BREAKERS AHEAD.
The recent decision of the Supreme
Court on the military trials in Indiana,
is likely to introduce another of those
disturbing-elements into the body-politic
that will keep alive agitation and indefi
nitely prolong the process of national
reconstruction. With the Court itself
divided as nearly as equally as it can be
upon the abstract question of law, the
public mind will receive no convincing
impression from a decision whieh is con
tradicted by the Chief Justice and three
of his learned associates. There is a
dee§-seated feeling in the minds of the
loyal people of this land opposed to fore
going any single point established dur
ing the war, and they look with just
jealousy upon any movement by any
branch of the Government that is
thought to weaken the position gained
by our victorious arms. Whatever be
the technical decision of the law upon
questions which were never contem
plated when the law was made, the will
of the people in this country is a well
defined power, which, sooner or later,
will control the actions of the
Government, whether they be the
decisions of . the Judiciary, the
patronage of the Executive, or the
acts of the Legislature. There can be
no really retrograde step in the matter
of this rebellion. By bayonet and bul
let, or else by the peaceful but potent
ballot, the onward march of this free
people will assuredly continue. And
they will carry all their treasures with
them. As the Israelites went out of
Egypt, so the American people are de
termined togo up from theirold bondage
to their new and real freedom. “We
will go with our young and with our
old; with our sons and with our daugh
ters; with our flocks and with our herds
will we go. * * *. there shall not an
hoof be left behind.” Our modern
Fharoah, who §o strangely miscalled
himself by the name of Moses, would
gladly see the people shorn of much
that they have won for themselves on
the field of battle and at the ballot
box, but every such effort will certainly
foil. ...... - *
The haste with which Mr. Johnson
began the application of this; startling
decision of the Supreme Court,by releas
ing a rebel from, his trial for the murder
of a negro in Bichmond contrasts strik
ingly, with his utter neglect of the re-

fort and aid to traitors: and rebels, and
how un willing he is to protect theigncb.

rebel Judge Magnifier, of four.human
beings in Maryland into slavery is an
other warning to the people. The inti
mation that the Supreme Court is about
to declare the testroath unconstitutional
is still another signal of “Break
ers ahead!” But although the
insidious influences of secession may
have worked themselves even into the
hallowed precincts of the Supreme Court
and poisoned the minds and dimmed
the eyes of a majority of its members,
there is a supremacy in the great funda
mental truths upon which the American
people fought out the late war which
must inevitably triumph in the end.
And that end is probably near at hand.
Mayor McMichael is quietly, but en
ergetically at work in reforming various
municipal abuses, and the peace-and
order-loving portion of the community
are taking note of it, to his credit. On
Christmas Eve he essayed the Herculean
task of preserving order and good be
haviour in Eighth Street, and the labors
of the police were crowned with a very
fair degree of success. For many years
that thoroughfare hasbeen made the held
for a sort of carnival scene, which ha 3
grown from one of innocent hilarity and
fun into one of rough and unmixed row
dyism, until it has become dangerous for
a decent woman or even for a quietly
disposed man to venture into Eighth
street,after dark on Christmas Eve. Be
sides the extended breach of the peace
involved in. this unseemly conduct, the
shop-keepers along that popular street
are almost cut ofi from their customers,
at their busiest season, and the seekers
after Chnstmasgiftsare driven elsewhere
to make their purchases. Mr. McMichael
began a good work on Monday evening,
which will result, in another year, when
the orders of His Honor will be more
universally understood both by the po
lice and the populace, in restoring quiet
and good order to that most disorderly
neighborhood.
But if the hustling and crowding and
rushing of the mob on Eighth street is
an evil to be abated, there is another
Christmas usage that is, by reason of the
greaterextent of its far great
er nuisance. The Tin Horn plague,
which breaks out in Philadelphia on
Christmas Eve, and rages all through
the night and far into the morning,slay
ing its thousands of pleasant dreams; de
stroying its tens of thousands of peaceful
tempers; startling the invalid from her
unquiet, fitful sleep; in a word, “making
night hideous”—this is a nuisance in
deed. This is, literally, a crying evil,
which calls for the interference of our
worthy Chief Magisgrate. It is all very
well to say that “boys will be boys!”
But it may boldly be asserted that no
boy or half-grown man—and to the
shame of the age be it confessed that the
majority of these wretched horn-blowers
call themselves “youngmen”—possessed
of a brain. of ...greater capacity
than that of a jackass, can be found ex
tracting pleasure from a poor imitation
of the bray of that much-abused animal.
The custom has neither sense nor music
in it. It is simply a piece of brainless
silliness without a shadow of excuse
about it of any kind.
The North American Indians believe
that an eclipse is an attempt of a
great fish to swallow the moon, and they
turn out with some such instruments as
these horrible horns and perform a sort
of Chorus Infernale to frighten the
monster away. But what connection
these stupid, babyish, unmeaning bray
ing tin horns can possibly have with the
grand and glorious events of the first
Christmas Eve, ingenuity fails to ex
plain. There is scarcely a quiet street
of Philadelphia that has not its mid
night repose broken up by this worse
than silly practice. It is a practice that
would not be tolerated in any city of
Europe for an hour. It has no warrant
even in the ancient traditions
of Christmas. It is a modern barbarism.
In a word, it is a nuisance of the worst
kind, and should be abated. The fusil
fades of New Year’s Eve are not to be
compared to this Tin Horn plague. A
street musician, a creaking wheelbarrow,
a crying baby, a scolding wife,—any or
all of the horrible sounds that destroy
equanimity and murder sleep, are sweet
est music compared with the senseless;
monotonous bray of the tin horns of
Christmas Eve. May it please your
Honor! put them down, next year!
Now that at least one man ha 3 been
killed for blowing a tin-horn, (and let
the Sheriff see to it that the writer of
this article is not placed on the jury
that tries that case,) surely our Christ
mas nuisance is a fair case for the police-

Ingof the Florence hewing Machine deserves mor
than a passing notice. This machine combines all the
excellencies but none of the defects of other Sewing
Machines with which we are acquainted. Tne great
variety ol w ork that can be accomplished by its four
dlflerentstltches, the reversible feed motion, the self
adjusting tension, the rapidity and quality of the work
done by It, clearly demands of ns the award of the
Society’s highest premium—lts silver medal."
At Ihe NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE FAIR, held at
Nashua, Sept. 1666, tbe “FLORENCE” was awarded
the highest premium given to Bewing Machines.
At the MECHANICS’ ASSOCIATION FAIR, held
In Boston. September, 1865, the “Florence” received a
Silver Medal ana Diploma, together with all other
Sewing Machines on exhibition.
