The Secretary of State gave a dinner last week
to Count Wvdenbruck. the retiring Austrian
Minister, at which the French and British Minis

at Galveston. General Frank Wheaton, com
mander of the post of New Orleans, has been at
tacked by the lever.
Tin: corner-stone of anew Catholic Cathedral
was laid vesterday in Boston. Archbishop Mc-
Closkey uelivered an address. The cathedral is
to cost $1,500,000.
As the steamer Deutschland was giving the
usual salute when entering New York narbor, on
Saturday, her gun exploded, killing three of the
passengers.
Sixteen vessels entered the lists iu the great
tea race from China to London. The Taeping
arrived early Saturday morning at London, thus
proving herself the fastest ship of the sixteen.
Kino Wh.uam, of Prussia, has invited Louis
Napoleon and Eugenie to join him and the
Sovereigns of the North Germilu States at some
j*)lace to be designated hereafter.
The Italian Government threatens to com
mence legal proceedings against Garibaldi if he
persists in his preparations for a hostile attack on
Rome.
Mn. Edwin Booth recently [applied for Some
effects belonging to his brother, J. Wilkes Booth,
which were left at a hotel in Washington at the
time of the assassination, but his request has
been refused by the War Department.

present performing the duties of Austrian Minis
ter at Copenhagen, has been appointed Minister
to Washington, vice Count Wydenbruck, re
lieved.
Foil the first time in the history of Virginia,
the colored men of that State will vote to-day,
the occasion being on the question of sub
scribing $2,000,0.00 to the Chesapeake and Ohio
Bnilroad.
Grant has issued an order directing
the District Commanders to co-operate with the
Freedmcn’s Bureau Commissioners in reducing
the numherTof employes and volunteers in ser
vice, and supplying their places from the regular
army.
Numerous suits, testing the constitutionality
of the Confiscation act of Congress, are to come
before the courts in Washington. ' The plaintiffs
were office-holders under the rebel Confederacy,
who seek to recover property sold by the Govern
ment during the rebellion.
The first steamer of the Abyssinian expedition
has left India for Abyssinia, to explore the coast,
take soundings and find suitable places for land
ing. Ten steamers chartered by the government
have already sailed for India, where they will be
used to transport troops, ate., to Abyssinia.

improved, notwithstanding increased expenses,
and certain specified allowances will enable the
Kcgents to increase the endowment to $135,001).
The library of Congress is the largest in tiro coun
try, and needs a separate building.
The mail steamer from Rio Janeiro has ar
rived at Lisbon, and brings intelligence that the
allied Bouth American forces have gained some
recent advantages over the Paraguayans. Just
before the steamer left the news reached Rio that
the allies had captured Corumba and seriously
threatened the strongly fortified position of the
Paraguayans at Ilumaita.
A Flit.nan from the Sublime Porte, granting a
general amnesty to the Greek insurgents in
Candia, has just' been officially promulgated.
The Turkish government has concluded not to
send to Candju,.as was.proposed, a miy,ed com
mission consisting of Ottoman and Greek mein
tars, to inquire into and report upon the griev
ances of the Cretans.
Hon. John A. Kasson has succeeded in com-
pleting arrangements with the Prussian Govern
ment respecting the rates of postage between that
country and the United States. Among the fea
tures of the treaty are the reduction of the rates
of postage fully one-third, when the mails are
sent from thiß country direct to a German port,
and a reduction of one-half when they are car
ried via Great Britain.
—A natural curiosity is reported in Titusville,
in the shape of a pig with a human face. They
are not scarce anywhere.
