the Lincoln Institution celebrated the Fourth by
an cxv...liion to Torreadale, and a pic-nie in the
woods of Samuel C. Willits, Esq., of Common
Council, who kindly invited the boys to spend
the day, at his place.,The boys were the-recipi
ents of many kind ttentions during the day.
The Fifth and Sixth Streets Railroad and the
Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad conveyed
them. to and from the country free of charge,
while James C. Fisher, Esq., of Torresdalc, gave
theta the use of his delightful bathing ground
and of his handsome residence:.ln view ofthe crowds on the railroad and the
risk to the younger children, the Managers of the
In stitution'%visely deferred until yesterday a grand
excursion of the whole of the inmates of the
Honie to West Chester, in conjunction with the
' children of the Church Home. A delightful pic
nic in Everhart's Grove, West Chester, was ar
ranged for about one hundred and twenty of these
little boys and girls by the good people of thatila tri
ode town. The interest in the orphans of ohrsol
diers does not abate with the lapse of time, as Was
proved by the unbounded liberality which theyy.
experienced at all hands. The Market Street Rail
road and the West Chester Railroad eon veyed the
large party , to and from the scene of their fes
tivity in the handsomest inanner, and without
elmrge,.and their. -,reception by the people of
West Chester was most cordial and generous. A
fine band of music met them at the West Cifester
depot and escorted them to the beautiful grove,
where they eat the day-
A ..A handsonie enter
.. tainment, uding abundant supplies of ice
cream, ea - es and candies, was furnished to the
children, and the day passed otr , without accident
or mishap of any kind. The Lincoln boys
paraded in their neat summer uniforms,.under
the command of their own - 'officers, and,
together with the little girls' from the
- Church Rome, won golden opinions bY
thelr - good -- behavior -- and--pretty—aPPearance_
They are especially indebted for the enjoyment
of their "Fifth of July" to the kindness of Rev.
John Bolton, of the Episcopal Church, Messrs.
May and Poynter, Captain Galloway, and others
who contributed largely to make the excursion a
great success. The Lincoln boys called upon
Mrs. McClennan on their return to the cars and
returned her their thanks, through Captain Jen
ners K. Dexter, for her hospitalities on the occa
sion of the funeral of one of their number, last
winter. . .
FREE Liam—Matt. Higgins and Francis Don
nelly appear to be very fond of lager beer, but
they are not so anxious to pay for it as they are
to drink it. During 'yesterday afternoon they
visited several saloons in the Twentieth Ward.
At each place a 81808 of beer was disposed of,
and the proprietors did not receive the usual five
cent notes. In course of time Higgins and D on
nelly got too much lager aboard and became
noisy. Then they fell into the hands of the po
lice and were locked up. At the hearing before
Alderman Fitch, the bar-tender at one of the
saloons appeared and told of the exploits of the
prisoners. They were then held to bail to answer
the charge of conspiracy to defraud.
THE SICKNESS AT HOXISOROUGII.—We are au
thorised to state that the children and friends of
the Roxborough Baptist Sunday School, who
were taken so seriously ill at the celebration at
Hagey's woods, on the Fourth; are recovering,
and nothing serious is anticipated. The special
cause of the sickness is attributed to the cheese,
of which some partook too freely. The officers
of the school have learned, since the affair oc
curred, that small cheeses are frequently made
by farmers who, not having the means of pro
viding the machinery used on large farms, make
their cheese in copper kettles, and that a certain
amount of copperas will adhere to the rind of the
cheese. It was a small cheese used on the above
occasion, and those who ate too freely suffered.
CIIILD BEATEN NVITII A CLUB.—Peter Bowen
residing in the vicinity of Front and Huntingdon
streets, went home drunk yesterday! He has a
daughter about twelve years of age. Becoming
displeased at some action of the girl, it is alleged
gof aheavy stierof wood - and beat her in au
unmerciful manner. _ The child' was conveyed',
to the Episcopal Hospital, and is now in a
critical condition. Her recovery is considered
very doubtful. Bowen was arrested and taken
before Alderman Benox. He was committed to
prison.
Am/trate .CITY.—At the seaside now the
weather is delightful, and visitors enjoy them
selves hi sailing, fishing and bathing. There is
ample accoriimodation at all the hotels. The
excellent facilities offered by the Railroad Com
pany in, going to and returning from Atlantic
are still continued. Passengers can take eitlier
the 7.30 A. M„.2,0'c10bk..P..M., express (through
In two hours), or the 4.15 P. M. trains„all of
which leave Vine street wharf. Returning, leaving
Atlantic ..at 5.45 A. • M., 7.08 A. M., and 4.40
P. M. The Sunday train leaves every morning
at 7,30 returning, leaves Atlantic at 4.45.
The Can't-geksways should govern themselves
accordingly.
SERIOUS TJn McDermott was
arrested, yesterday, and taken before Alderman
shoemaker, upon the charge of assault and bat
tery on James Kelley. Subsequently, it is al
leged, he went to the house of Kelley twice, and
threatened to kill him. McDermott was again
arrested, and had another hearing. He was held
in $1,500 bail.
