Terrible Accident at Zanesville, Obio.

Cincinnati, Dec. 4.—A terrible accident
occurred at Zanesville, Ohio, about 9 o’clock
this morning. The large iron bridge across
the Muskingum, at that place, broke down,
carrying with it the morning passenger train
bound east. The particulars have not yet
been received, but it is supposed a large
number of lives have been lost.
Disasters at Sea.

New Yoke, Dec. 4.—The steamship Scot
land heretofore reported ashore on the
Middle Ground has snnk. •
The brig Wilhelmine is ashore on the
Romer Shoals. She is rolling heavily with
no one on board or near her.

notorious Kentucky guerilla, captured by
the military, was turned over to the civil
authorities to-day.
General Von Schorder, of Gen. Thomas’s
staff, leaves for the South to-night on a mis
sion not public.
Seventy-five bales of cotton were sold at
auctibn to-day. The receipts are steadily
increasing, and large quantities of cotfcrita in
"White river are awaiting shipment. The
crop in that section of Arkansas is the*
largest ever grown. Business is very dull.

was commlted this morning, by Alderman Fitch, to
answer the charge or having entered the house of
Isalßh Bird, No. 1263 Nagle street, Twentieth Ward,by
prying open a back window, yesterday afternoon,and
stealing therefrom a black sack coat and a finger
ring. Pawntickets calling for the coat and ring were
round on his person when hewaa arrested.
Nabbow Escape.— A little child while
. playing with matches yesterday, at a house. No. 712
St. Mary street, set ore to a bed. The fiatnes commu
nicated to other articles in the room, but the smoke
was observed by officer Blizzard,who extinguished the
fire and rescued the child.

The Flour market presents no new feature. There
Is no shipping demand and only 4@roo barrels were

sage was very favorably received herefThe
city press commend the spirit is which it is
written and recommend the people of the
South to appreciate the efforts of the Presi
dent in their behalf, considering the strong
opposition he has to enoounter.:
There was a violent storm of wind and
rain here early this morning. The skeleton
walls of several burnt buildings were blown
down, but no considerable damage was
done.

Scotia, from Portland, has arrived here on
her way for Liverpool.

Washington, Dec. 4.— The French Min-;
ister takes exception to the language of the
President, in his Message, in Speaking of
the conduct of the Emperor Napoleon, ini
not complying with the agreement in re
gard to the withdrawal of the French troops
from Mexico, and he is preparing a sharp
letter to Secretary Seward on the' subject
The caucus to-day decided to
depose from the leading committees of the
Senate, Senators Doolittle, Dixon and
Cowan. They have another meeting to
morrow, when the question of m«irw
other changes will be discussed.
There are many Senators who favor the
election of a new President of the Senate.
If they agree to it, Mr. Wade will be the man!
Secretary McCulloch has already com
menced reducing the quantity of gold in the;
treasury in anticipation of the action of
Congress, It will be done gradually.
The Accident at Zanesville, Ohio.
SECOND DESPATCH.
Ohio, Dec, 4.— The accident
Zanesville, Ohio, is not as bad as at first
reported. One span of the bridge,'only, was
broken down. Two engines, two express
oars, one baggage and one passenger car
were precipitated into the river. The num
ber. of persona injured and killed not
knownyet.

Cincinnati, Dec. 4.—One span of the
bridge of the Central Ohio Railroad, over
the Muskingum river, at Zanesville, Ohio,
gave way about 9 o’clock this morning, as
tie Eastern bound express was crossing,
precipitating the engine, tender, two
Adams’s express and one baggage, and one
passenger car a distance of sixty fejet on to
the rocks at the bottom of the river.
It is not known yet that any person was
billed, but many are seriously, and some*
perhaps, fatai-y wounded. At the time of
the accident two empty engines were oross-i
irg oh the down track, one of which escaped
with the loss of its tender. This train con
tained passengers from St, Louis and Cin
cinnati, destined for Baltimore and Wash
ington, and was the regular connection of
the Baltimore and Ohio road by the wav of
Belair. '
The body of Caldwell, of Sheridan’s
staff, lately deceased.at New Orleans,was on
the train,but was recovered without damage. :
It is considered miraculous that' no person
was killed outright, hud under the latest
news, alarm is subsiding. ,

Senate,— Mr. 1 Sumner gave notice of his
intention to introduce to-morrow a series of
resolutions declaring the entire control of
Congress over the subject of reconstruction,
and the right toexclude the lately rebellions
States from representation in Congress and
from voting on amendments.
A motion to take up Mr. Chandler’s reso
lution offered yesterday, calling for infor
mation about Mexican affairs, was lost.
Mr. Chandler called np the bill passed by
the House yesterday, repealing the 13th
section of an act of 1562, giving amnestv
powers to the President, J
Mr. Chandler’s motion was lost, and the
Senate then adjourned.
