would take home for his mother,
he did not think of himself, some sugar. The
shining light was again visible, Yes,there was
the pocket. He took out the quarter, and
yes, indeed, there was another there. He
bought coffee, sugar, salt, and ether things,
for his mother and Aster, until ho had spent
three dollars, *and there was still another
quartet; left. Charley had learned a lesson.
Be told his mother all about the 'wonderful
pocket, and you niay' be assured, with her
advice, he spent 'a happy Christmas.
The - book contains many other children's
Christmas stories, and would make a nice
holiday present. Of the above, we h a v e
given but a short cooliposeil ~xtra4.

cheek bones high, and his fine auburn

companions have killed more men than any
other persons who took pare in the late war.
What a pity that young men, so brave and

We learn from a gentleatan who has fre
