The Navy Department das received a
communication from Bear Admiral J. A.
Dahlgren, dated December .12, announcing
that he had on that day relieved Rear Ad
miral Pearson, in command of the South
Pacific equadroD: At that time there was
no other United States ship there but the
storeship Jamestown.
Commander E. Simpson, of the steamer
Mohichan, from Carav Brazil, under date of
Nov. 7tb, reports to the Navy Department
that, on tne afternoon of the 30th of Septem
ber, when off the Lencores Grandes, one
hundred miles east of Marahbam, the back
of a large fish was seen about a cable’s
length from the ship, and inclined diago

wards the engines suddenly stopped, steam
was shut off and a hurried examination
made, but no cause could be discovered for
the remarkable result. Steam was again
turned on, but the engines could not be
forced ahead. At this time several pools of
-blood were seen to rise to the surface of the
water under the stern, and after a few mo

fish or whale had been caught between the
propeller and its frame. : The shook ou tbe
engines was very great.
Train China.
San Francisco, Dec. 22.—ThebsirkParsee,
from Hong-Kong, arrived yesterday with
advices of October sth. The ship China, from
Shanghai for Batavia, arrived at Hong-
Kong, October 4, with the chief mate and
seventeen of the crew of the ship Westmin
ster, bound to London, which they reported
ashore at Prata Shoal. The-captain took a
boat and made the east end of the island for
assistance, leaving the mate in charge of the
-ahip, which was soon after boarded by Chi
nese, who ordered all on board to leave.
The mate and crew left the ship in two
boats. The captain and six men returned to
the vessel, and are supposed to have been
murdered by . the pirates, as the mate after
wards hailed the ship and was told the cap
tain had left some time before. The water
boats were soon'after picked up by the ship
China. Commodore Jones, hearing the par
ticulars reported, sent a gunboat to the as
sistance of the vessel. The Westminster had
•a large cargo from Calcutta.
There is a reporter the shipwreck of 40,0D0
bales of cotton for the Hong Kong markets.
The case of the British steamer Prince
Albert, seized and confiscated by the Chi
nese authorities at Hong-Kong, is to be re
opened by order of the British minister resi
dent at Pekin. -
Hong-Kong advices of October 6 announce
the capture of the American brigantine Cuba
by Chinese pirates, near Pedro Branca. The
captain was deliberately shot, and the vessel
pillaged, set on fife, and abandoned.
Through the exertions of the survivors the
ifire was extinguished,and thevesael brought
safely into port.

San Francisco, Dec. 22.—The British
ship Mary Ann, for Liverpool, with 23,293
sacks of wheat, cleared yesterday from Port

SAn Francisco, Dec. 21.—During the past
twenty hours 7 76-100 inches of rain have
fallen, double the quantity recorded on any

passing over a small bridge near San Mateo,
It broke through, throwing the tender and

and injuring several others.
The steamer Moses Taylor, from San J nan

Later— P. M.—The storm continues, and
-accounts of the destruction of property by
floods and wind come in from every direc

the overflow of streams.
Tne Fenian Trials.
The trial of McDonald was continued at
Sweetsburg, 0. E,, on Monday, on a charge
of robbery. Testimony was given by
Magloire, Hebert and Mrs. Whittemore, to
establish the robbery of a pocket-book con
taining thirty to fifty cents. Reardon, who
was with the Fenian party, said he had
never seen either of the witnesses.
The judge charged the jury and they re
tired.
The Grand Jury indicted George Craw
ford, an American, on a charge of plun
dering at Felightsburg. He pleaded not
guilty.
Cornelius Owens was next placed on trial
for levying war.
The testimony went to prove that be had
been wounded, but conld not establish
his complicity, and he was therefore dis
- charged.
Charles McGowan, shoe-black, was also
-discharged.
The jury st 7.30 P. M. were unable to
-agree on McDonald’s case, and so were
locked up over Christmas.
Thejgovernment physician attempted to
-day to extract bullets from the neck of the
prisoner Martin, but failed.
The court then adjourned until Wed
nesday.
Hatters in Hew Orleans.
A New Orleans despatch of the 24th says :
The Hon. B. M. Boyer, a member of the
Congressional Investigating Committee, ar
rived here last evening.
The Hon. D. D. Campbell arrived here last
-evening.
Lieutenant General Sherman had an in
terview with Governor Wells to-day.
The joint, committee of the Common
Council waited on the Congressional com
mittee for the purpose of tendering rooms,
■etc., on the part of the city, agreeably to the
special resolutions of the City Council. The
offer'was declined.
Lieutenant General Sherman leaves to
night for St. Louis. Commodore Olden left
on the flag-steamer ;to join the Susque
hanna. Rooms have been engaged at the
■St. Louis Hotel for the; accommodation ,of
the Congressional excursion party, which is
expected toarrive on the 27th. '
The United States steamers Winooski,
froip Vera Cruz, arrived, yesterday,. The
officers of the Susquehanna say that' the
statement of civilities of the French officers
at Vera Cruz are entirely untrue. ' The ship
was forbidden to approach nearer the city
than the Verde island, and the only'inter
course with the French , was . a message de
livered to Mr. Campbell'by the officers of
the French navy, that if chains or anchors
were wanted they would be happy to sup
ply them.
Mr. Campbell replied that he stood in no
particular need of such articles, and he im-;
agined that United States ships of war were
generally well supplied with them. Mr.
Campbell declares bis pnrposes and expec
tation" to find Juarez within forty days.
The Stale Department has not as yet of
ficially received the particulars of Lieute
nant-General Sherman’s and Minister
-Campbell’s recent mission to Yera Cruz.
