TIM CitrATION.-It may safely be asserted that there
has never been an Oratorio performance in Philadel
phia eu thoroughly Yucceigtil as that given last night
by the Handel and Haydn 'Society, at Horticultural
Hall. "The Creation" has been sung by almost every
musical kxlety that, lins ever given concerts In 'Phila
delphia, and tbe, nnieie is more familiar to our andl-
Wes than that of any other oratorio. Last evening
there was a combination of all the requisites for a per
fect success. The orchestra was well balanced andju
dicitately posted, and played with unusual spirit and
with excellent expression.. The chorus was large,
briogineout the fall force of the 'Society, and evinced]
a high degree of careful training. The arrangement of
the singing would be improved by increasing the grade,
Ft) as to bring the basses mid tenors a little more for-
ward.
The solos were entrusted to Mme. Parepa-Itosh and
ltlessrs. Geo. Simpson and A. It. Taylor, Madame Pa
repa is nowhere more completely at home than in ora
torio, and her performance last evening was superb.
At her first appearance there was as indication in her
manner of something having gone wrong behind the
scenes, which was contirmed by her cutting "On
Mighty Pens" and "Graceful Consort." But any little
coldness of style thawed out almost with the first
strains of the oratorio, and upon the first encore of
"The marvellous works behold," Parepa gave way to
llaydn'a inspiration and sang with exquisite apprecitt
ation of the music before her, and with all the rare
powers of her beautiful voice, to the great delight of
fate whole audience.
Mr. Simpson was in capital voice, and sang through
out with that careful, conscientious accuracy wnich
has made him one of the first oratorio singers in Ame
rica. Ile was frequently and warmly applauded, and
an encore of "In native worth" was demanded and
given with great beauty of tone and expression.
Mr. Taylor is rapidly gaining ground in oratorio.
His voice has much freshness and power, and con
tinued practice andatudy, without which no singer can
become an artist, will give Mr. Taylor a high reputa
tion among American vocalists. Every one who heard
-lam in oratorio last winter must have observed the im
provement in'atjle and tone last night. Mr. Taylor
gave the audience a specfinen of the compass of his
-mkt:by taking the lower D at the conclusion of the
air, "Rolling in foaming billows," and again in a later
passage, but the note was touched by a careful
and elaborate effort s and did not greatly add to the
general merit of hip really good performance.
The coneert began punctually at eight o'clock, and
concluded before half-past ten, and there was much
less than the usual annoyance from heedless people
clattering out of the Hall during the final chorus. The
audience owe the Society and its hard-working con
ductor, Mr. Carl Sentz, many thanks for one of the
most agreeable entertainmens, in the way of sacred
music, ever given in Philadelphia.
INtusnrissonsr SOCIETY. —The thorough drilling
given the chorus of the Mendels.sohn by its able con
ductor, Mr. Jean Louis, leads us to expect a perfect
performance. The orchestra is under Carl Sentz, and
is too well 'mown for its merits to require any further
praise. Mr. Thunder, the accomplished pianist, con
tributes one of Mendolssohn's tine concertos for
-the
piar,o, with orchestra accompaniment. Mr. Habel
maim sings an entirely new ballad by Abt, "I Greet
Thee." Mr. Harkins has a bass solo, and Mr. Sartori,
Sr., introduces a violin solo by Spohr. The eubscrip.
tioa is going on actively, and a few tickets can be had
from the membere, as they cannot be sold publicly, the
concerts being sustained by subscription only.
Tux Gil/MANIA ORCHESTRA will give their usual
public rehearsal at the Musical Fund Hall to-morrow.

CL/IL SESI-ffi MATINEE, yesterday afternoon, was
an evidence of skill and alallity on the part of the
grand orchestra and appreciation en the part of the
public. The taste for music may be regarded to be of
a high character when such meritorious concerts as
these are so well supported. The Symphony in
Minor was beautifully rendered. Mr. Sartori played
Ids solo for violin with marked ability, but apparently
auffered from nervousness, The overture to Fra.
Piarolo was never better performed. Mr. Sentz has
no performance on Thanksgiving Day.
liroaszs Cormse.r.—The many friends of this
learned theorist and able conductor are active in sell
ing tickets. and a good many have already been dis
posed of, It will be an admirable Concert. Mr. Jarvis
plays a Mendelasolm Concetto in D Minor for piano
and orchestra; Mr. Taylor and Mr. Louis sing two de
lightful songs; Messrs. Thunder and the two Sartoris
give a trio of Gade, and Carl Bentz's grand orchestra
contribute overtures to Magic Plate and Rienzi, and
Meyerbeer's "Flambeau Dance." Tickets are for sale
at all the music stores.

Murder Trial at Albany.
AIMANY, Thursday, Nov. 21.—A singular murder trial
vies concluded here this evening. Judson N. Palmer was
indicted for murder in the second degree in killing Archi
bald Stevens in the town of Copymans„ in October last
year. Palmer sought the hand of Stevens' daughter,
a girl aged 161 • Stevens opposed the match, and
twestened to chastise Palmer if be did not abandon
the suit. An elopement and hasty martiagef.dlowed, and
an hoar after &evens, who was in pursuit, came UP with

SAFETY RAILROAD SWITCH
MAIN TRACK UNBROKEN.
I am now prepared to timbal railroads throughout the
United States with my Patent Railroad Switches. by the
use of which the MAIN TRACK IS NEVER BROKEN.
wad it is impossible for any accident to occur from the
misplacement of switches.
The saving In rails, and the great saving In wear of the
rolling stock, which fa by this means provided with a
level. smooth, and firm track at switches in place of the
Tonal movable rails and the consequent severg blows
caused by the open Joints and battered ends, is ;I:loaner
deserving the especial attention of ail Railroad °embanks.
AS A MATTER OF ECONOMY ALONE this invert.
Mon needs only to bo tried to insure its adoption; but
beyond the economy THE PERFECT . IMMUNITY
FROM ACCIDENT caused by misplaced switches
Is a subject not only of importance in respect to
property saved from destruction. but It concerns THE
LIFE AND LIMB or ALL Tlownraus UPON
RAILROADS.
I refer to the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Com.
pany, and to the New York and Haarlem Railroad Co.
I am now filling orders for various other Railroad Com.
pantos. and I will gladly give any information in =detail
that may be desired.
