tTltc Loss of life John Y. I: °rd«
Details are published of the loss of the little
schooner Jciim T. Ford, which left Baltimore for
Paris on the 22d of June last. During the voyage
the John T. Ford spoke several ships, and occa
sionally met with' had weather. On the atter
noon of the sth inet. a sea struck the boat,
and she tprned over, but righted again,
almost immediately. She lost all ker “il, how
ever which was necessary lor the light .it lur
compass, and the crew suffered much from cramp
and the loss of water. The hands then cut up
the boards that secured the ballast the mter
nal fittings in order to burn and obtain & hgkt
for the compass. Heavy gales Iroin the S. \Y. to
E N E were experienced, with a cross soil and
on Mondav, the 12th inst., bore up for Cork,
-when about 10.30 P. M., a terrific sea struck the
boat and turned her over, and the ballast boards
being gone, the ballast shifted, and was thrown
into the water, and the boat kept turmug right
over as the four hands endeavored to get on her,
until the lad, got entangled between the rigging

The men were in this position until noon
the following day, being frequently washed off
by the seas, when a sail was observed bearing
down upon them, and for a time they were in
hopes of being relieved. Thc .

mate Stening then asked Armstrong.aud the sur

with all of them and kissed the likeness of his

and perished. The same evening ,tbe Jad

shortly afterward a heavy sea .wept him otT
and he disappeared. The captain and Armstrong
were washed off, and the captain, as he went
away and sunk, cried: "God help my poor wife
and famdv!” Armstrong succeeded in regaining
the bottom of the boat and remaining on her
until 4A. M. of the 22d, without the slightest
nourishment and after being washed off by the
heavy seas, when the ship Ac ’j ol i?’
- Captain Allevne, oi Liverpool, discerned the
shreds of canvass which were flying from the

CITY NOTICES.
Advancing Civilization
Frequent reference to the amount of our nationa'
debt has accustomed the public mind to such extra
ordinary arrays of figures that the wonderfully rapid
growth of other Interests, which hid, fair to assume
an equal financial importance, has not been realized
So numerous are the grand apartments of civilization
with which we have to do, that it is difficult lor our in
telligence to keep pace with the progress of all,so as to
comprehend their relation to ns.
The system of life insurance, a republican idea of
mutual protection, making eusy and attractive a social
duty not recognized ten years ago, has acquired an
importance to society and commerce, rapidly ap
proaching that of the responsibility of the national
debt. By it special provision has already been made
for the support and happiness of two million persons
of the best American society, ■in form of policies
covering nine hundred million dollars. Though yet
in its infancy, it now distributes Bix million dollars
annually, for the relief or impaired , estates and be
reaved families among us, accomplishing an ines
timable good, in thus suarding dependent ones, with
the fruit of departed fathers’ productive yours.
Thanks to the diligent and earnest men devoted
to tbiß cause, many good institutions of this kind now
possess the confidence and liberal patronuge of the
people they Berve, Among those embraced in the
last report of the New York Insurance Department,
we notice, with both woiider and gratification, the.
strength of position’ already attained by the North
America Life Insurance (vompany of New York, now
less than five years old. It received an average pro-.
mium on all its policies, during the year 1860, of two
hundred and tw o dollars, larger, by neaily fifty per
cent., than has ever been received by any other com
pany in America. We have also learned that this
company has, among its policy-holders, two hundred
of the most prominent merchants, manufacturers and
bankers of New York city (the home of the company),
whose annual premiums average more than one thou
sand dollars each. About two thousand, new policies
have been issued through. Nelson F. Evans, Esq., ut
the Philadelphia Branch, during the past three years.
To gain in so short a time the public confidence
these facts indicate, is a marvelous achievement, pos
sible only with men of great skill andlarge experience,
guided by sound and wise principles. Such men com
