CITY BUULETIK. HOMICIDE IN TEE SECOND WABD. Horn Blowing and shootlnr-A Yoang mao Killed. A young man named Charles Serad was shot and hilled on Second street, below Wharton, ■ about a quarter past seven o’alook yesterday morning. It seems that Serad and five other young men had been out enjoying themselves on Christmas Eye, and the party was on their way home. Each , one had a horn and was using his lungs lustily. On Second street, below Wharton a man was passing up the street. Serad put his horn to the head of this man and blew loudly; In an instant the hom was snatched from his hand; Serad then said, “What are you trying to do Mister.” The man then hurienthe hom at the head of Serad, and it struck him upon the nosei After throwing the hom he went out into the street, as if to go away, but when he reached the middle of the railroad track he turned and drew from the pocket on the left side of his pantaloons, a Sharpe’s pistol and fired two shots at Serad. At the second shot the latter put his hand on his breast, but said nothing. The firing attracted the attention of the companions of Serad, ‘ and Joseph B. Thaokara, one of the party, asked .the 'man what he was shooting at. The only reply was two shots at him, one of which passed through his coat, grazing his breast and lodging under the skin on the shoulder. The pistol havinn been emptied, Mr. Tbaokara mid Wm. Watson, another of the narty, made a rush for the individual who had done the firing. The latter rah over to the east side of thestreet and entered a con fectionery store. His pursuers followed, and. the proprietor endeavored to stop Mr.' Thaokara, but was pushed aside., Thefngi ’ tive went out the back door, jumped a fenoe into an alley, got into Marion street, ran to Wheat street and down that street. There' the pursuit was relinquished, as Mr, Thackara didnotsnppose anybody was hart. -The shooting occurred almost in-front of Boyle's tavern, and Serad walked into the bar-room, where he fell dead. He did not speak a word after receiving the wound. The hall entered his left breast, just below the nipple. The deceased was a single man, twenty six years of age. He was a bricklayer by trade and resided with his father, at No. 207 Marion street. Coroner Baniels will hold an inquest in the case this afternoon. LEOTUBE BY MB. FBEDEBICK DOUGLASS. —The second lecture of the course before the Social, Civil and Statistical Association of the colored people of Pennsylvania will be delivered at National Hall on Tuesday evening the 3d proximo. Lectures are to follow by Major-General O. O. Howard, Major-General B. P. Butler, Hon. Hugh L. Bond, Hon. Wm. D. Kelley, Mrs. F. E. W. Harper, Theo. Tilton, Esq., and Wm. W. Brown, Esq. Quickness of Apprehension.— Why is the suspension of the habeas corpus aet In Ireland beneficial to the Fenians? Because It quickens their apprehension. Philadelphians who are •quick of apprehension of their Interests purchase their ceal from W. W. Alter, 857 North Ninth Btreet, and Sixth and Spring Garden streets. The Only Machine that will Em bboidkb.—“The Grover A Baker Machlre far excels any other machine for dressmaking and general fam ily use. The stitch also Is more beantlfnl and dnratjle than any other stitch that I know of. The machine is so simple!in Its combination of parts and Its practi cal operation, that It Is very difficult to get It ont of order, and any operative can manage It, Itls the only machine which has yet succeeded In embroidery.”— -Testimony of Mrs H. M. P. Alien, 728 Chestnut street, Philadelphia, before the Cemmistioner of Patents. Gave It Up.—“l gave the Wheeler & 'Wilson Machine up because it wonld not perform my work as well as the Grover A Baker. My work Is la dles' cloaks. The Grover A Baker Machine does the very finest and thewery coarsest with the same plate nnd the same needle, and I conld not do that with the other machine, I think the stitch In the Graver A Baker Machlnels the most elastic. I like it better than any other machine I know ot."—Testimony of Mrs. M A. McLaughlin, 36 Leuis street before the Commissioner of Patents. A Decided Preference.—" I have had several years’ experience with a Grover & Baker Machine, which has given me greatsatls£acslon. Its chlei merit Is that It makes a strong elastic stitch; It Is very easily kept in order, and worked without much fatigue, which I think is a very great recommenda tion. lam not'very familiar with any other machine except a Wheeler & Wilson, which I have had. i think the Grover & Baker Machine is more easily managed, and less liable to get out of order. I prefer the Grover & Baker, decided]y.”-Ikitimmj, of Mrs. Mr. li'ottj, of Sew York, before the Commissioner of Matentt. Q9ES Always Ready.— “ The Grover & Baker Machine is always ready When. I want to do anything and is in this respect superior to Wheeler & Wilson’s' It is also preferable to any other machine for tucking and sewing on bias seams, on account ot the esse with which it is learned, and using the threads from ordi nary spools.”—Testimony of Mrs. A. A. Covet, 92 Jane street. Sew York, before the Commissioner of Matentt. An Inventor’s Opinion.— “l consider the Grover & Baker hewing Machine the best machine for general use. It is simple, and on that account it commends itself to families particularly. The seam made by this machine Is more durable than the Shut tle Stitch Machine on account of Its elasticity I make It a point to recommend the Grover & Baker Machine when my advice Is requested, which Is often the case, as many people are acquainted with the fact that I Invented and patented sewing machine im provements myself."—Testimony or Ur.
