WALNITZ—Tha Ws
Mechem 4_659.018t0n.
Tao now on the stage at the Walnut Street mower% is a
pleasant little Comedy traredated teem the FrenCtrby
Mr. W. Clomersal. The original Is having quite a run
at th e French Theatre in New Forkpatd is. ahaply a
comic opera, while , this tnutdatton merely Contains
half a dozen melodies, none of whict ee, Apf remark
able merit. It is, in fact, an ex lltly and
lanlithlble Wi with a strong French AVM. It is
a burlesque of civil and military sriatoersey, end of
court t nenners, fashions and intrigaea ,• and if it bed
no other' merit, its AY Democracy would be likely to
make it popniar with an American audience. The •
j ot is slight, but so ingenious that the most cunning
moo t m otto , conjecture the fate of d e signing ers,
of the eldreste triumph or defeat of th vil
pose.-• bribrimful of humor of the jolliest and most
enjoyable description. There is a gratifying
m angy of those wretched . puns which are
the stock in trade .of Certain facetious play
wrights, but the anther. "has , applied the true
principle of humor, • and produCed excellent re
nut ta by creating enrOising and incongruous situations,
unexpected answers to interrogatories and extraordi
nary exaggerations of common-place things
sur
and
events. The effect of this is that the audience are
prised intolaughter at each turn of th e play, and ere
kept in a state of delightful expectanc the next
Y
of
good thing. There is a' very original and amusing
dance in the first act, which was deservedly encored
last night. The comic dance in the second act is also
very IndiCZOLlti. In the third act one of the scenes is a
little too broad for the American stage, and might very
well be altered to emit the more delicate and polite ears
of our respectable theatre -goers. It would doubtless
be very, palatable threes, bat here it pleases only the
fzelletlll4 who make it more o ff ensive by the roars
of laug her with which they greet it
The play was admirably performed. Mrs. Gomersal
as "the Grand Duchess" dressed well, acted well, and
sang_as sweetly as the snueic would permit. She is
excellent in light comedy and burlesque parts, and
bids fair to become .an eatablished favorite in this city.
air. W. Gonmrssi, however, carried off the honors of
the evening. Bo representation of ."Fritz" was con
ceived in the trueet spirit of humor, a given with.a.
heartinem and warmth that merit th highsst praise.
Mr. Gemersal is treomparative stranger upon the'Phi
ladelphia stage, but he displayed such line powers as a
comedian last night—rejecting the too common thebry
that a comic actor must exaggerate and contort and
grimace—and acted with such natural and easy grace,
that we help to see him oftener hereafter in more dif
ficult parts. Ilia good-natured, rollicking, valiant
"Fritz" is one of the pleasanttat
. eharactere we have
eeen for a long time, and we cordially recommend
every one to become a cq uainted with it while the op
portunity offers. Miss Prentice as "Wends," Mr. 'Bai
ley as "General Brown," Mr. Cha7an as "Brown
Puck," Mr. Faucett ea "Prince Pan " and Mr. Street
as "Aid-de -Camp," were excellent. Each of them gave
clear and distinct Interpretations of these three amus
ing characters. Tne Grand Duchess will appear - again
this evening, and it deserves to have a crowded house.
Rnurthes' Omuta Tzorre.—La Sonnamhula was
performed night at the Acedemy of Mimic to a
moderately well-filled house, Considering the in
clemency of the weather. This evening the favorite
opera of Martha will be presented, with a cast includ
ing Miss RiChitiga, Mrs. Sevin, and Messrs. Castle,
Campbell, Seguin and others.
Tire CilEaTNuT.—Dire. D. P. Bowers will appear this
evening in the historical tragedy of .Mary Stuart. As
this drama will be withdrawn after to-morrow night,
every one should crebrace the opportunity now offered
to see it.
Tux Mom—Miss Rate Reignolds appears_ again to
tient in tue sensational drama of Nobinty's Dattiliter.
Emmet= Smarr OPERA Hovsz.—The attractions
°tiered at this place of amusement this evening are
nnte.nallv great. They include the Trip Around the
World, the Jape and Arabs, the Richmond Raiders,
Willi bungs, dances, burlesques, ate.

will appear in songs, dances, burlesques and general
eeeetancitiee. A pleasant evening is assured to those
who drop in to this establishment.
Ma. SENTz's Firre O.II.OIIEarEAS, MATINS): will be
given in the Horticultural Hall to-morrow afternoon.
The programme, which includes Mozart's famous
Jupiter Symphony, has already been noticed at length
in these columns. Miss Blackburite's
