&MI lIISE NEXT&
Mss. Larmsn.—On Friday evening next Mrs.
Lander will produce _the drama of At ary .Stuart on the
occasion of her benefit. The play is an adaptation.
from a translation from Schiller by Mrs. Frances Anne
Kemble. The Boston Herald, speaking of Mrs. Lan
der's performance, sap ;
"We have in recollection but very few occasions
when we have sat through a live act drama and been
so well entertained as to forget that there was enctv a
• thing as weariness; but such was the ease on the oc
casion referred to, and so it was with the audience,
scarcely one of whom ventured to absent himself until
the curtain fell on the Anal act. Mrs. Lauder's idea
of ellarylittiart' Is, in one judgment, more original,
mere powerful, more - natural and more effective than
her conception of 'Elizabeth.' It Is different entirely,
is better adapted to ber vocal polders , and to rendered
far more smoothly. • Her argument with 'Burielgh,' In
the first act, upon the justice of her imprisonment and
cond nation was rendered with a particular power.
trite iew with 'Elizabeth' in the park at b'other
ingrty affords scope for the finest powers of any actress,
and there are few, very few, who may attempt it with
out incurring the danger of ridicule. With Mrs. Lan
der the plea of 'Mary' for mercy at the feet of her
royal sinter was made particularly quiet and touching;
in the later passage, rtung to , madness by the cruel
words of the 'Queen, she loses her self control, and,
turning upon her captor, taunts her with her illegiti
trine:: and the profanation of the English Mikrofilm we
had a very effectively rendered scene., In the last act,
in the scenes of leave r ntking with her maids prepara
tory to mention, in her conteb, ion aud her farewell
to 'Melville,' she seemed the true wornamwith nothing
. but pure nature Elctuittilw her sfreech, which was calm
but full of quiet resignation,-and fairly matched, even
if she did not excel the justly I.o'] itistori. ller re
buke to `Leicester' was also aptly ne.anageri. Mrs.
Lander chose to assume the royal robes of white and
to wear the crown in these scene-, a choice which can
but bp commended; and her stately and dignified walk
to debm, served but as a elMutual k stroke to bind the
sympathies of the audience which she had enlisted
from the first, and the curtain went down amid the
heartiest applause. Considered as a whole, and as a
purely . artistic performance, we arc nut by any means
aline in judging 'Mary Stuart' in the hands of this
lady a superior personation to that of 'Elizabeth,' and
/we will not withhold the acknowledgment which is
tier due, that of her having added one more to tier list
of successes."
Tea TIIEATHIS.—At the-Academy, of Music b Mrs.
Lander will appear for the last time as "Eliz eth"

UNION PACIFIC RiILIWAD,
Running West from Omaha
ACROSS THE CONTINENT,
Thisbrings the line to the eastern base of the Rocky
mountains, and it is expected that the track will be laid
thirty miles further, to Evans Paw. the highest point on
the road, by Jemmy. The maximum grade from the
foot of the mountains to the summit is but eighty feet to
the mile;while that of many eastern roads Is over ono
hundred. Work in the rock.euttings on the western
'slope will continue through the winter, and there is now
no reason to doubt that the entire grand line to the Pa
cific will he open for business In 1670.
The means provided for the comdruction of this Great
National Work are ample. ,The United States grants its
Six Per Cent. Bonds at the rate of from 516,000 to $4.'5.000
per mile, for which it taken a tosebond lien as security, and
receives payment to a large if not to the full extent of its
claim in services. The'se Bonds are issued as each
twenty-mile ection is finished, and after It has been ex
unlined by. ted States Commialoncrs and pronounced
to be in all rcepects a first-class road,'ltioroughly supplied ,
with depots, repair-shops, stations, andii the necessary
rolling stock and other equipments.
The United States oho makes a donation f 12M) acres
of land to the mile; which will be a source of large re
venue to the Company. Much of this land i the Platte
Valley is among the moat fertile in the vvorl and other
large portions are covered with heavy pine orests and
abound in coal of the best quality.
• The Company is also authorized to issue it. owlf/rtst
Mortgage Bonds to an amount equal to the ue of the
Government and no more, lion. E. D. Morgan and Bon.
Oakes Ames arc Trustees for the Bondholderkand deliver
the Bonds to the Company only as the work , pro
gresses, so that they always represent an actualand pro.
ductive value. _
The authorized capital of the Company is One Hundred
Million Dollars, of which over tire millions have been
paid in upon the work already done.
_ EARNINGS OF THE COMPANY.
MASON & CO..
.907 Chestnut street
At present, the profits of the Company ate derived
only from its local traffic, but this le already much more
than eufficient to pay the interest on all the Bonds the
Company can issue. if not another mile were bat. It is
not doubted that when the road is completed the through
traffic of the only line connecting the Atlantic and Pact.
fie States Dili be Caine'beyond Preeedentogid tlicre'veill
be no competition. It can always be done at profitable
rates.
It will be noticed that the Union Pacific Railroad is, in
fact, a Government Work, built under the otiperdalon of
Government officers, and to a Large extent with Go.
vernment money, and that its bonds are issued under
Government direction. It is believed that no similar
security is so carefully guarded, and certoLolj no other ta
