    Dante in Dutch.
• ,
An even tfifilitcrature has occurred in 'Hol
land. k'Dutch man of letters, Mr. Hacke
van Mynden, has published
_a, very exact
translation of Dante's "Di viha Commedia."
The Dutch are •in raptures with the ter.za
rinta versification: -The following specimen
• is front the "Inferno," Canto 3:
Toen vatte blj mijn band, en wel tevteden
Zag liti mij nan, en sehonk mij nionwo krachten.
Zoo daalden we in den afgtond mar beneden, .
'Mar zuchten, trade glen jatanterklachten,
Die duistre sterrelo ze indite doorboorden,.
Zoodat zo mij tot d evo tranen brachten,
, The Pall Malt Gazette, quoting and coin
. hienting upon these passages,.xeinarks:. "This
is the first Dutch work on Dante of which
we can. ascertain the existence. The Swedes
have had since 1567, N. Lovim's complete
version; of the `Comedy' in terzarima, with
somewhat copious notes, &c. The Russians
have only a prose version of the `lnferno'
(with Elaxrnitn's illustrations). The Hunga
rians have Jiitherto- confined their attention to .
. the 'Vita Nuova.' The Spanish possess the
oldest European translation of the 'ln
ferno,' Whin was composed by Archdeacon
Villegas, in stanzas of eight verses, de ark
.9iianor, or containing Raur feet of unequal
lengths., It was Published in 1515, under
the patronage of Queen Johanna, and still
stands alone in the langua,ge. The last ver-.
Sion of the 'Comedy'. in Latin (hexameters)"
was written by the Abbe Della Piazza in
3848; the introduction by the erudite critic,
Carl Witte, comprises several - specimens of
Latin and French versons besides the Spanish
one. Of the other French translations, as..of_
-- ilk -- GCTitittir, - the - number—is- considerable._
Several of the Teutonic languages seem to
ledd themselves with more ease than English
to Dante's metre, inasmuch as they supply a
larger proportion of paroxytone words suited
to the double rhymes.
AN INTERESTING PIIOTOGRAEIL—An interesting
scene transpired on last Friday morning, at the
.National Orphans' Homestead, at Gettysburg.
General Grant and His Excellency. Governor
Geary, on setting out with ire to mak - 4 i
the tour of the battle tela, at the door or
the institution, to be pho raphed in company
with the fatherless little ones there sheltered. The
Generals dismounted, and General Geary, learning
the grouping decided upon, very kindly assisted
in arranging the children. General Grant and
the Governor, with Generals Horace Porter and
B. IV. Crawford, formed the centre grouping,
and on either side stood the boys and girls. All
remained standing until two negatives were
taken. The picture will be a very interesting
one. Among the orphans included in it are
children frotn Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, New_
York, and our own State. It is to be copyrighted
and sold exclusively for the benefit of the soldiers'
orphans at the homestead at Gettysburg.

I I'M. -It is pleasing to. notice the great success which
has attended , Messrs. Peterson & Little's late enter
prise in establishing an eMporiuM, at No. 704 Chestnut
ntreet, exclusively for the sale of Hoop Skirts. When
we see the number of ladies who visit No. 704 Chestnut

long remain an essential part of a lady's dresS, cer

confined mostly to that city and WASHINGTON. -
Within the last six yeitra, these BALTIMORE BASE

They have a large ILLUMINATING SURFACE; which
adds much to their beauty, giving them the advantages of
an OPEN GRATE FIRE.
These HEATERS have a MAGAZINE •or SUPPLY
CHAMBER for coals, which !genres a constant • fire and

They are also a perfect , BASE BURNING HEATER.
