To the .Editor of the Chronicle-9m : I thank
% you for the explicitness with which you stated,
in your issue of this morning, that certain affida
vits previously published In your paper. prbfess
ing to expose a conspiracy against the Bureau of
Military Justice, "did not constitute any part of
the records-..vf that office," were not obtained
from it, "and that neither I nor any officer of
said bureau wait, responsible for their publica
tion." Your statement is true in every partieu
... lar. The papers referred to were never on the
files of that bureau, nor had they any connection
whatevrer with its records; nor have they ever
been under my control; nor were they published
with my knowledge or consent, or after any con
. sultations with me, or intimation to me of any
Such purpose.
I may add further that the declaration made,
that a "recommendation" for Executive clemency
in the case of Sanford Conover had come from
the Bureau of Military Justice, is untrue. My en
dorsement on the letter of Mr. Riddle was writ
ten in my owuliouse, and signed by myself as a
citizen, and had no connection whatever with
the Bureau of Military Justice. It was in no
sense a "recommendation," and neither con
tained, nor was intended to contain, any expres
sion of confidence in the general Integrity or
truthfulnesa of Conover. An examination
of its language will show that it was baged
'solely on a principle of recognized public
policy, as applicable to the state of facts pre
sented by Mr. Riddle (important ser
vices rendered by Conover in the trial of Sur
ratt), to which state of facts it was strictly con ,
fined, and that it neither urged nor suggested
any definite Executive action. All averments or
intimations, no matter by Whom made;' or how
ever supported, which seek tO contiec`me in any
degree or in any way with the alleged conspiracy
against the President, are wholly false, as are all
insinuations that in the step I took in
concert
with Mr. Riddle I either aimed or desired to
qualify Conover as a witness for any p_urpose

Since his arrival here, Emperor Napoleon has
on all occasions been treated with marked honor
and consideration by the Austrian Prime Minister,
Baron Von Buest.
It is understood that the sojourn of the French
Emperor and Empress in this city will terminate
on Friday next.

MORAVIAN COLLEGE AT BETHLEHEM, PA.
This institution, tinder the auspices of the Moravian
Church, whose schools have enjoyed a high reputation
for more than three.quarters of. a century, is located at
Bethlehem, Northamptoncounty, Pa., the oldpst and
principal scat of the Moraylans in this country. Having
been reorganized in 1864, with the view to a more extended
education.usefulness, it now gives a thorough collegiate
similar to that afforded by other institution of
the same character.
In connection with it is a Grammar School, in which
students are prepared to enter upon the course of study
pursued at the college, and which, at the same time,offere
an opportunity for such as do not design taking a Collegi
ate course, to lay a Food foundation in those branches
which will ho of service in practical life.
Students are admitted to the College after an examina
tion by the Faculty. No student under fourteenyears of
age is received into the Grammar School. A limited
number of students may hoard in the College building.
The Christmas Term - begins on the eleventh day of Sep
tember next.
