How rr WAS Doetu.—A statement of the arrest
ofJostalt Dawson, with various aliases, on sus
`''pleion of forgery, is published on the second
page of to-day's Bri.r.wrix. It seems that he
"was suspected of having some connection with
the presentation of a forged check for $75 at the
National Bank of the Northern Liberties last
week, and Policeman Houck, of the Seventh
Dititriet, has been on his track for several days.
It was ascertained that ho was in the habit of
visiting a saloon at Eleventh street and Girard
' avenue. Yesterday afternoon Hbuck, in citizens
dress, and accompanied by his son, went to the
saloon. The officer remained on the outside and
sent his son into the salooh with a note ad
dressed to "Josiah Dawson." The attendant
said that Dawson would be in shortly, and in a
few minutes he made his appearance. The note
was handed to him and he opened and read it.
It requested him to go to the outside as a man
wanted to see him. He refused, to go.
'Young Houck fthen told his father, who
went in and arrested Dawson. The prisoner re
fused Logo with the officer, and when ho got on
to the pavement he broke away and ran down.Gir-'
and avenue to Tenth street, thence to Poplar
street, and thence into Kurtz street, where le
drew a revolver. As ho was about to use 'Mc
weapon it was seized by young Houck. The
nippers wore then put on the prisoner and he
was taken to the Seventh District Police Station.
On the way a German, who keeps &jewelry store
' on:Poplar street, recognized Dawson as a man
who was in his store a few weeks ago, and stole
two watches. On that charge he was held to
answer by Alderman Toland, and on the charge
of forgery he, was committed for a further hear
ing. Dawson is suspected of having been con
- nected with the various forgeries which
have been committed in this city recently.
Fred Kneedler, alias John Harold. and Winfield
Hoover were arrested for interfering with the
officer when hemade- the arrest in the saloon.
When they reached the station-house a billy was
found on each of the prisoners. Kneedler and
Hoover were taken before Alderman Fitch and
were committed for a further hearing.
New Cuuncu ORGANVIATION.—The colony
that branched off from the Kensington Presby
terian Church (late Rev. Dr. Chandler's),' of
which we made recent mention, is now organized
ss a church. The exercises attendant were full
of interest. The membership, comprising the
overflow from the parent church, numbers two
hundred and twenty. Until ready to erect a
suitable edifice they will worship in the com
modious hall of the Diligent Engine House. As
eve havebefore said, Rev. Mr. Eva has become
their pastor, leaving the old church to call
another. The services attendant upon the
organization were conducted by the pastor and
by Rev. Mr. Allen, of Old Pine Street Presby
terian, Rev. Mr . and Rev. Mr. Adair.
The interesting ceremony of ordaining as dea
cons Messrs. Lukens, Lamon and Carr was a
part of the programme of the occasion. The ,
new church has an admirable choir. Mr. Fair
is the leader, and Mre. Cramp and Mr. Walters
have come to it from the old church. For the
respects of the new enterprise everything is
uset-promising.
Pn.v•s CLUB.—The regular meeting' of the Press
Club of Philadelphia, to-morrow afte*on, will
be an interesting one. An essay will be read by
John F. McDevitt, Esq., and the memorials of
the deceased members, Messrs. W. T. Pied%
George C. Bower, Jr., John M. Grier and Ernest
C. Wallace, prepared by Alt.,,,rs. S. N. Winslow,
W. H. Fisher, Jr., and Casper Bonder, Jr., will
also be read. A general attendance of the active
:Ind contributing members is requested. The

tions to its library, among them-the Legislative
